Day Of The Mothers by Phoenix

Part One

J felt a prickle along the skin of his neck. For days now, he'd felt as if a target were riding on his back. Over and over, the old man told himself it was just nerves. The small prison colony P-6 hadn't reported in as usual and considering who the only important prisoners were such a lapse did tend to set off alarms bells in his mind. Still, no one ever escaped P-6. How could they? They were weak; didn't have what it took to be ruthless. That's why they were prisoners and not fighting to save t he colonies.

A rasp of steel on steel signaled the opening of his lab. Cursing his getting old, the Doctor turned slowly to find a fierce Japanese woman with cobalt eyes watching him, a gun pointed right between his eyes. He had no doubt she would pull the trigger. From the look on her face, only one thing still kept him alive; he knew something she didn't and it was information she would kill to gain.

"Ah," he said, keeping his voice reasonable and calm, "Ms. Lowe. It's been a long time."

"Where are my sons, J?" The woman growled, completely ignoring his greeting. It was just like her, the Doctor mused silently. So much like her sons: focused, determined, and so damn hard to kill. Then there was the issue of control. He had been forced to abandon the older brother for the younger. This lead to the death of Odin as the man refused to give both his sons to the cause. It was regrettable, but necessary. J realized his biggest mistake was not killing the women as well. Now he would probably pay for it. Unless Hera Lowe made a mistake, the likelihood of which was incredibly small.

'I was far too softhearted,' J grumped to himself. Out loud, he sought information.

"Did all of you escape or is this a singular visit?"

The woman smiled cruelly. "You men always did underestimate us. We are all free, not that you will be able to warn the others. We've come for our sons and we mean to have them." A click warned J that the gun was now cocked. He was walking a very thin line. The woman hadn't changed at all. She was still one of the most deadly assassins in the Colonies.

Thoughts filled his mind. If all of the women had managed to get away, then Operation Meteor was in a great deal of danger. Not one of the escapees would rest until they knew where the pilots were and contacted them. Once the women knew what had been done to their sons, the Doctors would be lucky if they died quickly. J shuddered at the thought of what Hera could do. Thinking fast, he ran down a list of the women and tried to think of possible weaknesses.

Hera had been a master assassin before she met Odin Lowe. She was an expert at both armed and unarmed combat; could seduce almost anyone, and had temper that frightened terrorists. Odin became her only weakness as their love grew. Together, the pair produced two remarkable sons. J convinced Odin to allow his eldest boy to become a pilot in order to ease the guilt of having killed the original Heero Yuy. The white-haired man found it ironic that the son of Yuy's killer now fought to save his dream and even carried his name; his real name long forgotten.

The younger J had used guilt to gain one son. Hera came after them for the sacrifice and Odin drugged his wife long enough for the men to send her off to P-6. Then boy proved useless; the training from his mother made the child stubborn and far to hard to manipulate. It became necessary to abandon the boy on a colony and attain the second son. Hera might actually thank him for killing Odin, after all, he betrayed her. Yet, with Odin gone, so was her weakness.

Chang Elena would be the second most dangerous, after Heero's mother. The Asian woman had grown up on L-5 and was an expert at marital arts. The only man to defeat her was Chang Chen, her husband. The mother of Chang Wufei was small and petite in body, but not in spirit. Chen's chauvinist attitude caused many fights in their arranged marriage. The birth of her son only increased her determination to break away from her husband and his clan. Fortunately, Chen managed to catch the rebellious female before she could make good on her plans. Of course, young Wufei complicated matters even more by taking after his mother, but that problem was remedied by the apparent death of his wife. The boy's guilt made manipulating his so easy and he fought like a man possessed. Chang Wufei was the only weakness this woman would have; perhaps they could use him against his mother. As a last resort, Meiran could always be "resurrected."

Or maybe Duo's mom, Heather Khusrenada could be considered the most dangerous; the woman had always been so unpredictable. Treize's big sister never did what she was told and often acted in a manner that led many to question the state of her sanity. An undeniably beautiful woman, she had originally worked closely with J's colleague G. The two were very close, however, she too refused to allow her son to become a Gundam pilot. Unable to convince the fiery noblewoman to compromise, G had his men arrest her and she joined the group on P-6. After all these years, it was impossible to predict what weakness the woman would have. J did know she would seek out her son, though. Perhaps this might be turned to his advantage. If the Doctors could tell the pilots these women were OZ spies or assassins, the boys would take care of the problem.

He went back to running the list through his mind, keeping his plan filed away for later. The easiest would no doubt be Quatrina Winner; she was too gentle to be a threat. Her strong empathy meant nothing she did could hurt those nearby. Of all those imprisoned, the Arab woman was the most helpless. He'd always felt a twinge of guilt for sending such a sensitive person to a maximum-security prison colony. This woman's weakness was her empathy. To disable her, all they needed to do was kill someone while she was in the area.

A sudden thought wiped out the satisfaction he felt knowing Quatrina's weak point. Kit Bloom could have already infiltrated the rebellion and learned where the boys are. The woman, like her son, was an expert at fitting in; no group could keep either of the Blooms out, as none would ever guess who they really were. If the woman had managed to infiltrate one of the groups helping the pilots, she could easily find all the boys. Yes, this was a disaster.
