Patience by Phoenix

Part One

Duo really hated being a Preventer right now. It wasn't that the job was boring or unrewarding, but this particular assignment grated on the former pilot's nerves. How could anyone stand to be around politicians for so long? If it weren't for the fact that a particularly successful assassin was after these people, Duo would storm out now! Especially after what Relena did.

The little minx wanted to separate him from Heero so she deliberately assigned him to guard five representatives from the colonies. Four of them turned out to be nice guys, but the fifth, oh he was a winner! Really. And from L2 to boot.

If he ever found she knew the man like younger men, well they would never find all the pieces. The jerk was all hands and promises. I'll give you this; I give you that. Riiiiight. Sure he would. Until something prettier came along. Duo'd fought too long and too hard to become some rich asshole's bedwarmer and trophy.

After all the Gundam pilots went through, he supposed this was just one more mission to endure. Of course, there was some good in Relena. When Treize stepped forward to seize control of Romefeller, it had looked like things were about to get even worse. Yet, the young Queen stood up to the man; impressing him some much, he listened to her plan for peace. She was smarter than most thought.

Relena knew Treize saw war as a way to bring out the best in the human spirit. It was an ideal he wouldn't give up easily, so she used it. Giving him a proposal for a peacekeeping force called the Preventers, the clever girl explained how the group would contain the best of the human race while keeping the worst, the part both rulers despised, in check. Each could have what they wanted.

Accepting the plan, Treize turned his attention to bringing Zechs back to the realm of sanity. Together, Relena and he went into space, and with the help of the Gundam pilots, brought the young Sank Prince home. Over the following three years, various battles were fought as factions assumed the new Peace Alliance meant weakness. Zechs healed and took a new name, Wind. Millardo Peacecraft and Zechs Marquise were dead. Treize became the leader of a special group of Preventers; of which there were only seven, himself included.

The Specials, as the groups came to be known, specialized in infiltration, information gathering, and bodyguarding. There were other things the young men did, but no one talked about such things. At least not and lived very long. So they worked together and formed a bond stronger than friendship and deeper than brothers. Something only those who risked everything together could ever really understand.

Once, a mission went terribly wrong and Heero and Treize disappeared for more than a month. Everyone but the remaining Specials gave them up for dead. Duo took it the hardest and spent every waking hour trying to find the pair. Wufei had Wind to ease the loss of his respected allies. Quatre had Trowa; the American had nothing but revenge.

Then, one night after working twenty-seven hours, Duo came home to two intruders. The men immobilized the exhausted pilot before he could land a single blow. Spitting out curses and promised of death, Duo struggled to break the iron grip of his captors. Then one of them did something completely unexpected; the man kissed him!

While the young man was stunned, the other one turned on the lights to reveal Heero held him still and Treize was kissing him. During their time missing, the two men worked things out between themselves. All that remained was claiming the loudmouth both had come to love. And claim they did!

Since the night of passion, the three were happy and content. Chuckling softly, Duo replayed the memories of their time together. Even Une couldn't fault the team they made. He depended on them and vice a versa. Which made things hard with this mission. The man's unwelcome advances often included a heavy dose of touching. The complaints he lodged were ignored.

Heero and Treize weren't any help either. They kept urging him to have a "little patience." Patience! With an octopus trying to get him alone? He'd see how much patience the pair had when cut them off until the mission was over. Served them right. Patience indeed.

"Ah, Duo, there you are," Relena's too loud voice called to him. Cursing silently, Duo turned to find his two worst nightmares had teamed up. Attached to her arm was the leech he'd been trying to avoid all morning.

"Ambassador Collins has been looking for you all morning," Relena continued, leading the man straight to him.

"I had to check the perimeter," The former pilot ground out. "Not a good time to have a Colony Representative around."

"Of course," the Sank Queen soothed. "But you're done now and I have to get to a meeting, so why don't escort the esteemed Ambassador to his quarters?" Though the tone was polite, the look in her eyes made it a command.

Could she be anymore blunt? Take him to his quarters. Sure. Right. Now he was certain she knew the kind of creep this guy was. Trying not to glare like Heero, he nodded and made a gesture for the man to start walking. Collins instead gripped Duo's arm as he had Relena's and began dragging the angry young man along.

The "Ambassador" kept up a steady patter of conversation as they walked. Hinting at how important the trade agreement would be for L2. What a shame it would be if he had to refuse it for some reason. In that moment, Duo hated the man. Forcing himself to calm down, he couldn't help rake his eyes over the man. He was six foot six, built like Rashid, and fifty-seven years old, but didn't look a day over forty. The man all but towered over Duo's five foot four height. Still, the pilot could tell from how he walked, the man was not a fighter. Giving him several bruises to cool his ardor might be fun, he told himself, but will only get me into way too much trouble.

