Dragon's Own by Phoenix

Part Three

Guilt. That's what is was. Guilt. And he had no business feeling it! Over a mortal? Ridiculous. Unthinkable. Folly! Yet, the unbearable truth.

Wufei was the Lord of the Black Dragons. The most feared creatures in all the world. His anger made even the elves shake. Unfortunately, Lord Wufei was a very honorable man. Quatre, Golden King of the Elves, had provided his people with the cure to a plague killing their children. Since then, the Dragons lived in the elf's debt. Until recently that is.

Quatre had sent his main advisor, Lady Une, to call on the Dragon Lord to clear what he owed. All the Dragons had to do was kidnap and break a mortal, making him undesirable to his lover. Easy. Mortals were considered to be beneath most of the long-lived creatures that ruled this world. Of course there was a catch.

The mortal was the lover of the self-exiled Treize; an elf of scrupulous honor and former ruler of a faction of the elven kingdom. Treize chose to live a simple life with the young human rather than rule without him. Only when Wufei met the slender mortal did the dark eyed dragon finally understand why, and that was his own bane.

Duo, the human's name, was beautiful; more so than any magical creature the King knew of. Worse, the boy had courage, strength, faith in his lover, and truly did love Treize. A love that would have been legendary if it were between two elves. Instead, between a mortal and an elf lord, it was considered disgusting.

But Wufei wanted his people free of their debt and so allowed Duo's torture. He and some of his men captured the longhaired human and defeated Treize, leaving the elf battered but not fatally so. The youth was then turned over to Une and her elfin companions.

Elves, disguised as members of the Black Dragon Clan, violated the human.

Repeatedly. Despite the monstrous act, all the mortal did was curse at them; he never begged for mercy. Even when his attackers resorted to simply inflicting pain, the youth did not change. Such strength gained him the respect of more than one true Dragon and the admiration of their Lord.

Chang Wufei would have gladly sent the mortal back to his wounded lover then; however, it would have left his clan in the debt of Quatre and after seeing the lengths the blond had ordered his people to go just to get his way, well Wufei no longer wanted to know the deceptive blond. So, taking the shame and dishonor on himself, the Lord drugged the boy with a very powerful draught; one that would bind Duo to him until death.

The result had been a sultry, erotic, addictive lover. Or rather one who could not help but respond whenever touched by Wufei; the potion ensured it. At those times he was everything the Dragon Lord wanted in a bedmate. The rest of the time, Duo hardly moved, never spoke, and was slowly wasting away. A shattered remnant of the once breathtaking mortal. Lady Une seemed pleased with the broken man; she left to report and cleared the Clan of its obligation.

The dragons could have killed Duo then. Yet, Wufei fast became addicted to the youth; the way he smelled after the servants bathed him, the sound of his voice raised in helpless, desperate passion, the feel of his silken hair and skin, the way he writhed against the immortal anxious to be impaled. Further, killing someone as brave and strong as the human offended every tradition and idea of honor the Clan held dear. So, the Lord kept Duo alive. A job becoming more difficult as time went on.

The youth appeared completely broken; eating only because a geis forced him to.

The rest of the time, the violet-eyed male stared out the window of his room or lay curled up in bed. He spoke to no one; the only time he did make noise was when Wufei used the bond created by the potion. Even then, the boy fought, clenching his lips until he could no longer contain his feelings.

So, the leader of the Black Dragon Clan, a warrior with no match, a King in his own right with a kingdom stretching across the sky, found himself falling in love with a creature who should have been beneath his notice. The thought of what he'd done to the lithe male ate at Wufei. At the same time, he couldn't bear to let his lover go. The thought of never seeing Duo again hurt.

It was ridiculous! How could he feel this way about a short lived mortal? How could his people accept such a pairing? They should have reacted as the elves did, showing disgust and scorn. Perhaps the difference lay in the fact the Clan witnessed their captive's true worth? Unlike the pointy-eared immortals, the Dragons found worth lay in a person's heart and soul, not their body.

Meirian, the mother of his children and chief advisor, told him the people approved of Duo as his bedmate and lover. Indeed, some expressed concern for the boy's continued health. Several Mind Healers offered to try and help the young captive come to terms with his new life. So it would be possible to keep the mortal, but a factor beyond Duo's mental and physical state complicated the matter. Something which revealed the depth of Quatre's ability to deceive and plot.

All good rulers spied on the courts of other realms and the dragon leader was no different. Although he only had one spy in the elven court, and the man's access was very limited, the plant sent worrying news to his leader. Treize, bearing bruises but almost fully healed, came before Quatre. The nobleman recounted the details of the attack and the kidnapping of his beloved.

King Winner looked suitable shocked and dismayed, made all the right statements before calling his cousin into a private council. Few knew what happened within the King's chambers, yet according to rumor, Treize agreed to return to his seat once Duo was rescued and the kidnappers brought to justice. This would mean the human's return without a chance of seeing Treize ever again. Such a thing certainly meant the youth's death.

Add to this the surety of an attack against his people and Meirian and Wufei were in awe of Quatre. In one move, the young blond guaranteed the return of his cousin, an end to Treize's affair with Duo, the destruction of said mortal, and the subjugation of his most powerful possible enemy. Not even the Black Dragons could stand against the might of the entire elven nation. Once a kingdom was defeated, ancient law dictated all survivors become property of the conqueror.

Essentially cannon fodder for their new Lord's future battles.

Chang Wufei, all his family, and supporters would be put to death.

Publicly.

None of the royal family could be allowed to live; it ensured a lack of legitimate attempts at rebellion or a way to rally the people. Quatre's plot was magnificent. Now the young dragon had to find a way to out think the devious elf and save his people.

Sighing, the beleaguered ruler turned from his desk toward his bed. The moonlight illuminated the sole figure on the huge mattress. A small whimper drew Wufei from his chair. Duo writhed in the grip of a terrible nightmare. His pale features twisted in fear and pain.

"Please, Treize," he gasped pitifully. "I didn't want to. I love you. Please."

"Hush, Little One," the dark eyed man soothed, running hand carefully though the mortal's hair.

Thanks to the connection caused by the potion, the simple contact eased Duo.

Murmuring softly, the human leaned into the touch. Wufei continued gently stroking the silken locks.

"I have made quite a mess of things," he whispered. "I only wanted to free my people and may have destroyed them instead."

Duo unconsciously began cuddling against the miserable man.

"I wish I could let you go, but I can't. Something about you has captured my very soul. But all I bring you is pain. I keep you from the one you love. Oh Duo, is there any way for this to end happily?"

Putting away his problems for tomorrow, Wufei hugged his lover close and fell into a troubled sleep.

A shadow in the farthest corner moved. Like living darkness it slid across the floor, coming to stand next to the bed.

"He cannot see the best way to undo this," a new voice rasped in the dark. Wufei shifted fitfully, but did not wake.

A second, smaller shadow joined the first. "Our King has too much honor to use us as more than bodyguards." The newcomer hissed.

"Perhaps we should take a tour of the country," the first shadow withdrew, moving to the window. In the moonlight, long, pale hair could be seen cascading down its back.

"I have always wanted to see the bedroom of the elven king," the smaller purred, following. For a second, dark hair hanging in a bang over half the creature's face could be seen.

"I promised to show you the world when we wed, my love. Shall we go?"

"How long will it take to shadow walk to his palace?"

"I don't know."

"Race you."

The shadows bulged and twisted near the open window before finally stilling. On the bed, two sleeping figures remained lost in dreams.
