Additional Note 2: The chibis often times refer to their parents' friends and partners as "Uncle" or "Aunt"--in this case, the term is used simply as one of respect since, with the exception of Kit & Adrian's relation to Relena and all of Quatre's sisters, none of the parents have siblings.

Heirs to the Legacy I by Andrea Readwolf

Part Sixteen

~August 227AC~

Life was great.

With four months to go to the wedding, everything was running smoothly. After months of deliberation, a gown was finally decided about. The bridesmaids' dresses were still in an either or status. The groomsmen's ceremonial suits were fashioned and already in production. All confirmations were in as far as music, vid recordings, photographer, the church, the banquet, the flowers, and, of course, the palace.

With Mara Jade helping her sister out by handling the Maxwell House Association's account book, Trinity was able to spend more time in Sanc, helping Adrian, meeting with Renfeild, and becoming all the more acquainted with the country she would rule over. As the summer stalled and the University revved up for a new semester, returning students shifted gears and new students dealt with fear and excitement, eager for classes to begin and the semester to end. Among the returning students were Tristan, Mara Jade, her brother Dylan, and Tristan's sister Calista-but only for a few classes, the blonde girl insisted. She'd be spending most of her time at Winner Enterprises, prepping the staff for her eventual take-over. New to the University scene was Julian Mazzolla.

Jules, as family and close friends were often to call him, was the grandson of Treize Khushrenada-a fact known by few, unknown even to himself. To the small group of siblings and friends, the ginger-haired boy was simply the son of "Aunt" Marie and "Uncle" Jake. Vaguely, the troupe knew that Marie was "Aunt" Anne's adoptive daughter; just as they knew Jake was a filter-out from Maxwell House who had stayed with their fathers for a bit of time before/during/after Trinity was born. But all that was ages ago.

What really mattered to the group was that Julian Mazzolla was "family"-the adoptive kind you got to choose. He was like a distant cousin who you sometimes got to see on the holidays, sometimes didn't. He was one of them, and they accepted him readily. He joined them on outings and innings, sat with them at lunch, and just overall hung out with their troupe. At the end of the day he would make his way back to Bridgelight, alone or sometimes with Kit.

Living with his godfather, sleeping in the room that had once been Adrian's, was interesting. He had visited Bridgelight before in years past, but the house had always seemed like a hotel to the small boy from Mars. Now he was actually living there, his parents back on Mars, trillions of miles away. Many nights it was just Julian and Zechs, alone in the big house. Kit found more reasons not to come home as the summer progressed, and Aunt Lu had taken Nicole to Old Italy to stay with her grandparents.

Still, despite some of the uncomfortable ness of living in someone else's home, of living on a planet he'd only ever visited before, Julian soon relaxed and allowed himself to fit in easily with the others.

That was, until the night he accidentally came across Tristan and Mara Jade, in the west library, in very compromising positions.

They were too far-gone into each other to notice the surprised gasp and the quick clap of the door shutting. Laid back over the study desk, her legs wrapped around Tristan's shoulders and neck as he thrust into her again and again. A couple minutes later when their blood had slowed down and returned to normal proportions, when they had readjusted their school uniforms and plastered neutral expressions on their face. they realized the door had remained unlocked.

"It doesn't mean anything," Tristan whispered, trying to convince the dark-haired.

She stopped outside the library and turned on him. "Maybe you don't care about your reputation but I care about mine," she hissed.

"What's the matter, Mara Jade? Worried that the evening news will announce to Daddy-kins that their baby girl is getting fucked and loving it?"

<<SMACK>>

His arms stayed at his side as he stared at her, breathing heavily, her face infused with an angry blush, consequently, matching the small handprint now etched along his cheek. Tristan stepped closer, looking hard down into her eyes. "Going to hit me again, Mara Jade? I bet that will look real good on the news."

She almost did, her hand flying for his face-but stopped inches away, struggling against his grip. "That wasn't a suggestion," he whispered, stepping into her, using his grip on her wrist to hold her against him. "When are you going to stop hiding, Mara Jade, and admit that we have something going on here?"

"Quite deluding yourself, Tristan," she whispered, her voice hoarse with emotion. "The only relationship we have going here is one of friends with benefits."

"You love me," he insisted.

"You're annoying."

He brushed their hips together. "You love the way I feel inside you."

"The sex is good," she allowed.

"You want me."

He tried to brush their lips together but she ducked away, saying, "To leave me alone."

He let go of her then and stepped away. "Okay, fine." His face looked impassive as he slid his hands into his pockets. "If that's the way you want it, fine. I'm tired of trying to get you to admit what you already know." He shrugged. "When you're ready to admit that you love me just as much as I love you, you know where to find me."

He pulled his sunglasses out and turned to leave, offering a wave goodbye over his shoulder and these parting words: "I'll leave you alone and wait for you to get your act together. Just don't make me wait forever."

Mara Jade watched him leave her in the busy court, with students bustling in and out of the library behind her, her stomach rolling dangerously. When he 'd disappeared from sight, her stomach rebelled and she darted for the nearest rubbish bin and upended her lunch.

Mara Jade was sick all that afternoon and the next day, too. By the fourth day she was entirely fed up-never having suffered more than a runny nose or headache in her entire young life thanks to her genetic makeup, having to deal with a rebellious stomach now was just unfair.

She made the call herself, not wanting to worry her fathers or siblings, and arranged to meet with Dr. Po the next afternoon. After class that Friday, instead of heading over to the diner with the others like she had been doing since summer, Mara Jade heading downtown to Preventer Headquarters. She smiled pleasantly to the people behind the security desk-Officers Delaney and Walker-and scooted up through the building until she reached her godmother's office.

"Come in?" Sally Po's voice called out. "Oh, Mara Jade, that's right. I'm sorry; I completely forgot you were coming over this afternoon. I would have met you down in the lobby."

"That's all right," the young one-third Chinese girl replied. "It's not like I haven't been here a million times before."

Sally smiled back at Mara Jade and wrapped an arm around the girl's waist as they headed down towards the medical wing of the building. "Yes, I seem to remember someone who looked a strikingly lot like you running around this place several years back. I wonder whatever happened to that child."

Mara Jade laughed with the older woman. She had many a fond memories of visiting this building with her fathers when she and her siblings were young.

"Now, you said last night that you haven't been feeling well?" Sally asked, cutting into Mara Jade's memories. "What seems to be the problem?"

The dark-haired girl listed off the few symptoms she'd been experiencing recently and the grey-haired woman listened attentively and nodded. "Well, tell you what. Why don't we run a few tests and see what bug's been silly enough to try crawling up into your system. Sound good?"

Mara Jade smiled and nodded, determined not to let her suddenly weak stomach get the better of her.

An hour later, she was waiting back up in Sally Po's office for the doctor to come back with her results. The door opened and Mara Jade was on her feet looking to the other woman-and she swallowed hard, her heart squeezing to a painful halt before racing forward.

"Let's talk," Sally Po said gravely.

End Part 16

MARA JADE: I have a really bad feeling about this...
TRINITY: I have my wedding dress? Really? Which one did we decide upon? Wow, I'm so glad this wedding's coming together--it's really nerve racking trying to put together a royal wedding.
ANDREA: !__! Tell me about it!
MARA JADE: Am I the only one worried here?
JULIAN: No, I'm worried, too. My eyes may never recover...
MARA JADE: *>.<
JULIAN: Eep!