As they turned the corner leading to the wing housing all the visiting representatives, Collins pushed Duo against the wall, pinning his wrists above his head in one meaty paw.

"Enough games," the man rumbled. "Relena told me you need someone to teach you some manners. I think I'm just the man for the job. When I'm done with you, my beauty, you'll know how to treat your betters."

Duo started to break free and teach his attacker some manners himself when his sensitive hearing picked up voices coming down the hall. Heero and Treize, having a discussion about inter-colony politics. If he played this just right, he could have revenge on his lovers and the big idiot holding him.

"Let me go Ambassador," he said loudly. "I've told you before, I'm not interested."

"What are you going to do, boy?" The older man laughed. "Complain again? They'll take my word over yours. Relena will see to that. Now just relax and enjoy it." Having said that, he leaned down and claimed a kiss from the pinned Preventer.

Duo struggled briefly, almost breaking free. Remembering his purpose, he weakened his fight and bit Collins.

"You little bitch!" The tall man roared.

"Let me go." Duo again ordered. "I don't want to hurt you, but I will."

"Hurt me?" The L2 Ambassador laughed. "You did your best and couldn't get free. Now find out what your bit of rebellion is going to cost you."

The man once again seized Duo's mouth, this time using enough force to seriously bruise him. His other hand ripped open the American's shirt and pushed past his belt, firmly squeezing the soft flesh between Duo's legs. The big man's entire body pinned his victim to the wall.

Violet eyes flew open in a mixture of surprise and pain. The former terrorist realized he was in a dangerous position. Before he could start planning a way out, two blurs appeared behind Collins, ripping him away from Duo.

Heero and Treize had waited at the corner thinking to later teaser their lover about the whole encounter. The more they heard, however, the angrier they became. The man's final declaration sent the pair into action. No one touched Duo without his permission. No one.

Treize threw the giant across the hall while Heero quickly checked out Duo. Seeing the slender Preventer was relatively unhurt, he joined the Aristocrat in beating Collins to a pulp. Treize delivered several nasty kicks to the man's crotch. Heero snapped the arm which had pinned Duo's. All this in the space of a few seconds.

"Treize! Heero!" Duo's yell cut through the red haze clouding their minds. "Let him go. It's over."

Two stopped as if a switch had been flipped. Then they were beside him, asking if he was alright, if there was anything they could do. Now they were concerned!

"You know it would have been nice if you'd listened to me earlier," He hissed at them, too angry to do otherwise. "I tried to tell you again and again and you just told me to be patient. Well look where it got me!"

"Duo," Treize began, only to be cut off.

"Not now. Right now I want to be alone." Duo stormed down the hall.

"Where are you going?" Heero called after him.

"To take a shower. I need it. Badly." He also needed to get himself back under control. Witnessing the raw, unreasoning fury his lovers showed on his behalf was frightening. Since that mission where they went missing, the pair hid something from everyone. The only glimpse anyone got was when Duo was endangered; at those times, Heero and Treize became more animal than man. Neither would explain why. So the American went to bathe and think.

Watching him go, the two men realized their mistake and hoped to be able to make up for it. In the meantime, they dumped the Ambassador in his room and called Sally Po to take care of him. For the rest of the week, each carefully watched Duo without his knowledge. Any time someone came close to him, his guardians growled deep in their throat. Five days after Ambassador Collins assaulted the longhaired former pilot, the huge man was found in his room, mutilated almost beyond recognition.

The only part of his body not sliced into pieces was his face, which bore a look of such pain and horror many lost their lunch after just a glimpse. As for the rest of him, all the skin of his body, except his face, was peeled off, a hot instrument following the knife trial ensuring the victim did not bleed to death. Each digit from his hands and feet were cleanly cut off at every joint. Then his arms and legs joined the carefully stacked pile. Then the inhabitant of L2's intestines had been wrapped around his throat and hung him from the ceiling fan. Lastly, his penis was severed and shoved so far down his throat Sally was hard pressed to say whether Collins choked to death or died from the hanging. The assassin had struck again.

Relena publicly accused Duo of dereliction of duty even though he'd been reassigned three days before. She even went so far as to suggest the Preventer let it happen as revenge. Maybe did it himself. Wind and Wufei jumped in, accusing her of stupidity and blindness. Things escalated into a yelling match while Duo sat stunned by the accusations. No one noticed Treize and Heero standing in the shadows, eyes fixed on the Sank Queen, twin growls echoing from their throats.
