Traditions Revisited: Spring Traditions by Andrea Readwolf

Part Two: Painting Eggs

Spring After Colony 246

Julian and Nicolette were in Whispering Pines's kitchen setting up mugs full of warmed colored water. Nikki set a large bowl of cooled hard boiled eggs on the table while Jules finished setting out spoons and paper towels.

"Are those going to be enough?" he asked, eying the bowl of eggs as his 'sister-in-law' dug into a drawer to pull out crayons.

"Probably not," she chirped, and then with a wink and grin she added, "Which is why I sent Dylan out with Dakota and Jasmine to get some more!"

In her high chair, Angel "talked" at her momma. Nikki was already snatching up some paper she'd left on the counter earlier and swapped the soggy bowl of cheerios with paper and crayons.

Leah stomped into the kitchen covered in red blotches. "This is an injustice!" The twelve year old announced.

"What's the matter, baby?" Julian asked as Nikki went to open to door for the stomping feet out on the patio.

"There's throwing *crayons* at me! I'm not *paper* and they're trying to *draw* on me! Make them stop, Daddy," the girl began to pout, crossing her arms as Aunt Mara Jade, Uncle Dylan, and Dakota and Jasmine handed their shopping bags full of boiled eggs over to Nikki or the counter.

"Who's throwing crayons," Aunt Mara asked calmly enough, starting to remove carton after carton of eggs.

Meanwhile, Dylan took the opportunity to plant a kiss on Nikki's lips before moving to the sink to peel an egg. "Courtesy of the Emerald Gardens Kitchen Staff," he nodded towards the bags of eggs.

"No one, it doesn't matter," Leah mumbled turning to go back out into the living room for a quick escape.

But Aunt Mara followed her and snatched three flying crayons from the air. "Time out, the three of you, now."

"I told them they'd better stop," eight year old Adrienne said calmly, not looking up from her coloring.

Three pairs of eyes looked sulking up at Mara Jade, but they should have known better. "That's ten minutes," she announced, making a point of looking at her watch. Bryce, Hisoka, and little Michael reluctantly climbed off the couches. "Fifteen minutes."

It wasn't until the very last pair of little feet were up the stairs and in the guest bedroom that Mara Jade turned to the other two. "The eggs are ready. Are you coming or staying?"

Adrienne replaced all her crayons in the box and picked up her drawing before following her mother back into the kitchen. Leah followed at a length, feeling bad for getting her cousins in trouble.

"I wanna make a black egg," Dakota was saying as the teen picked up an egg and examining it for any flaws.

Two sets of pounding feet clobbered up the back porch and Galen and Gabriel stumbled in panting.

"I win," Gabriel gasped, and Galen wheezed a, "Whatever," before both collapsed into chairs at the table.

Mara scowled at both boys before looking pointedly at the kitchen sink. Still aching to catch their breaths, Galen and Gabriel trudged over to the sink to wash their hands as instructed. Just as they were sitting back down and reaching for an egg each, a bam from upstairs sounded as someone stomped on the floor.

"Excuse me," Mara sighed, slipping away from the table where she was dying eggs with Adrienne and Leah.

"Hn. Purple's not too bad," Dakota was heard saying as her mother slipped out the door.

There were more foot steps outside on the porch--these set at a much more sedated pace then the boys--and the door opened to reveal Quatre, Trowa, and Duo with bouquets of flowers.

"I didn't want to believe it," the snowy-haired patriarch began, "when Duo told me you had no flowers set up, but I made sure to pick up a few just in case. I hope we're not too late to dye--"

At this point an ear-splitting wail drifted down through the ceiling, shortly followed by Mara Jade's reappearance, still scowling. "Gee, didn't I just see you?" she looked over to her fathers, the scowl dropping a bit as she went over and kissed each older man's cheek. "Okay, let's get this show on the road," she said, folding up her sleeves.
