Essays, Tips and Advice
- Editing/Beta readers: As mentioned in the Formatting Guidelines section, I highly recommend the use of a beta reader, or even better, several. Please check out the Beta readers forum in our Bulletin Board for volunteers who will be happy to beta read your fic and help you with typos, spelling and grammar... but as you do, please keep in mind the recommendations of Loch Ness, a long-time multi-fandom fic writer in her essay about what beta readers are and are not: 'Beat Me, Whip Me, Beta My Story' (Or, "I Don't Know What A Beta Reader Is, But I Want One!").
- Further essays and things to think about by Loch Ness:
- Kirby Crow's rant about 'The Slash Not Written For A Gay Audience' should definitely be checked out and hits several cogent points.
- From the alt.startrek.creative FAQs, check out
- Responding to feedback: you want to check 'A Guide for the Bashful Fanficcer' by nindulgence for a concise and hilarious list of options! And for sending feedback, check out 'Maeg's guide to leaving feedback' which contains some simple recommendations to improve your feedback writing skills.
- On writing: let's start quickly with 'Some Things No One Ever Told Me' by Bonnejeanne.
- Not to be outdone, hyuy and Lilias show you how not to write a yaoi lemon in 'The Worst Lemon Ever' (just a very short fragment, but more than enough to the purpose, really...)
- And there is also Reishin's tongue in cheek advice: 'How to write good 1x2 fanfiction', which probably should not be read while drinking or eating.
- Then check out these practical and useful writing tips and down-to-earth advice from the 'Master and Apprentice' archive, for any author who feels seriously about this and trust me, readers can tell if you do not re-read yourself and exercise masterly self-control over your grammar, spelling and punctuation.
- You can find a lot of help about this subject online, and a good reference is Macedon's essay on The Craft Of Writing.
- For the truly confused:
- Why yaoi? I often get asked by newcomers to the yaoi genre why the Gundam Wing characters are portrayed as gay in a lot of the fanfics archived here. My immediate answer is that GW Addiction is not for the education of non-yaoi fans, so go away, shoo! But here is my standard answer for anyone who is still interested after this rude rebuttal...
- Thoughts about yaoi What do so many women and girls enjoy about yaoi? Here are the thoughts of Joyce K. Wakabayashi, one of the most respected and popular authors in GW fandom, whose explanation seems dead-on to me.
- What is a hentai and how did we get to be that way? the result of an on-line discussion, this practical definition of hentainess, yaoi and who exactly are fanfic writers is posted here for your edification with the author's kind permission (thanks, jay!)
- The curse of Gundam Wing fan-fiction addiction naturally enough, the innocent, but concerned GW fan will wish to test the extent of his or her own problem with the handy test thoughtfully provided herein by D.C. Logan -who is also a sufferer of this sad affliction- affliction which strikes young and old indiscriminately across international boundaries, often as a result of national television showing of the Gundam Wing anime. Only one of the many worries of life in modern society...
- Pause for thought: Why the web is a big city with a difference. Despite its appeal of anonymity, the internet could bring individuals together rather than atomising them, suggests Michael Prowse's article.

Who & What
Behind the scenes of Gundam Wing Addiction: Who and what makes this archive work, and no, it's not automated (yet)... |
Q: Hold it! I do not know anything at all about Japan and therefore feel rather silly, not to mention conspicuous in this Japanese-savvy fandom, how can I rectify this?
A: Read 'Dave Barry does Japan', a book by -weirdly enough- Dave Barry. It may not teach you all you need to know about Japanese culture, but after spending a few hours rolling on the floor laughing, you'll feel a lot better! J
