Spring After Colony 255
After the deaths of Heero, Anne, Sally, Zechs, Lucrezia, Relena
The best things about holidays, Quatre Winner thought to himself as he sat as a table shaded by a large umbrella and looked out across the lawn of Bridgelight, was having his family together again as much as possible. Getting to see his children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren had become a special treat for the seventy-five year old man who had once had all his loved ones within hands reach.
Meiran, his strong and proud granddaughter, had blossomed into quite the young lady, and even though she and her husband, Vance, lived in up in space with their two year old daughter, Kara, his oldest grandchild made sure her family visited earth at least four times a year--and Emerald Gardens was always on their vacation agenda. Right now Kara was petting the bunny rabbits under her mother's and grandfather's--Quatre's younger son, Tristan's-- watchful eyes.
Dakota and Jasmine, both Preventers now, had also returned 'home' for the weekend and sat at another table talking Duo's and Trowa's ears off. Though their parents, Trinity and Adrian, hadn't managed to slip away from Sank for the weekend, Yuy and Maxwell had and were playing hooky from their Princess- and Princely duties by listening avidly to their Preventer cousins as Yuy rocked Dylan's youngest baby, Odin.
Sixteen year old Hisoka was enjoying long drags from a cigarette and watching over his little cousins--ten year old Angel, eight year old Luke, and six year old Skye--while his mother, Mara Jade, shot him dirty looks as she bounced little Cassandra on her knee, mumbling something about people ruining their bodies. Calista, who was sitting at the same table as her sister-in-law seemed quite nondistressed about her nephew's bad habits, or that he was smoking near her eight year old, or even that Mara Jade hadn't even *asked* if she could hold Cassandra. Actually, Calista was looking pooped. It was too bad Julian's was grounded in another country because of a snow storm.
At one of the other tables, the fabulous four--as the family had taken to calling Galen, Leah, Gabriel, and Tina--sat whispering conspiratorially as they chowed down on food. The four really were amazing together, practically incapable of separation. They'd even gone so far as to get an apartment in town together. Kids!
Dylan and Nikki were sitting at another table with Wufei, all faces looking glum. No doubt at what they were discussing... Quatre sighed and lifted himself out of his chair. Triton and Kit would be returning home soon, but there was still some time before dinner.
"I just wish," Dylan was sighing, "that he was still here, you know. I really wanted him to see.... it's just not fair," the man ended, fiddling with his braid in a manner much like Duo's.
"Terrorism is very rarely fair," Quatre put in before Wufei could. "And your dad *is* here," the patriarch smiled. "He's watching over you and your sisters and your children, and he's smiling like the proud parent he is." He squeezed Dylan's shoulder.
"Grampa Heero would be mighty pissed if he knew you were moping around about him not being here instead of having fun, Uncle D," Dakota gruffed, turning around in her seat to look at the group behind.
Yuy smiled. "He'd probably say, 'You're alive! Life is precious and you should enjoy yours to the fullest!'"
"We should stop by the graves," Meiran said as she held an exhausted bunny in her arms for Kara to pet. "Change the flowers and bring him some of those chocolate coconut eggs he likes so much."
"I have some jelly beans in the care we could leave for Grampa Zechs," Leah chirped.
Angel and Skye Maxwell were hanging off of Hisoka's arms and squealing as he swung them. "We can go pick some flowers," the teen offered, offering a lopsided grin. "I think I saw some growing on the other side of the woods."
Quatre smiled at his family. Even with Heero's and Zechs's physical bodies gone, he could still feel both of them, there smiling with him. Yes, holidays were very good indeed. Especially ones that allowed for picnics outside with young life running wild.
Once, when they were young, Quatre had asked his then lovers and soon to be husbands which was their favorite season.
"Autumn," Duo replied readily. "Everything's so brilliant with color!"
After a bit of thought, Wufei answered, "I always preferred summer."
It took a questioning look for Trowa to be prodded to say, "I'm more of a winter person."
But Quatre and Heero had agreed. Spring was so alive. Young and full of possibilities, ready to blossom and shine. It was the life the survived and was reborn after the death of winter. Anything was possible in spring.
Life after death.... to be reborn young and fresh and new... anything was possible.
Quatre smiled as he plucked his grandbaby Cassandra from Mara Jade and slung her against his side. So many wonderful and exciting possibilities.
End Part 4
Okay, here's the run down:
In AC 248-249, a series of terrorism acts began. In an effort to help stop
the these acts, the gundam boys came out of reserve, as it were. In
November or 249, Preventers Head Quaters in the capitol city of Eart was
attacked. Over three hundred people were in the building, including Sally
Po, Lady Une, and Heero Yuy. Heero did not die in the building, but was
later taken off life support--an act which I believe hurts more than someone
dying... Zechs died a year later, of more natural causes. For some strange
reason, his body finally gave up fighting. Damn Wild Turkey... {sighs}
Odin Maxwell, Dylan and Nikki's youngest child, is named after his father's
mentor. Odin and Callie's daughter Cassandra are the only two grandchildren
Heero and Zechs didn't get a chance to meet...
To my current knowledge, this is the only Spring fic that will take place
after the deaths of Heero and Zechs. If you have any questions concerning
