NOTES: What is being posted here was written by myself and Laekin together, just as everything else in the Companions of Fate series. The plot is hers, with a few small contributions by moi; she writes for Quatre, Trowa, Duo and T'ien. My contributions are confined to Wufei and Heero and some brainstorming. The writing sessions for this were between October 19 and December 6, 2000.
Quatre set the last paper down, for the fourth time. He'd read through all the information T'ien and Heero had brought back with them, four times in the past two days. Leaning back in his desk chair, he rotated it lazily about so he could stare out the window. It was quiet in the hotel room. Trowa had gone with Wufei to the facility where the Preventers were housing the clones at the moment.
Things were going well on that front. Along with the original five that Wufei had named, another ten separate personalities had emerged already and there was positive indication that another fifteen could be close. They still looked to Wufei for guidance and direction but they also would defend points of view when Wufei would raise questions that required conflicting judgments.
Zechs had brought up the idea of taking the youngsters down to Earth. His reasoning had stemmed from the idea that they had been born and designed in space, for use in space, and that their sense of "Earth" was a little less cut and dried. Quatre had been chewing on that idea and making discreet inquiries here and there into an idea he had. He's spoken of it briefly with Trowa, getting his opinion. The green-eyed boy had looked thoughtful and with a mild warning to the Arabian not to do anything rash, or too quickly, had given his approval.
With the exception of the papers sitting on his desk, Sally Po had released the rest of the work into the hands of Dr. Ashworn, who was working closely with Heero on T'ien's condition. It hadn't taken much more than a pair of large dark, mischievous eyes to coax the older doctor back up into space.
Quatre rested his chin on his upturned palm and looked at the reflection of the clock in the window. It was getting late, he knew that Trowa needed to stop by the Circus briefly to talk to Catherine but he realized he didn't know if Wufei was going to be staying at the facility late, going with Trowa, or coming back to the Hotel. Quatre shook himself out of his many thoughts and turned all the way around. He'd give them both another half hour, then break out the communicator to catch up with them. Until then.... he reached for the top sheet, intending to read it all through one more time.
The door opened quietly and Wufei came in, closing it behind him. He walked over and gave Quatre a kiss on the forehead, then made himself comfortable on the wide couch. "Trowa will be in a bit later. One of the female lions was in the process of having her cubs when we got there."
Wufei leaned back and closed his eyes, reaching up to rub them briefly before settling.
Quatre looked up with a bright smile. "Hello, koi. Oh! Is it Basheba? I know the circus was trying to get her to breed since the war."
Quatre set aside the one set of papers and pulled a neatly put together folder out of a box on his desk, resting his hands on it lightly.
Wufei shrugged slightly. He didn't know the lions' names but that sounded familiar. "I'm sure you will hear all about it from Trowa," he said with an undercurrent of humor. The quiet boy did become talkative on rare occasions when it concerned the lions and few other subjects.
Quatre nodded slightly, pushing up out of the chair. "We'll have pictures all over the place before too long. It will be like living with a proud grandparent."
Picking up the folder, Quatre walked over to the couch looking his lover over from head to toe. "You look tired, Wufei," he said softly, reaching over to stroke a stray wisp of black hair off Wufei's forehead.
Wufei wrinkled his nose slightly, disliking to admit anything that could be considered weakness, even to this day.
Quatre smiled gently to himself. Turning around, he sat down on the couch beside Wufei. "If you have a moment, I have some papers for you to look over?"
Wufei took a deep breath and sat up, taking the opportunity to casually drape an arm around the Arabian. "Of course."
Quatre snuggled up a little closer, resting his head against Wufei's shoulder. The soft scents of cologne and wool clung to his hair and body though he'd taken off the suit jacket a couple hours ago. Resting the folder on his lap, he flipped it open. Sheets of paper were neatly laid out, reflecting both words and numbers.
"You can look over it in detail if you wish but this is basically everything your cousin willed over to you. You told me to liquidate the whole of it. This is a layout of everything, its value and interested purchasers. Nothing has been done yet, it will need your signature to put it into motion."
Wufei spent a few moments looking at the information. Then he turned and gave Quatre a tender kiss. "Thank you, koi," he said quietly. He allowed the barest hint of a sigh to escape. "When it's done, I want to set up a trust. Part to go to T'ien's medical expenses. The rest... for *them*."
Quatre sat up a little, then he took the folder back over to his lap. He continued to rest against Wufei but he reached up and pulled a pencil out of his shirt pocket. Tucking his legs up under him, he flipped through some of the pages, making small notations as he went. He then flipped to the back of the packet and made a few more notations. Finally he circled two figures.
"Wufei... I have a proposal for you... if you might be interested?"
Wufei slanted a look down at his blond lover. "That sounds interesting," he said, with a distinctly wolfish expression and the hint of a smile.
Quatre blushed, looking down along the length of the couch and then back up with a twinkle in his eyes. "Mmm." He then cleared his throat and noticeable shifted his seat a bit to get more comfortable in fitted trousers. "Before we get distracted... deliciously so... see how this looks to you. I've done a little poking around and I've found a 300 acre tract of wilderness in East Asia that if we agree to maintain it as a nature reserve can be purchased. If you put, this amount... " Quatre motioned to one of the circled figures, "into the trust for T'ien... then this amount..." he motioned to the other figure, "would still cover close to 3/4s of the payment." Quatre paused, looking up to see what possible questions Wufei might have, chewing his lower lip nervously.
Wufei regarded Quatre for a few moments, thinking, and trying to follow the Arabian's thought processes. He frowned slightly but it was more in concentration than anything.
"You're thinking... of what?" he said, finally deciding to just ask.
Quatre squirmed, knowing he was lurking into dangerous territory here but he took a breath and began. "Trowa... Trowa would be happy, taking care of the animals. Big cats like tigers and the like. Also, it looks like it would be a calm and peaceful place to... well for a scholar to reside and teach as well. It could be a restful place for children to learn."
Wufei watched Quatre and a slow smile curved his lips. "And what of a rich business man?" he said softly. "Where would he fit in this lovely picture?"
Quatre licked his lips. "Well... there would no doubt, be a lot of administrative duties to see to. People to coordinate and the like so that the scholar and the animal caretaker only had to concentrate on their pursuits." Quatre grinned a little. "Plenty of bean-counting to keep a well trained businessman active and useful."
Wufei slid his arms around Quatre and pulled the blond against his body firmly. He bent and kissed Quatre deeply, slowly, raising his head only when they were both breathing quite deeply. "Is this really something you would want?" he asked softly.
Quatre tried to pull his scattered wits back into some sort of order as he wriggled against Wufei's warm body, trying to straddle the other boy's legs. He pushed the folder out of the way and gained his perch, sitting back on Wufei's thighs and brushing his fingers lightly through neatly bound hair.
"I might have to spend the odd day up here in space but Marilyn is one of those competent people you spoke of, she can take over the day to day and my sister Gisella... well she loves social functions, lives for them actually. I've been talking to her some... so... yes. It really is something that I would want," Quatre finished in a soft voice, his eyes caught in his lover's onyx gaze.
Wufei kissed Quatre gently on each eyelid. "You always find a way, don't you?" he said with great warmth.
Quatre bowed his head slightly, then peeked up at Wufei. "The question, love is, is this something you would want?"
Wufei smiled. "It is something I would want. It is something I would be very honored to do."
