Dragon's Own by Phoenix

Part Four

Twin shadows flitted through the dark corridors of the Elven
Palace. As large a city, the building housed all those with royal
blood and their retainers. However, due to its size, it was a maze
to any who did not know the paths.

"It will take weeks to locate them at this rate," the first shadow
spat out in disgust as they paused at yet another intersection.

"That is why I have asked two others to help," the second laughed
softly. "You should plan ahead better, Noin."

"I just never expected the elves to be so extravagant."

"They are overly proud," a new voice joined them as two more shadows
took form. It nodded to the pair. "Zechs. Noin."

"Heero," Zechs nodded to the first newcomer. "Walker." To the
second.

"Are we to leave any witnesses or evidence we were here?" Heero
always got right to the heart of the matter.

Noin sighed. She did not like working with this particular pair.
Having never bonded with anyone, they tended to look at life without
a sense of humor; duty was everything and should be performed with
ruthless efficiency.

"Do not allow anyone to see you. Our Master cannot be suspected of
this." She ordered. Heero merely nodded in acknowledgement.

"Which do you want?" Walker's melodious voice cut through the
woman's tension. It was his best weapon and could charm anyone into
doing anything. Anything.

"Take the King. Noin and I will deal with Treize. I wish to see
the man who would throw away such a beauty as Duo." Zechs' voice
was little more than a growl. Certainly negotiating to get help was
worthy, but to give up someone with a love as deep as the mortal's
was sheer cruelty and folly. Nothing could have kept him from
saving Noin were she in Duo's place. Did elf love work
differently? Perhaps the immortal no longer cared; comfortably
housed in the palace again, he might have changed his mind about all
he gave up for a short lived human.

"Do you want him alive?" Heero's eyes positively glowed at the
thought of killing the little blond who had caused Master Wufei so
much pain.

"If you kill him," Noin sighed, "nothing will get resolved."

"Very well." And the pair faded back into the shadows.

"Are you sure they will keep themselves under control?"

"They might be young and given to fits of temper," her partner said
while wrapping his arms around her. "Yet they have never failed to
do as told and stay within the limits given. Now I think we should
hurry and find our target before they find theirs. They will not
let us forget it if they succeed first."

Laughing, they raced into the shadows and disappeared. In that
darkness time moved differently; flowing like wind around them, the
darkness offered protection and succor. Room after room failed to
contain the man they sought. Dawn approached too quickly and
despair began to fill them. Without Treize and the King, nothing
would change for Wufei. They couldn't let him die; not after all he
had done for their people.

As the first lances of false dawn light filled the sky, Noin and
Zechs walked out of the shadows into a room so filled with riches it
had to belong to King Quatre or Treize. A quick look revealed an
elf with forked eyebrows sleeping restlessly on the bed.

"Treize," Noin growled, moving forward with a furious _expression on
her face. "He is the only elf with eyebrows like that who would be
in this room."

"Careful," Zechs hissed grasping her arm. "Check for traps. Surely
a King would be well guarded."

Power gathered around them as they used Sight to look for any
magic. However, while hundreds of wards flared into visibility,
none were active.

"Why would he not use them?" Noin whispered. Was there a worse
trap somewhere?

"Duo," the man on the bed suddenly moaned and twisted his body as if
in pain.

The two wraiths froze.

"I'm sorry. I tried to protect you." Treize curled into a ball,
sobbing.

"He's still asleep." Marveled Zechs.

"And in such pain." Noin couldn't believe it. Treize suffered as
greatly as Wufei and Duo.

"I don't want to leave you, but it was the only way to save you.
The only way."

"If this continues," Zechs cautioned, "he will wake."

"Then best to take him now."

Shadows stretched out from every corner of the room. Slowly they
enveloped the bed.

"Time to join the others," Zechs turned away from the room and
vanished into the shadows as they receded from the bed, leaving it
empty.

Noin grinned widely. "I hope Wufei enjoys our little gift."

Then the first glimmer of sunlight filled the room. There was
nothing but furniture to enjoy the sunrise.

Not too far away, in the still shaded woods, four creatures moved
from shadow to shadow. The two taller males carried burdens over
their shoulders as the smaller figures ran as scouts.

"Is the King alive, Heero?" Noin demanded when he got close. She
despised Walker and Heero and in turn, they despised her right
back. They were brutal, cold killers. In fact Noin blamed them for
Zechs being deposed as leader; if he hadn't prevented the unbonded
pair from being killed for a botched mission, she and Zechs could
have been settled in their own palace with children.

"Of course." Heero ignored her tone. "Zechs wished it so."

"And you owe him."

Heero didn't respond; instead he moved farther ahead. They were
racing the morning now. Time for personal fights was later. A
single shard of light could kill any of them. So there could be no
delay caused by guards or pursuit. Thus he could not afford any
distractions.

"If you wish to continue this meet me after we return. I will not
put Zechs or Walker at risk over a personal problem." So saying, he
left her behind to fume.

"How dare he!" She hissed furiously.

"Enough, Noin," her lover ordered as he passed her. "You are
allowing your personal feelings to distract you. The sun will catch
us soon if we do not increase our pace."

Nodding, she forced herself to calm down, increasing her pace
tenfold. Treize and Quatre would be delivered to King Wufei; after
that the renegades could be taught a lesson.

So the quartet moved silently toward the Black Dragon's lair with
two Elven rulers as prisoners. None were certain Zechs' plan would
work. No matter what, the world was about to change. For better or
worse? They could only hope for the best, have faith in Zechs, and
wonder at his agenda. As for Zechs, the tall man kept silent.
Should anyone know what he was going to do, he would have a fight on
his hands.
