Heirs to the Legacy I by Andrea Readwolf

Part Three

Adrian went home that night and made straight for the kitchens. As expected, Maria was there working on a crossword puzzle.

"Six letter word for weapon of mass destruction..." the elder woman muttered under her breath.

"Gundam," Adrian answered, hopping up on a breakfast bar stool.

"Aiya! Bambino! You are-a giving me a heartattack, no?" the dark grey haired woman muttered getting up and squeezing his cheeks between the palms of her hands as she leand him over to receive a kiss from her. "You have a good time tonight, no?"

"Wonderful, Maria, but now I have a favor to ask of you."

"Anything for my Luci's boy! Name it and Maria will help," the proud woman proclaimed.

Adrian, still beaming like an idiot from earlier, leaned over the bar towards her. "I was hoping you'd say that. What I need is a very special picnic lunch-from tomorrow..."

Before he went to bed that night, Adrian took out the little blue velvet box his mother had given him on his sixteenth birthday. Carefully, he opened it and looked at what was inside, and, still grinning like an idiot, he closed it and placed it gentle on his nightstand.

His dreams that night revolved around some castle-manor he'd only seen from the outside on family trips to Sank-and a dark-haired, blue-eyed virgin princess who beckoned him inside.

"Trinity..."

"I wouldn't want to rule without a queen by my side," Adrian said, studying the blade of grass in his fingers.

"Oh, I'm sure there will be *hundreds* of women who would throw themselves at the feet of their king," Trinity laughed, rocking back and forth on the swing. "Why, as King, you could have any woman in the *world* that you wanted!"

Adrian Peacecraft rolled over onto his back and looked up at the girl he had known since his infancy. "What if I just want you?" he asked softly, studying her closely.

Trinity froze, her shoes scuffing in the grass as the swing came to a stop. Her face drained of color as she studied him back. "Don't even kid like that, Adrian. It's not funny."

He sat up, one arm crooked over a kneecap--he looked ready to spring into movement without notice, though he held perfectly still. "Who's kidding?" he asked, nervously wetting his lips. "Trinity Chang, if I was to accept this position... if I was to become King of Sank... would you be my queen?"

"I--"He wasn't joking she realized suddenly. All at once she felt tingly and alive. Shivers raced up and down her body, followed closely by bubbles of laughter. She fell off the wooden swing and into his lap, her arms moving naturally around his neck. "I would be your queen even if you were a King without a country, Adrian Peacecraft," she answered, following her promise with a kiss.

It was a picture of domestic bliss. Three middle-aged men and two teenagers, one male, one female, populated the room. The two younger bearing remarkable resemblance to the three older to the point that strangers would often wonder who was the father when the group was seen. These were strangers, though, of course. Friends and family knew that, in fact, all three men were the fathers-and, indeed, one was actually the "mother".

The caramel skinned man lounged in the large armchair near the many paned glass window, open book in lap as he read for the fifth or sixth time.

His daughter was curled up in the matching armchair set across from him; her large expressive dark blue-they-almost-looked-black eyes glued to the book in her own lap, which, she herself was reading for the third time. Her thick, ebony mane was pulled back into one long, loose, rope or a braid that coiled around her head like a living crown. Her smooth caramel skin was shades lighter than her father's, but still held the illusion of sun-kissed golden cream.

Also in the room were a large couch and a desk, which were occupied by the three remaining, present, family members. Duo Maxwell was plopped across the couch, grey-tinged braid thrown haphazardly behind him as he and his "baby", Dylan, tackled the dreaded entity known as homework; more specifically, Physics. Dylan didn't look much like his first father, but instead resembled his second father, Heero Yuy. From sole to crown, family members and friends would comment on how much of a spitting image he was of his father. Except... he wasn't. A paradox in motion.

Heero Yuy, for his part, was at his desk, at his computer, hacking-excuse me, typing away.

And, into this peaceful, domestic little scene, burst the sixth member of their little family.

"Guess what!" the dark-haired, violet-blue-eyed, young woman squealed as the door was practically flung from its hinges.

"Mr. Cringle had a heart attack and Physics has been canceled for the rest of the year?" Dylan asked, not bothering to look up from his book. Duo slapped him behind the head.

"Adrian finally asked you out on a date," Mara Jade's dry reply.

"No! Better!" Trinity Yuy-Maxwell Chang squealed with excitement before any of her fathers could offer up suggestions.

"Better than chocolate?" Duo looked over the back of the couch. Wufei and Heero both turned their attention away from their works.

"Better!" Trinity enthused. "Better than sex!" She stopped, still beaming. "Well, maybe not, but Just as Wonderful!!" She squeal again and held up her hand. "He asked me to marry him!"

All five heads snapped. "WHAT?!?!?!?!"

"Is that allowed?" Dylan asked, physic book sliding uncared for to the floor. "I mean, are you allowed to ask a girl to marry you before you even ask her out on a date?" Duo slapped the back of his head again.

"Shut up, dweep," Trinity replied, turning to Mara Jade who was out of her chair and grabbing at her displayed hand.

"Let me see!" Mara J squealed, scrambling out of her seat and to her older sister's side. "Oh my gosh! It's so beautiful!"

Trinity beamed. "It's an heirloom. Adrian's grandmother's!"

"Which side?" Duo asked, sharing a nervous look with his Chinese husband.

"Aunty Lu's," Trin replied off-handedly, turning her hand so the light would hit the crystallized rock and glitter.

"You're too young to get married."

Five head heads whipped around and stared incredulously at the 'head' of the family.

"You're only 20-years old," Heero stated.

"Which isn't *young* at *all*," Trinity returned, folding her arms in front of her.

"You're not ready for marriage," he said.

"You mean *you're* not ready," she quipped.

"I won't approve of this," he told her.

"You don't *have* to," she informed him. "It *might* have escaped your notice, but age of legality *is* 16, and I hit that mark quite a few years ago. *Legally*, I could have been married four years ago. After all," she turned away from him, sitting side ways on the end of the couch. "I'm four years older than you were when you married Daddy."

Heero scowled. "I don't like it."

"Stop griping, Daddy," Trinity smiled at him. "I'm going to marry Adrian Peacecraft and *you're* going to walk me down the aisle."

"Why's *he* get to give you away, sweet pea?" Duo pouted, dragging his daughter off the side of the couch and across his lap.

Trinity giggled. "Because! If he's not watched, he's liable to scare Adrian half-witless or start a fight with Uncle Zechs *before* the ceremony!"

"You say that like it's a bad thing," Wufei smirked.

"Daddy!!!"

"Hn. If he plans on being a leader of Sank, he should learn not to be intimidated by anymone," Heero growled.

Trinity gave her father a *look*. "I mean it, Daddy."

"So do I."

"So," Duo interjected. "When's this shin-dig supposed to take place?"

End Part 3

End Notes: I forget where I first heard "A six letter word for mass destruction--gundam"--a couple of years ago, I think, but it tended to stick inside my head. And... believe it or not, but this actually part has been written for over a year... ^__^;; I think I was in the middle of "In the Pale Moonlight" when this bit jumped out and demanded to be put to paper/document. More to come soon, and thanks to everyone who's been writting in, letting me know they like the read!
