At frist he wasn't going to go. He had a tough decision to make-one that not only effected his entire life, but the tyranny in the government.
It was Trinity-the shock, the hurt, the betrayal he saw in her face. The tears in her deep blue eyes.... Tears he was responsible for putting there.
He was late-by the time his driver dropped him off people were already leaving. Inside the darker main room his dark blue eyes scanned the writhing bodies out on the dance floor, irately brushing his dark bangs from his eyes.
"Dre!" Tristan called out, materializing at his side and latching onto his arm. "Where *have* you been? We asked Trin, but all she said was, she didn't think you'd be coming!"
"Tinity's here?" Adrian asked, grasping his friend's arm. "She hasn't left yet, has she?"
"Yeah, no, I mean, she's-" Tristan turned around, searching out the place he'd last seen his sister-cousin. "Um. I think she's in the washroom right now. She'll be out in a minute, though. Hey, is everything all right between you two?"
"Yeah. Fine," Adrian answered.
Tristan slapped Adrain's shoulder, flashing his friend a large grin before his eyes resumed scanning the crowd. "All right, man, I'll trust you to fix whatever it is that went wrong between you two, meanwhile, you'll excuse me if I leave you, right? I'd love to stay and chat, you know I really would, but there are some lovely ladies stil here who owe me a dance or three." And with a wink and a twirl, Tristan Winner disappeared into the whirling dancers.
The Peacefraft heir didn't try to follow him; instead he turned and headed in the direction Tristan had been looking for Trinity at. He'd made it three-quatres of the way there when the young woman he was looking for eased between two larger parties and into the dance room.
She must have seen him at the same moment he spotted her. They stopped-someone bumped into Adrian, absently excusing themselves. A trio of girl waltzed between them, briefly blocking their view of each other. Adrian moved first. Trinity followed, and they meet, standing three feet apart.
"I'm sorry-" "I need to-"
They both laughed, smiling. "You first," Adrian insisted. Trinity's head bobbed and her dark eyes darted to their feet before locking stoically with his.
"I'm sorry, Adrian," she repeated, more calmly this time. "I behaved horribly towards you yesterday and I apologize. You have a lot of things to deal with right now and my poor attitude shouldn't have to be one of them."
Adrian nodded, waiting for her to say anything else. He ached to reach out and touch her, to close the distance between them, end this formality that had suddenly sprung up between them like a wall. "Apology unnecessary, but accepted," he responded, wondering absently what it would be like to kiss her...
"There was something you wanted to say?" trinity prompted, her fingers fidgeting nervously with the silky cord of her purse.
Adrian's mouth opened to respond but words didn't immediately come. Instead, his eyes darted over across the dance floor where a blond maniac was eating up a lot of dance space. "Dance with me?" he asked. "Please?"
He held his hand out to her and offered a tentative bow. Her head inclined the slightest of acceptance and her hand slid into place, home within his.
They looked at one another.
Lips twitched with secretively shy smiles.
They moved like experts onto the dance floor-five years of shared dance lessons making them assured of themselves. Around them, people instinctively moving back to give them space.
~ I've got a funny feeling~
Adrian stared into Trinity's eyes; blue sapphire held fast to royal indigo. Her arms moved around his back and wrap behind his neck; his reciprocating the embrace. Unconscious of the moment when fancy-footwork gave way to a gentle side-to-side swaying.
~The moment that your lips touched mine~
She didn't know what possessed her-of their own accordance, Trinity's arms tightened around Adrian until he was close enough for her to tip her chin up, eyes falling shut, and gently touch his lips with hers.
Lips brushed. Carefully parted in a sweet, gentle, first kiss.
~Something shot right through me~
Trinity's soft body pressed against him; sweet adrenaline raced through him as he noticed for the first time just how soft she was in his arms... just how sweet her lips felt on his... And he reacted to that rush, kissing her in return.
~My heart skipped a beat in time~
Trinity's heart jumped in her chest with the thrill of excitement. She hadn't meant to---but, Adrian was kissing her *back*.
Arms tightened around her waist, crushing her into his hard body. She'd never realized just *how* hard before... and she didn't want him to stop.
~There's a different feel about you tonight
It's got me thinkin' lots of crazy things~
Her body relazed into his and it was like magically all the tension, and the strained events of these last few days were washed away. His arms moved down around her back, pulling her closer to him and all he could think about was how he never wanted to let go of this girl who was his best friend.
~I even think I saw a flash of light
It felt like electricity~
Her whole body was quivering. Distantly, the sound of cameras flashing could be barely heard or seen over the booming music and flashing strobe lights. Those things were details of a world that seemed far below her while Adrian's arms held her to him. She wrapped both arms around his neck, hanging to him tightly.
~You shouldn't kiss me like this
Unless you mean it like that~
"I don't ever want to fight with you again," Adrian cried, pulling away from her lips and pressing fervent kisses on her temple.
