08-Dec-1999 My muse is still out but I wrote this songfic. It has spoilers for the fic, but some people wanted to know and it is unfair to make them wait while my muse gets itself back together. Anyway, please enjoy the songfic. Please let me know what you think. I don’t own the GW guys. I’m poor. Very much so. This is a song fic based on the song below. It is about the lives of the pilots’ kids and has one major spoiler for the "Next Generation" series I am writing. What do you say by Reba McEntire Songfic by Phoenix Stuck at a red light outside an adult bookstore Trowa pulls up to a stoplight. Next to him is Dason, about seven years old. Trowa looks unhappy. This part of town has really gotten bad in the last few years. All the doors in the car are locked. Not sensing his father’s anxiety, young Dason is peering around with the innocent enthusiasm only children have. His young eyes light up as he finds something interesting. Turning to Trowa, His son said "Daddy, what are all those X’s for" Trowa looks at his son with wide eyes and then sees where the boy is pointing. Without realizing it, he had stopped in front of several adult stores. As the light turned green he changed the subject fast Trowa hits the gas a little too fast and the car streaks away. He changes the subject to Dason’s older brother. He started talkin’ about football as they drove right past Trowa brings up Trey’s football game. It is going to be that weekend. Dason quickly forgets his question and Trowa breath’s a sigh of relief. What do you say in a moment like this Trowa looks into the rearview mirror and then back to his son. Dason has forgotten about the stores, but some day, Trowa will have to explain them to his son. When you can’t find the words to tell is like it is What is he going to tell Dason then? How will he explain to his gentle son that side of people? Just bite your tongue and let your heart lead the way With a sigh, Trowa decides to cross that bridge when they come to it. Let’s get out of here The stores fade into the distance, as the pair speed into the horizon. Oh what do you say Silence reigns in the car. Seventeen years old she was with her friends Merian is out with her friends. They arrive at a house where a party is obviously going on. Merian looks unsure, but her friends grab her arms, and laughing, pull her inside. They started drinkin’ at some party ‘til she was three sheets to the wind Merian is drinking with some people she met at the party. Suddenly, she sways on her feet. Her eyes widen as the realization that she’s drunk hits her. After a quick search, it is clear the friends she came with are no place to be found. With no way home and shame burning through her veins, Merian makes a choice. Her momma always told her she could call no matter what Sally answers the phone. Her eyes narrow. Wufei comes up beside her. Sally says something to her husband and he gets the car keys. His face is expressionless. Sally looks at him with concern, but he brushes her off. She was cryin’ on the front steps when her mom showed up Merian is on the front porch of the house when Sally drives up. She tries to hide the fact that she’s been crying by wiping her cheeks roughly. Wufei steps out of the car and faces his daughter; his expression is as hard as stone. What do you say in a moment like this Sally watches as father and daughter stare at each other. Shame lighting up the younger’s face, something indefinable on the older. When you can’t find the words to tell it like it is Merian’s mouth opens and closes several times. Sally reaches out to Wufei, unsure. He ignores her and walks to his daughter. Just bite your tongue and let your heart lead the way Merian looks down as Wufei approaches. She has stained the family honor. He’s probably going to throw her out or something. Instead, when Wufei reaches his child, he wraps her in a fierce hug. Hesitantly at first, then with all her heart, she hugs him back. Let’s get out of here Still holding Merian, Wufei walks her to the car telling her how much he will always love her. Oh what do you say Sally stares, mouth open. She doesn’t know what to say, but she is sure of one thing. She married one hell of a man. Sometimes you’ve got to listen to the silence A teenage Calindra is standing in the middle an empty field. Her eyes are closed and she is listening intently to the wind. It blows gently through the grass making wave patterns around her.. And give yourself a little time to think Heero stands at the edge of the field, his arms around Duo. Together, they watch the only child they have. Duo looks content, but lost in thought. Heero has a slight smile on his face, however, it is focused on the man in his arms. His every breath is weaker than the last Duo lays on a hospital bed. He has an array of IV’s stuck in him. A breathing tube is placed in his nose. His entire body shakes a little every time he inhales. And lately when he sleeps he talks about the past Duo tosses and turns on the hospital bed. He constantly mumbles even though it is clear the young man is asleep. Heero gently holds his hand. Concern and fear war for control of the former soldier’s features. His husband knows he’s tired of holdin’ on Heero talks quietly with a doctor near Duo’s room. The longhaired pilot’s room is full of people. All look very worried or worse. Calindra, arms crossed and looking extremely hostile, stands against the wall at the foot of the bed. Quatre and Trowa occupy a corner to the right of Duo’s bed. Quatre is quietly crying into Trowa’s shoulder. Their children surround them and fill the hallway as well. The only one missing is Dason. Wufei and Sally are on Duo’s left. Sally is inconspicuously supporting the Asian man. He is too consumed with grief to care about a show of weakness. Their children are there also; the only exception being Jeren. Zechs and Treize stand in the far corner of the room. Like shadows afraid to intrude. Their two sets of twins flank them. Finally, standing at various points in the room are Une, Noin, and Hilde. He looks at him Duo calls softly for Heero and says I want to go home The request doesn’t surprise the former Wing pilot. Heero turns to the doctor who shakes his head. There is no hope for Duo. They have done everything they can and it is not enough. Heero turns back to the love of his life, eyes shining. What do you say in a moment like this All eyes turn to the doctor then back to Heero and Duo. Questions, concern, fears, anger, and guilt. All these things and more are reflected in those eyes. When you can’t find the words to tell it like it is Heero tries several times to tell Duo something, but he has never been good at expressing his emotions. He is better at showing them. Calindra’s face is now closed. Rage radiates from her eyes. Pain, however, is eating her up behind the rage. Just close your eyes and let your heart lead the way Heero closes his eyes briefly. When he opens them, they hold a determined expression. With cold precision, Heero removes the IV’s from Duo. His lover hardly even notices; he is that far gone. Finally clear of all medical equipment, Heero lifts him into his arms. Duo seems very tiny in his arms. A small army of hospital personnel flood the hall and try to stop him. They give way as everyone from the room walks beside the once pilot. Their expressions cold and promising death to any who try to stop Heero. One person is missing. Calindra. Oh what do you say Calindra is running in the hospital parking lot. She reaches a motorcycle and starts it. For a few seconds she just sits there. Open eyed, she stares at the sky, tears streaming down her cheeks. Oh just close your eyes and let your heart lead the way Calindra stands pointing gun at someone, but it is impossible to see who. Her expression is a curious mixture of rage, grief, and compassion. She pulls the trigger and two small splashes of blood appear. One on her forehead and the other one under her right eye. It looks like a tear of blood. Oh what do you say Everyone is gathered together at Heero and Duo’s house. It is comfortable two-story building set against a forest with a field near by. Almost everyone is crying or being comforted. A few are just standing around looking shocked. Heero isn’t with the group. He is outside. The man stands staring up at Wing and Deathscythe. Tears flow silently down his face. In the distance, a storm is coming. Oo what do you say Calindra stands in the open field; the storm rages around her, but the girl doesn’t seem to notice. Face titled toward the sky, her eyes are closed and water pours down her face. Whether it is tears or rain is impossible to tell.
