Day of the Mothers by Phoenix

Part Two

Kit Bloom carefully stepped over the unconscious soldier at her feet. She had broken into an OZ intelligence installation on L3 to find any information about her missing son and the sons of her comrades. Unfortunately, the men here were smarted than the average soldiers and her cover was blown too soon. In the end, however, all they personnel could do was delay her; she got what she wanted and had to leave.

There was little time left before her intrusion was discovered and the others needed to see the information she gathered. Not only did OZ know most of their children's identities, but three of them were captive on the Moon. If only that damn Lady Une hadn't found J at virtually the same time as Hera. Given a few hours, the former assassin would have had the one armed bastard confessing everything. Then the same bitch managed to round up all the Doctors before anyone but Heather got a chance to face them. And Heather refused to discuss what happened between her and her former lover.

Still, crying over spilt milk wasn't in Kit's nature. With three sons accounted for, all the women need do was break into the base and save them. Sounded so simple. Wouldn't be. Her own son was pretending to be a member of OZ; he looked just like his father. The organization was using him to fly experimental mech along with Hera's son. A fact that did not sit well with Kit. How dare anyone use children like this? As soldiers? It was wrong. Before the women were through, quite a few people were going to pay for this war.

A sudden beeping alerted Kit to an incoming message. It was a Code One Priority. Pilot 02 had been captured and was being sent to the Moon Base. Well wasn't that interesting. Four sons all in one place. But where was Quatre? And where was Hera's other son? Of all the things Kit regretted not finding in the OZ database, the one she felt worst about was the lack of information on her lover's first born child.

Taking the print out of 02's capture, Kit quickly made her way to the shuttle bay. Everyone was going to meet on L1 and share information. All she had to do was get there.

The shuttle she'd brought was fueled and waiting for her; apparently the OZ men were still unconscious. Strapping in, the determined woman left L3 unaware of what she left behind.

In the OZ intelligence facility, the men Kit Bloom thought slept watched her depart with mixed expressions.

"She is clear, Excellency," the oldest looking man said to a computer screen. A screen that held the face of Treize Khusrenada.

"Very good," Treize said. "I am proud of you. Now I think you should destroy whatever you can and leave. Romefeller has already dispatched men to replace you. I believe you know what that means."

"Yes Sir!" The men chorused.

"Good. Be safe." Treize moved to terminate the link when the youngest man spoke up.

"Excellency!" Seeing his leader paused, the young man rushed to continue. "What do you want us to do? Should we aide that woman and her friends? Seek out Lady Une? Sir, please. How can we help you?"

For a long moment, the ginger haired man sat silently. At last, a grin grew. "Do what you can to help that woman from the shadows. Do not expose yourselves. I have enough innocent blood on my hands."

With the final command given, the connection broke. The men hurriedly destroyed anything of use in the building; when the men from Romefeller arrived, nothing worked and the information was gone. Needless to say, Dermail was not happy. After much consideration, he decided to take that anger out on the person he was certain could be held responsible: Treize. It was time for the little upstart to learn his place.

In the meantime, Kit Bloom set the autopilot of her shuttle and settled back. She knew nothing of the aide given her and other thoughts occupied her mind. It had been more than ten years since the women had seen their sons. Each torn from their family by men they trusted or at least never thought would go as far as happened. Hera had been the first imprisoned.

Of the five of them, Hera was the oldest and perhaps the hardest. She'd been an assassin before being locked up. It was how she met her husband, Odin Lowe. The pair were working for different employers yet assigned to the same target. They met while doing a routine sweep of the area and it became a game to see who would get to the victim first. Hera won.

She'd thought Odin would be furious; instead he asked her out. He said he always followed his emotions and they told him Hera was the woman for him. Over the next two years, they had fallen in love. All might have ended in a twisted storybook fashion if not for the last job Odin Lowe ever took. He killed Heero Yuy.

Odin had never been a man who looked far into the future. Hera and he had a son and the last hit was supposed to set them up for life. The result was enslavement of the colonies and deaths of hundreds of innocent people. Odin Lowe couldn't stand it. When Doctor J approached the guilty ridden man, he felt compelled to make things right; even if it meant sacrificing his oldest son.

Hera had been furious. The female killer told him she would send their second child to stay with friends and then go get her first born back. Anyone who got in her way was going to die. Knowing his wife could do exactly as she claimed, Odin drugged her. After much discussion with the Doctors, it was decided to send her to a little known prison colony.

Yet, Doctor J wasn't even satisfied with what he'd done to the Lowe family. Though there were no records of what was done with Odin and Hera's oldest child, Kit felt certain he was dead. J was that cold. The rebel scientist then demanded the couples other son. Such unmitigated gall! Odin fled with the boy only to end up dead several years later and his last child under J's control.

Of course most of this was mere supposition on Kit's part. Put together from what Hera eventually told them, the data from OZ, and simple understanding of human nature. J found it highly appropriate, and no doubt amusing, that the son of Heero Yuy's killer be the one to bring about lasting peace. Yes, he would have gone after that poor innocent boy. If for no other reason than revenge.

So much betrayal and pain. Elena, Quatrina, Heather, Hera. All betrayed. Only she had not been imprisoned by family. No, hers was a different story.

The Bloom family was comprised of one son, an older daughter, and their parents. For years Kit and her husband used the cover of traveling gypsies to sabotage the Alliance. One year, they had run across a small group of rebels on L3. The man in charge wanted to create a huge machine called Gundam, but needed a pilot. Seeing how smart, agile, and clever her son Triton was, the Doctor had the nerve to ask to train him. Of course he was refused. Using a child to fight a war? Never.

Yet, all their refusals came to nothing. The gypsies had been caught in the middle of battle and little Triton lost forever. Or so she thought. The rebels had managed to save both her and Catherine. It was strange how the men showed up at exactly right moment and the troops withdrew at same time. They only found the two females. However, they choose to send her little girl away and put Kit in a colony prison just in case they could use her someday. Perhaps to force her son to pilot that awful machine.

Over the years, no one came for her. No one contacted her or told her what became of her children. Of all the things that happened to her in prison, not knowing about Cat and Triton was the worst. Now all the widow had was a picture of Trowa Barton in an OZ uniform. How ironic. Did he know his real name? How had the Doctors found him again? Did he know his sister? Did he know he had a mother?

Tears welled in Kit's eyes. What was he like? Had he grown into a good person? The picture told her nothing. A moment of rare rage seized the woman and she cursed everything. Damning the Doctors, fate, Earth, the Colonies, Odin Lowe, OZ, Romefeller, Treize Khusrenada, and herself.

When the emotion wore itself out, Kit stared blankly into space. None of them wanted their boys to be touched by violence. No matter what, each mother looked at the pilots as their baby; always would. Now, though, each child had grown into a killer. Yes, they killed to free and protect the Colonies, but they still killed.

'They're too young to have to bear this!' Kit silently shrieked at the universe. No one answered.

"All this being alone isn't good for me," Kit griped. "Not after having been around Hera and the others for so long."

Checking her course one last time, the former prisoner settled into an uneasy sleep. Dreams of death and destruction interlaced with those of her lover and friends; their first meeting, becoming a force seeking freedom, and loving each other. The future was too uncertain. All any of them had thought of was finding their children and now they had. But could they save them? Even from themselves? She hoped so.
