He stared at the black ink that gleamed wetly on the paper-- a kind of old style calligraphy that seemed altogether too decadent for the plain, typed contents it held. It brought him back to a younger time-- when he was small, bright-eyed, tugging on the soft fabric of his father's pants leg for attention. Inhaling a sharp, unfamiliar scent that he would later know too well.
Blood.
Blood and the faint, acrid waft of gunpowder. He would notice his father's haggard eyes, the dark circles that shadowed their burning intensity; a lurking ferocity that belied his pacifist ideals. But perhaps that was that drove his father to seek refuge in a doctrine of nonviolence: the two weeks he spent on the L1 colony each year. The only replies to his family's inquiries was a brusque, "Business." Year after year, his papa looked more worn, eyes more haunted, taken to murmuring to himself in the half-darkness of his office, and clutching pacifism like a shield against a nightmare. The year before he'd left home, he'd watched his father stumble into their expansive home, unkempt, clothes in disarray-- he'd barely made it into his bedroom before he collapsed on the bed. He didn't move until late morning, and it was while he was still slumbering fitfully that he'd crept in, and examined the dark crimson blotches on what used to be a spotless, white collar.
Quatre never understood his father.
But hands touching the letter, he finally did.
