Summary: Heero and his people have a job to do... and it just might
be very rewarding.
Plans ran through Heero's head. There was so much to do, but the reward promised to be well worth the effort. Learning everything he could from J about the situation proved there would be massive complications. His people, though, were resilient and far harder to discourage than anyone in the world. They were used to being pre- judged, shut out, stared at, and harassed. They also gave as good as they got. A trait that would come in handy for this little mission.
And what a job J had given them! Find a would-be killer. Keep him or her from hurting anyone else. Administer justice; something Wufei'd enjoy. Best of all, protect the many lovely targets. Men and women who would need round the clock guarding. Maybe even a bit of comforting. Fringe benefits were a wonderful thing.
Marching out to his waiting friends, Heero couldn't keep his mind off a certain longhaired youth he had seen that morning. J was sure the boy would be a target. How many of the others could be as well? G'd given him a list of town citizens he suspected were either bi or gay, complete with pictures, histories, and addresses. Already a list was forming in the young man's mind. Which of his people could possibly fit well with each potential victim?
Sephiroth and Zechs had a thing for handsome blondes and would no doubt find Principal Treize delightful. Especially since he was known to as a stuffy, rules oriented person. The pair thrived on breaking the rules. Who knew if they could get the Principal to enjoy it as well?
Wufei and Trowa could guard Quatre Winner. Such an angelic looking youth might be exactly what they needed bring a little laughter into the lives of the sober couple. Both men had been through a lot in their pasts; things that left deep scars. Neither were given to joking or joining in-group activities. Such isolationism bothered Heero. Not that he doubted either's devotion or loyalty. Maybe this eighteen-year-old bundle of innocence was just the cure.
Viktor still hadn't found the one for him; perhaps this tiny town held the missing love of his life. A few years back he'd been arrested in a small town like this. The sheriff and his deputies used batons to steal their prisoner's virginity. Scars still marred his wrists, ankles, inside his thighs, and places better not discussed. Heero personally ordered the town to be burned down. Unfortunately, nothing could turn back time. Viktor didn't trust people like before and so had a hard time getting close to anyone the group tried to fix him up with. J was certain, however, the answer was close by and wanted to speak with him alone.
Then there was the threesome of Ryoga, Hiei, and Kurama. Without anyone else who enjoyed games quite the way they did, the men turned to each other. No love was lost between them at times, while others nothing could keep them apart. Everyone prayed for a balancing aspect to join their group. A person to quell the fights, arguments, and anger. O pointed him to two young men who should fit the bill perfectly.
Sima Yi and Zhou Yu had been along long enough. What they needed was someone as clever as each man yet without the seriousness that burdened the pair of strategists. A man or woman with a sense of humor, quick mind, and love of laughter. Having an abundance of energy would probably be a good thing as well.
Lulu might never find a new lover after the death of her husband. However, he died four years ago. Surely being alone wasn't helping the stern, strong woman any. A P.E. coach at the local high school might just be the one to finally break past her barriers. If he lived long enough; Lulu did have a sharp tongue and even meaner right hook. His people could usually take of themselves, Heero remembered with a grin.
He'd have to be careful though. Too many would only see what the group appeared to be. That could be dangerous. If the townspeople were in on the attack of the boy in J's house, this whole town was one big minefield. While many of his "gang" were straight, just as many were not. Telling them to be on their best behavior was useless. Heero smiled at the thought. "Best behavior" for some meant not beating the hell out of an idiot.
"Suitable" clothing was going to be provided by O and S and should make moving around in town easier; the men had planned for something like for long time now. Although they left it up to him to pick which members could blend-in with the townsfolk best. He didn't know if those chosen would be insulted.
Looking up he realized he was outside and facing his people. Humor danced in their eyes. It wasn't often Heero got caught off guard.
"Well, oh fearless leader, what'd J want?" Une called.
"And does it involve those delicious morsels we saw this morning?" Dios' voice carried from the back.
"Do we get to break things?" Wolverine growled. It was too long since the last really good fight.
"Are we going to need a fast escape route?" Quistis always the practical one, chimed in.
Soon there was a deafening din of questions. Too many to keep track of. Cursing, Heero realized he was never going to get a word in edgewise unless he yelled. Sighing, he drew in a deep breath.
"Perhaps, if we calmed down and let him speak, we would have the answers to our questions." Auron was just loud enough to be heard; as the oldest member of the gang, his voice carried weight.
Heero let out his breath into the still silence. No one moved. However, the eagerness and need to ask questions was reflected on all their faces. Given the nature of his people, he was very impressed at how much control they were showing. Usually they preferred to jump first and worry about landing later; a fact which caused his strategists to despair.
"J wants us to do something for him. It could be dangerous and will definitely require us to be on our best behavior." This caused a collective groan. "Mostly." That got cheers. "Now here is what I need everyone to do."
For the next few hours Heero laid out what plans he came up with. Those who were good at strategy, Zhou Yu, Sima Yi, and Braska, helped him flesh out the more simple ideas. Une passed out biographies and pictures of the citizens as well as maps of the town. Not a normally studious group, everyone pour over the information, memorizing facts each found important. This was important. Innocent lives were at stake and no one was going to take any chances. It made their leader proud to watch such dedication.
J sent G to call in several people for private chats. Viktor, Zhen Ji, Gremino, and Lulu spent hours with the old man talking about something secret. When they came back, their faces were grave, but their eyes were deadly.
Finally dinnertime rolled around. S brought out a huge cauldron of stew with the help of O. No alcohol showed up as it might have on another night. There were too many innocents depending on them; no one wanted to do anything that might jeopardize catching a would-be killer and meeting certain townspeople.
As the evening grew older, bedrolls were laid out, some taking papers with them to read under the stars. Small conversations broke out as well as other sounds. Some could not be mistaken as anything but cries of pleasure.
Looking out over the group, Heero could see shadows moving together without any regard for the possibility of being seen. Few harbored ideas about privacy and after so many few years together they all knew no one would play peeping tom. Everyone would be too busy with each other. Heero on the other hand was the one person no one minded watching. He might just be attracted to a group and all thought he should relax more. Sounds grew louder as cold blue eyes peered around him.
Already Ryoga labored over Kurama as Hiei drew soft sounds from him. Ryoga always moaned in such an interesting manner; half gasp, half full moan and all need. More than a couple members wanted to see if he could make other noises, but Kurama and Hiei were possessive. Violently so. The threesome really needed someone to balance it.
Zechs was sobbing as Sephiroth slowly drew out their time together, making it sheer torturous pleasure. Before Midnight the begging should begin. By morning neither man would have the energy to move.
Une and Quistis were finding new and interesting uses for whips. Sharp cracks filled the air. Though who was on the receiving end of those lashes was unclear.
Further away others were sweating, relieving stress. Heero didn't begrudge them any of it. It had been more than a month since the last time they could stop and relax. Bad things were coming; everyone knew it. Now might be the last time any of them felt safe for a long time. Tomorrow was the start of a dangerous mission, his people would be ready. Too bad for the town.
