Spring After Colony 249
Eleven-year-old Adrienne Winner was hovering close to the tables where her
Aunt Nikki was holding baby Skye in hopes that her aunt would allow Adrienne
to hold the six-month old. Behind, the others were squealing and screeching
as they tried to catch the bunnies that Hisoka had accidentally let loose.
Uncle Dylan had caught two of the slippery soft furred rodents and was holding the pair carefully so four-year-old Angel and two-year-old Luke could pet them. The Fabulous Four (minus one because Tina's family insisted she spend the day with them) were shouting at each other trying to form a plan of attack, but Bryce and Hisoka kept running this way and that, messing up their strategy.
Dakota and Jasmine were sitting with Grampa Wufei, Grampa Quatre, and Grampa Heero. It seemed like all Dakota could ever talk about anymore was becoming a Preventers. She had a standing offer to join the Academy as long as she kept a clean record in high school these last two years and come June her two years were up. The same offer had been extended to Jasmine as well, but the younger girl didn't know yet if she wanted to accept.
Meiran had been offered the same admission into the Preventers, but she had chose to help Mommy with the Maxwell House Foundation, instead. Galen had already said he had no intentions of joining the Preventers regardless of whether he was asked or not, and Adrienne had the distinct impression that he would be asked. Probably the Lady would ask each one of her brothers and sisters to become Preventers, Adrienne included. She sincerely hoped that never happened because Adrienne had a slight problem around the Lady--the woman scared her practically to death for no practical reason!
"Okay, my little chick-a-de," Aunt Nikki grinned her way. "You want hands on my baby, don't cha?"
Adrienne grinned at her perceptive aunt. "Yes, please."
"Well, all right, but you keep far away from those hooligans you call brothers, deal?" the older woman grinned back, tucking an extra blanket around Skye's shoulders before handing her off to the waiting girl.
"Deal," Adrienne applied readily, arms twitching happily around her little cousin as she be-lined it for the table where her two sisters sat talking with her grandpas.
"There's been a lot of unrest in the Earth Sphere lately," Grampa Quatre was saying as she walked up and climbed into Otousan's lap. "The Preventers need all the help they can get right now."
"I am sure you will be an essential asset to their ranks," Grampa Wufei added with a wry smile. "With your knowledge and expertise."
"I'm really looking forward to it," Dakota grinned.
There was a flurry of shots as something small, black, and brown darted under the table, shortly followed by Hisoka who had managed to catch a rabbit by its foot, but his grip was quickly slipping. Grampa Trowa, who was also trying to help collect the renegade bunnies, knelt and picked the trembling creature up but the scruff of its neck.
"Come now, tiny one," he cooed, walking calmly back to the rabbit pen.
The remaining people at the table looked at each other, before shaking their heads and smiling.
"I should tell Abdul to stop sending these things every year," Quatre sighed.
"Nah," Heero replied. "It's fun having them around, and the kids like 'em."
Quatre forced a smile to his face. "Maybe, but they're annoying the hell out of me. Plus they stink."
The End
Some little notes: Yes, this fic took place six months before the attack on
PHQ that resulted in Lady Anne's, Sally's, and eventually Heero's death. It
is my suspicion that Heero's death is the main reason to spur Jasmine's
joining the Preventers.
Some will notice that despite Quatre's dislike of rabbits (and they really
do stink. Pretty, soft and cuddly, but stinky....) those bunnies are still
present down the road... Plus, it is my personal opinion that Quatre is so
annoyed with them because Trowa's cuddling and spending so much attention on
them!
