A Small Town Shake Up by Phoenix

Part Four: Flashback

Heero knocked politely on Professor J's door. The house he now lived in was a huge, stately manor; nothing like the biker thought the older man would buy. In the years since J handed over control of the Wings, the biker group, no word ever came from him. The former leader trusted Heero implicitly. Furthermore, J was fiercely independent; as he taught his protégée to be. All this meant J must be in serious trouble to send for the young man.

The door was opened by another gray-haired man with a huge nose. Professor G. He had been J's lover in the Wings.

"You made good time, Heero," G remarked dryly. "I lose the bet."

A slight smile curved the Japanese man's lips. The two older men were always making bets on how well Heero could do things. G usually lost. Of course, the man didn't really mind; J was an excellent seme.

"Where's J?" Heero questioned.

"Always to the point, eh my boy?" G laughed softly and gestured for the Asian man to follow him.

Heero noted the house was in excellent condition and showed signs of having more than just two occupants. The walls were painted clean beige and the floors were covered with a darker color carpet. Curtains hung over the windows cutting off almost all light. In every room, lamps burned with bright bulbs. Finally, the pair reached the back of the house.

The gang leader smelled cleaning solution and alcohol; it reminded him of the smell all hospitals had. Fear seized his guts. Had something happened to his mentor? Pushing past G, Heero raced to the room the smell was coming from. The man paused at the door, surprised by what he found.

A figure, covered in bandages lay on a bed in the center of the room. The body was too small to be J's and a quick look showed the white-haired man checking the display on several monitors connected to the body. Several different IV's ran to the bed and disappeared beneath the bandages. Whatever had happened to this person, it had been very bad.

"J," he whispered, not even realizing he was doing so until later.

"It's about time," J grumped still watching the monitors and taking notes. "Come over and meet the reason for your being here."

Heero approached the bed and took a good look at the almost-mummy. From the outline he could see, this person was a young man, perhaps not even beyond his teenage years. The monitors told him the patient was unconscious and in a deep sleep. A good thing considering the amount of bandages. Casts covered most of his right arm and leg, and one bound his left wrist. What was visible of the boy's face was covered in busies and stitches. The entire look-over took less than a minute and Heero turned to J, summarizing what he guessed.

"Very good." J praised. "You are quite right. Some bastard worked this kid over and almost killed him. We found him unconscious and bleeding all over our doorstep. He's a senior at the local high school and a friend of Professor O, who was tutoring him in math and history." J turned to back to the patient and ran a gentle hand over a bruised cheek.

"He's a good kid, Heero. We all liked him. However, the wounds you see are not the extent of what we found." Taking a deep breath, J faced Heero. "This boy was brutally raped. The internal damage alone could have killed him. G suspects he was beaten after the rape and not before, so he was fully aware when the bastard did this."

"This town is your typical small town," G picked up the conversation. "Everyone knows everyone else and yet no one came looking for this boy. Do you know why?"

Heero didn't even try.

"Because he's gay," a voice behind him growled.

Heero spun to find Professor O. The man's eyes burned with anger and frustration.

"He told me during one of his tutoring sessions. It seems someone was sending him threatening notes and even went so far as to write graffiti on his house. Tam, that's his name, was scared and didn't know what to do. I told him to come here any time and we would protect him."

"Only his stalker got him first," Heero concluded.

"Yes," O hissed.

"Heero," J called for his protégé's attention. "We want you to find the one who did this. The townspeople have no intention of pursuing this matter and don't care if this boy lives or dies. They've already run his family out of town with constant harassment. The boy has yet to gain consciousness so we have no clues as to his attacker's identity." Heero's eyes took on that "Mission Accepted" look and J hastened to add more before the young man could acquiesce to his request. He did not want the Japanese biker to feel tricked.

"There's more, my boy. So listen. I've been doing some research on the people of this town. Based on my findings, there are a remarkable amount of gay and bi- citizens. We are currently trying to find out why, but we are certain of the facts. In addition to finding the bastard who attacked Tam, we want you to protect those citizens who fit the profile. How you protect them is up to you." The old man finished with a mischievous grin on his face.

Heero laughed. "So that's why you had us go by a particular intersection at that specific time."

"Beautiful aren't they." J said. "All of them fit the profile and are in danger. There are others and I am going to want to speak with most of the members of the gang."

"Fine," Heero growled, plans for revenge against the entire town and the attacker already crowding his mind. Especially plans for a certain longhaired young man. He and his people would claim the beauties they'd chosen and leave this town a smoking hole. Maniacal laughter echoed through the halls of the mansion. Outside, the gang members heard the sound and paused in their various activities. Evil grins split their faces and more than one began re-storing their gear to make room for the additions they knew were coming. This small town was in for a very big shake-up.
