Heero's Journal Entry
This time I'm not going to erase these words when I have finished writing them.
I don't remember when I first started writing these journal entries. I know I did it during my training with Dr. J, which is where I got the habit of writing them in the computer, and then blanking the screen after I'd finished, without ever even saving them to disk. I think, I almost remember, writing something on scraps of paper when I was with Odin, and then tearing the scraps up or burning them. At any rate, the habit is an old one.
But today I am saving this, because it is time to stop hiding. And because I have someone in my life I might offer my thoughts to, and someone else I might leave them to.
Today, T'ien went through an entire 24 hours without any kind of degenerative attack. It's not a fluke. He is getting better.
The answer was quite simple after all. It wasn't Quatre's Dr. Ashworn who found it, but rather one of the scientists who created the problem in the first place.
Her name is Melanie Drake, and she was the one who I gave orders to when we took the satellite, who obeyed. She is not the smartest or most advanced of the group, but she was the one who, I suppose, developed a conscience. She said that she couldn't stop thinking about T'ien. And even though her idea was so simple that it seemed ridiculous that no one had considered it, it was as much a matter of timing as anything.
The Preventers relayed her request to talk to me, and I went to hear her, though it came at a time when we were counting T'ien's good hours and it was difficult to go. I did not dare think about hope, only that it was one more thing I had to do to make sure I had not let any avenue go unexplored.
She pointed out a very simple fact. That the clones, including T'ien, had all been created using Kuang's DNA. When the attempt was made to engineer enhancements, a number of imbalances had cropped up, forcing them to compensate. Melissa's suggestion was that if the imbalances that had caused T'ien's accelerated internal aging had been caused by imperfections in Kuang's DNA, it might be correctible by fusing the damaged DNA with healthy DNA from a compatible donor. Apart from Kuang they had never had such a donor.
Even I understood what she was talking about by the time she reached this point in the explanation.
Wufei of course agreed immediately. In a remarkably short time, the virus that would bring about the fusion of Wufei's healthy DNA with T'ien's was developed. Everything was explained to T'ien, and he understood it better and more quickly than I did.
It has been as close to a miracle as I ever expect to see with my own eyes.
I believe that he will continue to get stronger. And I believe that he will be able to have what we so blithely refer to as a 'normal life'.
If his progress continues at the rate the doctors project, I may be able to take Duo, and our adopted son, on the vacation I promised my lover on that day which now seems so very long ago.
