Original Characters, including but not limited too, the Berh Siblings, Jake Mazzolla and "the chibis", are original and hence, the author's own creation.
Notes: This is the story of the children, the nine children of the 6 gundam pilots (Heero--Zechs) plus the grandchild of Treize Khushrenada. This story will not focus primarily on the characters from the series, but rather, the generation after them. This story is not for all die-hard fans, but runs along the lines of a more original piece.
Additional Note: 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5 often times refer to each other as "husband"; please refer back to "Promise of the Rings" Part 15 if this causes confusion.
Additional Note 2: The chibis often times refer to their parents' friends and partners as "Uncle" or "Aunt"--in this case, the term is used simply as one of respect since, with the exception of Kit & Adrian's relation to Relena and all of Quatre's sisters, none of the parents have siblings.

Heirs to the Legacy I by Andrea Readwolf

Part Seventeen

~ September AC 227~

Mara Jade listened to what the doctor had to say, all the while her blood roaring in her ears, making the woman sound far away. At the end, she stood, licking her dry lips, and thanked the other woman kindly for her help and, no, no, it was all right, she could see herself home without assistance. Sally had insisted on walking her to her car, and, once there, hugged Mara Jade tight and told her it would be okay, reminding her to take a pill a day.

Mara Jade sat in the car for a moment and just stared at the pamphlets the lady doctor had pressed upon her. Then, in a stunned daze, she started the car and drove home. She told her father she wasn't feeling very good. All she wanted to do was go up to her room, crawl into bed, and curl up into a good tight ball and cry.

Her fathers were worried about her, she knew. It was unlike her to be sick. Moody, yes, but never to the point of making herself sick.

She spread the pamphlets out around her on the bed, looking at the covers and titles. The letters swam before her watery eyes. She gave up trying to read them, her heart, head, and stomach hurting too much, and fitfully, she finally fell asleep.

***

Heero was traveling with Quatre and Trowa, inspecting WEI systems management and security in the colonies. Trinity had left this afternoon to go to Sanc for the weekend. Dylan was out somewhere with Mariemeia's son, Julian. That left just himself, Duo, and Mara Jade for dinner. Normally, Wufei would have loved the opportunity to have a quiet meal alone with one or both of his husbands, but with Heero having been away for two weeks already, and Trinity nearing the date she would leave home permanently, Wufei was feeling a bit clingy to his family.

So, as Duo was setting the table for three, Wufei sighed and climbed the stairs to go bring Mara Jade down-even if she still wasn't very hungry it would be nice to have her company, their little girl. She didn't answer, so he quietly opened the door to check on her-he hoped she wasn't running a fever. Maybe he should call Sally and ask the woman doctor to come by and take a look at his baby girl.

Her face was splotchy from crying. Gently, Wufei fingered her dark hair away from that face. She was so pretty, like a delicate blossom, he thought. His pride and joy. Yes, Wufei loved all his children, but Mara Jade was his pet. His strong, beautiful baby girl..

Dark eyes flitted to one of the many pamphlets on the bed next to her. He thought to straighten them up and leave them on her nightstand, and he began to reach for one when the words on the front registered in his mind: When Is Abortion the Right Answer?

"What is this?" he asked hoarsely, reaching for the one under it. 'A Woman' s Body and Pregnancy' and under that, 'Ten Steps to a Healthy Baby', and 'ADOPTION, There IS an Alternative to ABORTION.' "What IS this?" he asked more loudly.

On the bed, Mara Jade stirred, mumbling something. "What is this?" Wufei was shouting now, pulling the girl into full consciousness.

"Don't yell, Daddy, I have a headache," the girl mumbled, curling more on the bed and fisting the sleep from her eyes.

"What is this about, Mara Jade?" Wufei demanded sharply. "I want an answer now! Why do you have these-these-THIS!"

Blue-violet eyes blinked blearily at him, and she looked confused by the question until she realized what he was holding. Then her jaw hung and her eyes widened. She lunged over the bed to snatch the pamphlets back. "Gimme those!"

Wufei grabbed her wrist with his free hand, pulling her up and away. She tried to block his block and still grab at the pamphlets with her other hand-which didn't go so well. Mara Jade ended up falling off the bed, banging her knee on the nightstand and her elbow on the floor. Beautiful. Just fucking perfect.

"What's going on in here?" Hanging in the bedroom door, Duo looked from his husband-who looked ready to pop a blood vessel-to his daughter in a heap on the floor.

"Nothing," Mara Jade said quickly, standing up and brushing herself off, all the while glaring daggers at Wufei.

Looking straight at her, Wufei held the pamphlets out to Duo. "Your daughter was reading these."

One eyebrow rose questioningly. First looking at Wufei and then Mara Jade, Duo took the offered papers. 'Your daughter'. Uh oh, Wu-babe wasn't very happy. Duo wondered what his daughter could possibly have done to piss his husband off so badly. And then he looked at what he held in his hand.

The silence was enough to kill. Violet eyes looked up, and Mara Jade experienced a flash of fear. Wufei's temper everyone was used to; Duo's anger.. That was dangerous.

"Mind telling me who these are for, Jade?" Duo's voice asked with deceptive calm.

The girl refused to answer, her voice remaining stubbornly lodged in her throat. Instead, she glared back at him.

The papers crumpled agonizingly in Duo's fist. "Who?" he bit out, the tilt of his jaw down so those violet eyes glared out behind bangs announced a danger that had just turned deadly. When the girl still did not answer he rushed her, grabbing her by the shirt and arm, shaking her. "Who is he? Who the hell did this to you?!"

Mara Jade cried out, completely frightened and annoyed as hell by that fear. She latched on precariously to that annoyance and her anger and brought it to her defense. "I did it!" she shouted, mindless to the fact she'd started crying. "I did it to myself! I went screwing around!" She broke Duo's hold, not realizing Wufei had helped free her from her other father. "Sorry, I'm not like you," she spat, still glaring through her tears. "I didn't go in to a scientist one day and say, 'Hey, make me a baby.' I screwed around and I got pregnant. The regular, old fashion way!"

"Who is he?" Duo repeated, his voice low and threatening. He didn't try to fight Wufei holding him back.

"It doesn't matter," their daughter said, sitting dejectedly on the bed, snuffling and wiping her running nose with her hand.

"Like hell it doesn't!"

"It doesn't!" she insisted, not looking at them.

"Fine." Duo jerked free of Wufei's hold, but instead of heading towards the bed he went for the door. "I'll find out myself."

The door slammed; heavy footsteps pounded down the steps; there was the angry banging of the kitchen cabinets; the back door slammed; and then the angry roar of Duo's old black jeep, tearing down the drive.

For the longest moment, neither father nor daughter moved. Mara Jade sat, shivering on the bed, sniffling pitifully, trying desperately to stop crying. Wufei stared at her; shocked at his husband's behavior. Finally, as the sounds of the jeep faded away, Wufei moved to her side, gently, tentatively touching her shoulder. He winced when she flinched away.

"Are you all right?" he asked with as much calm as he could muster.

"NO!" she shouted, glaring up at him. "I'm PREGNANT!" She cried with frustration, grounding the heels of her palms into her forehead and trying to regulate her breathing. "Please, just. just. go away," she said finally. "I just need. some time alone. Please."

He felt helpless, hopeless. He wanted to hold her, hug her, and tell her everything was going to be all right. But he didn't. He obeyed her wishes and left her alone. Downstairs, he put in a call for Heero. He needed some guidance in this situation.
