I have NO idea where this came from. Basically, I sat at my computer and waxed philosophical about kids. This is the result. Kinda weird little one-sided conversation Duo has with well, you'll see. Unbeta'd and all mistakes are mine.

I've always wanted a child.
Don't laugh at me! Don't you DARE laugh at me! I'm serious! Well, this is the last time I talk to *you* about anything important! Insensitive JERK!!
Fine, fine, I'll calm down. But I still got a right to be pissed. I am not touchy! You wanna know why I'm so hostile about this? I'll tell you.
I truly believe that kids are gifts from God. Don't look at me like that! They are! Kids are the most precious thing you can ever get in this life, almost as good as a soulmate. Better then an experienced lover, sweeter then the richest pastry, holier then the Vatican, more pure then 24 karat gold, worth more then the entire World Bank. Why? What do you mean 'WHY'?!
Because as stupid and clichéd as it sounds, children are the future.
After all, weren't we?
Think about it, man. We were only 15 and we changed *everything*. We saved the damned world and brought peace, just the five of us! OK, so we were an extreme case, but never underestimate the power of youth. There's something about the young that gives them the priceless ability to change and adapt. As you get older, you get stuck. Stuck in a rut, in a mindset, in a lifestyle you may or may not want. But as the years fly by, it gets harder and harder to escape until one day you realize you'll never scale the wall and break out.
I really think a lot of the problems in the world are caused by frustrations like this. People see what they aren't and what they could have had or been and they can't stand it. Wars have been started over less, even if they don't what to acknowledge why
But kids kids are honest. If you're being an ass, they let you know. People talk about their naivety but maybe the reason why everything's so black and white to them is that there aren't as many shades of grey as we'd like to believe. So many things are subject to relative morality. You'd know something about this, doing what you do and all. It's OK to do it as long as you don't get caught. People think nothing of behaviors they'd be mortified if it went public. As long as no one see, you're good, right? But how many of your daily rituals would you change if you had a young audience watching? Innocent habits or otherwise? You consciously or unconsciously clean up your act: the language, the bad habits, white lies and the like start to disappear and all sorts of little things change. Children have a civilizing effect on society.
Kids make you look at things. And really *look*. Something as mundane as a mud puddle becomes a treasure trove of fun to a little one. Age makes you lose the sight God intended us to have. We stop seeing the good and start focusing on the bad. I remember how hassled Father and Sister Helen would be, running around trying to keep us all alive. They'd be so tired and to be honest, down right bitchy sometimes. But if you brought them a flower you found out in the yard, or a piece of plastic you somehow shaped into a reasonable facsimile of a bird, their eyes it was like they never saw anything like it before. And they hadn't. It took a child to show them the truth.
And a child shall lead the way
No, I don't remember where that's from. Just 'cause I can't cite it don't make it any less relevant. And I don't wanna know that you know the source, either. Smartass. Now where was I
I want a kid because they complete you. Not spiritually or anything like that, but they bring things full-circle. Your whole life is suddenly subject to them. You come when they need you, you comfort them when they fall, smack 'em when they're stupid and cry when they finally succeed. You do what was done for you and gain the knowledge that seemed to make the big people so smart when you were young. You get to be the protector, the nurturer, the worrier, the warden, the role model. You take a vulnerable life and prepare it for the world. It's a big job and one's that's so easy to screw up. But it's worth it, ya know? It has to be or people would never have started care for their young in antiquity. We'd have just left them to fend for their own like some animals do. But not only do we keep them, we keep them around for almost twenty years! They can take care of themselves long before that. I'm livin' proof. There's got to be something there to keep a child that close to you for so long.
I know what you're thinkin'. What do people do who never had parents?
Good question.
I'll do the best I can. Correction, *we'll* do the best we can. You know damn well if I bring a kid home, the next morning I'll find Quatre and the Magaunacs at my door bearing gifts, ready to coo, cuddle and spoil the hell out of 'em. Trowa'll show up with Cathy's homemade soup and a few assorted animals so the little one won't be scared of them when we visit him at the circus. If it's a girl, you can be sure Wufei will be here to rant about it. And while he's yelling, he'll be teaching the kid katas or maybe some obscure history he thinks I'm too dumb to pass along correctly. And Heero? He'll either decide the kid's his latest mission and go from there or he'll insist on making sure I don't kill them accidentally and take over. Either way, he's definitely in.
If and when I adopt, that lucky little sucker is gonna have the best family EVER! Since the five of us never had a normal childhood, the fortunate child will be insured one. We kinda drifted apart after the war. We kept in touch, we still visit and some of us still spend the night together if you know what I mean. But in the end, we've become long-distance friends. The second they hear about my plans, they'll come back and they'll never leave. They may not admit it, but they understand how precious children are, too. But none of them has the courage to adopt right now or maybe ever. They're afraid of contaminating the kid, ruining their innocent just by association. Morons. Don't they get it? It's the other way around. You become more innocent, more pure by spending time with them and learning from them. Children are there to help you as you help them.
But the most important reason why I want a child is they love. They love with all their hearts and with that love comes peace and healing. I want to heal. I NEED to heal. I'm doing alright but there are things that still I was a child who never got to be one. That's got to be one of the saddest damn things on the face of the planet. Childhood is priceless; to waste it is a grievous sin in any religion or philosophy. I'd do anything to get it back, to do it again Shoulda, woulda, coulda. The song of life. The present generation must suffer the mistakes of their fathers, live with their own and try desperately to stop the next from repeating the cycle. It blows but it's always been that way. At least, if you have a kid, you can have a hand in making sure at least one life will be better for it.
A child's love is the stuff of legends. Ghosts stories say that the darkness can't touch them, take them, harm them. Proverbs say the gods protect them and reality bears that out. They shine in every new parent's eyes and give life to an older person's days. Children are jewels beyond worth and to have one in your life is one of the great blessings Heaven allows.
What do you mean, 'I make a strange philosopher'! I'll have you know I'm not just any baka! I've done research on this, you know! How else could I get past the adoption board's inspection?
Yes, I'm serious Relena. I'm going to have a child. Maybe not mine by blood, but mine in heart. And maybe someday there will be more then one. I have seen the joy they bring and the happiness they create. I want to be a part of that. Now will you sign the damn paper already?! You're my last reference!
The board says I'll be on the list. I don't have a preference so whatever comes my way I'm gonna trust Fate. I'm doing a good thing and I have to have faith that it will work out. I always was the optimist.
Thanks. This means a lot to me. I didn't think you'd help What do you mean I have to name them after you?! What if they're already named?! There's no such name as 'Peacecraftina'!
OK, sorry, I didn't get the joke. I'm kinda high-strung here. I know for a fact that Heero knows I'm here and he's gonna be nosey as all hell about it. Do me a favor and run interference? Long enough for me to get this to the agency? He might try to stop me and have me committed or something
I really mean it. Thanks. This child will be will be a very important part of my life. I'll make sure that they'll never want for anything or be sad if I can help it. Kids really are a gift from God. I want to enjoy the present I was given.