~Cause I'll just close my eyes
And I won't know where I'm at~
"Never," Trinity agreed, burying her hot face against his shoulder.
~We'll get lost on this dance floor
Spinnin' around And around
And around And around~
With a spurt of inarticulable joy, Adrian lifter her up against him and spun madly around with her, around and around and around, eliciting a yelp of laughter from the young woman in his arms.
~They're all watchin' us now
They think we're falling in love
They'd never believe we're just friends~
:: "Don't you get jealous when Makera hangs all over Adrian like that?"
"Why should I? She's making a fool of herself. Besides, it's not like Adrian's my boyfriend."
"Yeah. Right."
"No, really-we're just friends. We're not seeing each other or anything."
"Oh, so you two don't go to the movies together? Don't drink tea in the library or go to concerts on Saturday nights?"
"Well, yes, we do those things..."
"Then you're dating! Besides, you and Adrian look great together-you make the perfect pair. Everyone says so."
~When you kiss me like this
I think you mean it like that
If you do baby kiss me again~
"I don't want to let go," Trinity whispered against his chest.
"I don't want you to," Adrian's head ducked and suddenly they were kissing again.
~Everybody swears we make the perfect pair
But dancing is as far as it goes~
"I wish I had a boyfriend who would do things like that for me..."
"Get Adrian to do it."
"I know he would if I mentioned it to him, but it's not the same as having a boyfriend give you one."
"Girl, just face reality and admit you two make the perfect pair."
~Girl you've never moved me quite
The way you moved me tonight~
Adrian felt his guts twist and resettle. Why now? Why, after 20 years of living and breathing together, why did he have to fall in love with her now?
'You've always been in love, idiot,' his sister's voice scolded him. 'You just refused to admit it.'
But why now?
'Because I'm afraid to lose her.'
Adrian's arms squeezed Trinity closer again. She didn't protest.
~I just wanted you to know~
"Trinity, I-"
What if she didn't love him, too? He pulled back to look in her face. There were tears in her eyes, but a smile on her lips.
God, she was beautiful...
~I just wanted you to know~
"I love you," he finished.
She blinked more tears from her eyes and whispered, "I know," before leaning up to kiss him again.
~You shouldn't kiss me like this
Unless you mean it like that~
She smiled against his lips and replied, "I love you, too, Adrian Peacecraft. I always have."
~Cause I'll just close my eyes
And I won't know where I'm at~
Adrian laughed lightly, allowing himself to finally really let go of some of the pressure that had been placed heavily on his shoulders in the last three days. No. He let go of all of it. It was in sequential. His father was right. If he refused to return to Sank with the envoy than it would not be the end of the world. Sank would not crumble because he did not go back. The world would continue turning. Only losing Trinity could prevent that from continuing. For him-she was his life, his world, and wherever she was, that's where he wanted to be.
~We'll get lost on this dance floor
Spinnin' around And around
And around And around~
Trinity felt like she was a thousand feet up, dancing on clouds with the stars above her head so close she could just reach out and touch one. She didn't ever want to come down, either.
~They're all watchin' us now
They think we're falling in love
They'd never believe we're just friends~
:: "Man, you are so lucky to have a great girlfriend like Chang."
"Trinity's not my girlfriend; she's just my best friend."
"Yeah, right, Peacecraft. The whole *country* knows you and trinity Chang are an item."
"Honestly, we're not."
"Yeah? So, you're *not* taking her to the dance next month, then?"
"I'm escorting her; there's a difference."
"Uh huh. Sure. Keep telling yourself that, buddy. One day someone will knock some sense into ya, though."
~When you kiss me like this
I think you mean it like that
If you do baby kiss me again~
There was just something addicting about her kisses-Adrian couldn't get enough. Around them, the dance floor was emptying.
"Will you meet me tomorrow? In the meadow?"
Trinity, still smiling her beautiful smile, nodded. "What time?"
"Noon?"
"I'll be there," she promised.
"Good." He squeezed her hands before lifting them to his lips. "Until then. Love you."
And suddenly Trinity was standing alone, on an empty dance floor, watching as he hurried out the double doors.
~Kiss me again~
Trinity touched her fingers to her lips, delicately running the tips over her tingling ruddy lips as her mind tried to process what had happened tonight.
There was a movement near her and Trinity looked up to see the twins approaching her, each wearing an identically grin.
"Ready to go, Trini?" Triton asked.
She looked at him, and then his brother. She smiled back at them. Tristan winked at her and her shoulders shook with a laugh. Three pairs of blue eyes twinkled with happiness. "Yeah, let's go home," she said, taking each by the arm, hooking hers through theirs. "Thanks for waiting for me."
Tristan grinned and pulled her against his side, wrapping his arm around her waist. "No prob," he answered as they walked out to the waiting car. "Now, do tell what's going on between you and our dear M. Peacecraft..."
