Sight was easily established, with all available targets. It was obvious, though, that they were painfully short of all probables, gaping holes in their information, or technology, or reach. It didn't matter what the problem was, only that as long as it existed, their chances of finding the pair that could save them were that much slimmer.
Their small sphere of control was diminished almost daily, the invaders hammering at them with more than they'd even be able to repel. The foreign technology was more than unequaled, and their resistance depended entirely upon booby traps, sacrifices, and whenever the invaders felt like resting.
So the search began. The breakthrough in technology couldn't have come at a more perfect time, enabling them to enlist the outside help that was so necessary. Of course, there was no guarantee of it functioning, but it was really the small rebellion's only chance left. The amount of effort and resources required was enormous, though many more than expected were willing to give something up for the chance of survival and the banishment of the Gresh and the Mechanical Attack Vehicles, or MAVs as they were known in shorthand.
In the end, even with all the generous donations, they only had funding for five. Five of the hundreds discovered from millions. After relentless debate over the choices, the decision was finally handed over to the two scientists in change of the project, one Due Marcel and his reputed lover, Kyouji Yuuki.[1] Their verdict was pronounced almost immediately, as if they'd been anticipating the task all along.
And so, the ultra sophisticated probes, along with the transporting equipment needed should the two be found, were sent immediately to their ports of choice. And their creators watched the transmission regularly, searching desperately for the slightest sign of one with the ability to save their dying society.
And then, almost unexpectedly, two were.
Nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing... With a cold feeling a failure, he wondered if maybe he and Due had been wrong in their choices, after all. While the fifth probe had yet to establish contact, the first found were obvious dead ends. Oh, the targets were intelligent enough, with the predicted skills in the predicted fields, but none were really more than that, possessing the same sort of genius as he or Due. While each pair had their individual quirks and talents, none were what they needed so gravely.
His depression was stalled by the abrupt addition of a fifth tone, signifying appropriation of the fifth pair. Nervously he brought the image online, though the 3-D representation was somewhat grainy, due to the supernatural spaces crossed. It was nothing sort of amazing that this had been managed in the first place, he would never gripe about static.
The most noticeable presence in the small cube was the explosions. Fire ripped through the calm black of space, obscuring the unfamiliar constellations. It wasn't immediately apparent what the cause was, until a smaller blossom of flame that left part of its fuel unburned caught his eyes. Attention thus caught, he zoomed in on the burning object.
He was unable to stifle the swift shot of fear that shot though him at first glance. It appeared to be a MAV! Before he could wander how their attackers crossed the same space they had just now endeavored to, he noticed the differences. Oh, it was a humanoid mecha, to be sure, but not one of a structure he recognized, the technology appeared to be only remotely similar.
He jerked back in shock as another shot caught it in a vital area and the whole thing exploded. Heart quickening in hope, he zoomed back out, hoping to catch a glimpse of whatever had destroyed the robots that were so invincible to his people.
He hadn't thought it possible to be even more amazed than he already was, but his breath caught at what greeted him. The size of several of the destroyed mecha, it was heavily armored and equally heavily armed. As he gaped, it moved, the reflections of the sun, stars, and many blasts rippling across its quite exterior. it was the most formidable thing he'd ever seen, and he knew at once that they needed it.
"Due!" he called, hoping his partner was still within hearing distance. At no immediate reply, he raised his voice and repeated, "Due!"
His violet eyed coworker raced in, eyes frantic. "Is something wrong?" he asked in an almost panicked voice.
He didn't reply, just draped an arm over Due's shoulder and guided him over to the ever shifting 3-D sending.
Due seemed confused for a moment, doubtless as accustomed as he was to the nothing they'd discovered to far. Until a black shadow darkened the screen, capturing the attention of both. They stared as another machine, comparable to the first but different enough to be obviously identifiable, swept across the view of the probe. Just as dangerous as the first appeared, but in a black hue that seemed to eclipse all around it, with glowing green eyes that were more than a little chilling.
"Kyouji..." Due whispered, turning to face him with a slight swish of golden brown hair, deep indigo eyes shining.
"We did it," Kyouji finished, nodded his dark-crowned head.
"We really did it!" Due reiterated, voice exhilarated. "We really..." Suddenly he was laughing, throwing his arms around his blue-eyed partner, letting him swing both around in sudden, unexpected joy.
It seemed Due couldn't stop smiling, even after he reestablished contact with the floor. He was unusually bouncy, switching his glance from Kyouji to the viewscreen to various other machines and back again.
"Do you wanna..." he whispered, one hand lifting in an almost ghostly half-gesture.
Kyouji shook his head. "You do it," he said with a smile.
Once again his partner graced him with an answering grin, before his half-lifted arm completes its aborted movement, setting off alarms throughout the base as they prepared to do what had never actually been accomplished before...
End Prologue
Note:
[1] I came up with the names... Due is Italian, and is pronounced like 'do-ay' As in 'I wanna do more! (background singers:) Do more! Do more!' Dancing wands optional. ^^
