Traditions Revisited: Spring Traditions by Andrea Readwolf

Part Three: The Grand Egg Hunt

Spring After Colony 241

At the ripe old age of thirteen, Meiran was way too old to go on an egg hunt with her little sisters and brothers and cousins, which left her feeling pretty much 'out' of the whole shebang until her Grampa Trowa asked her if she wanted to come along and help hide some eggs.

"Gonna help us, eh?" Grampa Duo asked, catching a glimpse of her in the rear view mirror as he started the jeep.

"This is the last of them," Quatre said handing Heero an egg carton and then wiping his brow. "Be careful and don't stay out too late."

"Yes, mother," Duo quipped as he shifted to drive and the jeep pulled out of Emerald Gardens on it's way to the woods behind Bridgelight. "How many years now we been doin' this?" the long silver-haired man asked, scratching his chin.

"Hiding eggs?" Trowa clarified, stretching his legs.

"Yeah."

"Well, let's see, um, you and Quatre did it first, remember?" Trowa half frowned half smiled at the memory. "You hid notes all over the house."

"Yeah," Heero yawned. "They hid something like fifty tiny plastic eggs with little clues in 'em that led to three huge eggs..."

"Oh yeah," Duo grinned. "I'd forgotten about that. So that was, what? 97? 98?"

"Ninety-seven, I think," Trowa answered.

"So, Grampa Duo, you and Grampa Quatre hid eggs?" Meiran asked innocently, knowing what strings to pull to get a story out of her grandparents.

"Yep, guess so," the braided man answered.

"It wasn't until after your mommy was born that we started hiding the eggs over at Bridgelight, though," Heero smiled. "It was getting pretty hard to hid eggs with six little kids running amuck." "So Grampa Zechs offered to let us hide eggs in the woods behind Bridgelight," Trowa continued. "We've been hiding eggs there every year since."

"Neat," the thirteen-year old pronounced, inducing a smile from her three present grandparents. "So what was in the eggs Grampa Duo and Grampa Quatre hid?"

Three choked laughs and several coughing fits answered questions and Meiran decided it was one of those grown-up things that she probably didn't want to know anything about and replied to her own question with a, "Never mind."
