Sons Of The Ocean by Phoenix

Part One

Once upon a time there was a kingdom far, far away. It was ruled by a good and wise king named Treize. His wife, Lady Une, was also wise, but very gentle. The people loved their rulers and for a long time all was well in the land. However, one year an unusually harsh winter plagued the country and spring was late in coming.

For weeks, the King waited for the spring to come. Yet it did not. Soon all the winter provisions would be gone and his people would starve. In desperation, he called all his lords and generals together. Perhaps they could find away to keep his country from dying.

For days the men argued amongst themselves; each coming up with different ideas and plans and insisting everyone follow them. Lords J, G, S, O, and H all felt that the people should pray to the Gods harder and offer what little food they had left to the deities. Generals Zechs, Alex, and Mueller wanted to invade nearby countries and steal what they needed. Finally, a soft, but strong voice interrupted the yelling.

"Why not use the millstones?"

All talking stopped. Long ago a God had visited the kingdom in its time of need and left them two magic millstones. If the people could get them to turn, whatever they wished for would come forth. So the legend said. The stones now sat unused and forgotten in the Right Tower basement. The men all knew the tale, but could it really help them? Turning as one, the group faced the speaker.

The one who spoke of the legend was a young, foreign scholar who had been shipwrecked years ago. Wufei, the young man, learned their customs, language, and legends quickly and was respected as an honorable guest. Over the years, he supplied the voice of reason to the King's court, solving problems with his knowledge and quick wit. If this man was suggesting the stones, they should all listen.

"How do you know it will work," Alex demanded.

"What have we to lose but a few hours?" Wufei replied with a calm shrug.

Together, the men walked to the tower and found the heavy stones propped against the wall. It took all of them to move one stone to the middle of the large room. Finally, two hours later, the stones were set and a handle was brought to turn them. With muscles bulging, King Treize tired to turn the stones.

Nothing happened. Calling to all the men assembled, he ordered them to help. Once again, pressure was put to the handle and this time the stones turned, just a little.

"Food for my people," Treize shouted when he felt the stone slip. His joy was short lived, however, as the millstones only made a quarter turn. The men strained even harder, but could not again move the stones. They stepped back ready to turn on Wufei and take their frustrations on the young man when they noticed a small pile of vegetables surrounding their feet.

"It works," Zechs gasped.

Wufei simply smiled.

"But we are not strong enough to move the stones again," J pointed out.

"We should pray to the God of the Sea for strength," G said. "All know there is no force in the world that can resist the power of the tide or waves. Perhaps he will lend us that strength."

Deciding to follow the old man's advice, the men once more traveled as a group, but this time to the seashore. Treize waded slowly out into the waves and shouted his pray to the waves. For long moments the men waited to feel extra strength flowing through them. Nothing happened.

Defeated, Treize turned back to shore; just as he reached his men, a strong wind almost knocked them off their feet. A roar came from the ocean as the waves pulled far back and then reared like a wild animal. Yells of fear filled the air. It looked as if the entire village would be swept away by the angry sea. Then, just as the wave began to crest, it paused.

Slowly, like molasses, the water began to recede; left along the shore were two young men dressed in white. One had violet eyes and long chestnut hair. The other, blond hair and sky blue eyes. They stood confident and proud before the assembled King, fighters, and advisors.

"We are the sons of the Ocean God," the blond said softly. "You may call me Quatre." He gestured to his brother. "This is Duo. Our father sent us to help."
