New Generation by Phoenix Part Two "I killed them." The statement was quietly said, but it echoed in the room like the bomb it was. Zechs grabbed his commander and threw him at the guards. Heero and Duo had been killed by their daughter? It didn’t seem possible. Looking at her, however, doubts evaporated. This girl was insane. There was no telling what she could do. The pilots themselves were in shock. Jeren wanted to deny it, but it made sense. The ways Calindra acted, her dislike of being around the original pilots, and her refusal to speak of her fathers, it all fit perfectly. His heart wouldn’t believe it though. There was more than just insanity in her eyes. The young man saw something deep in the cobalt pools. Self-loathing and a soul deep pain. The others had no problem believing her, however. Merian moved in front Jeren. Trey pushed Dason behind him. The guards covered the smiling girl with every gun they had. Zechs stood defensively in front of a mildly annoyed Treize who calmly stepped out of the shelter. None of them had a problem with accepting the plain statement as truth. They stood ready. Almost afraid to move; a delicate balance had settled over the room and all recognized it. What would happen if it was disturbed? It could have been seconds, minutes, or hours that they stood frozen. Time had stopped with Calindra’s statement. But all things must end. A soft, gentle, and compassion filled voice broke the silence. "I don’t believe you killed them." Dason stepped around his brother easily avoiding attempts to stop him. His hand was over his heart and his eyes looked into Calindra’s and did not flinch. "My heart tells me you aren’t an evil person. What really happened?" All eyes bounced between the small blonde and the silent girl. For a moment it appeared that she would not answer. Then the insane smile crumpled and was replaced by one of anger. Dason never turned his gaze. Calindra focused the new glare on Treize. Zechs stepped between them only to find the general moving away from him again and into the open. A small gesture ordered Zechs and his men to stay back. "Why don’t you tell them, General? After all, I’m sure you figured it out. You always were a smart man." The tone was no different. Calindra still sounded dead inside. Treize was shocked. "I have no idea what you are talking about child," he said evenly. A cruel, cold laugh followed his statement. Calindra did not believe him. "You really want to know what happened, dear Dason?" The blonde nodded. His gentle gaze focused entirely on her. "Very well. You are wrong, Dason. I did kill them. Oh maybe not with my own hands, but I brought death to them." She shifted her position. Her arms hung limp at her sides, hands curled into fists, and once more her head was bowed. She couldn’t face them with her sin. "I met a man my first semester in college. David. He was perfect. Everything I ever dreamed of loving." A bitter laugh escaped her lips. "I should have known he was too good to be true. I fell in love with him. At the end of the year, he asked me to marry him. I said yes. Heero and Duo wanted to meet him, so I took him home." She faced the General. "You were always looking for us on L2, but we never left Earth. We had a small farm in the middle of what used to be Canada. Maybe we should have let you find us." Calindra sighed and fell into a temporary silence. Just when everyone thought the silence would have no end, the girl continued. Treize remained the focus of her attention. "I took him home. Heero was suspicious. Nothing odd there. Duo welcomed him like a son. For two days they got to know him. Everything seemed great. Heero didn’t even threaten to kill him. Thing were going great. Or at least, I thought they were. On the third night, David made me a midnight snack. He was always doing that. I poured the drink in the sink. Never could stand how he made tea. About two in morning, I woke up and found David gone. That was...odd. David wasn’t the kind of guy who just got up and walked off in the middle of the night. Then it hit me: the house was too silent. No sounds of Duo snoring or anyone moving around. There should have been at least the sound of David doing something. I knew something was wrong. OZ might have found us. Heero never stopped believing you and Zechs were still alive somewhere. The constant searches of L2 were a real tip off. I had a gun in my nightstand. A precaution left over from my younger days. Never thought I’d need it. Not in my own home. Not then." By now, even the guards were hanging on her words. Heero and Duo were legendary. How had they died? Who had killed them? Why did she feel responsible? Treize kept his gaze locked with hers. It wasn’t easy. The anger and pain swimming in the cobalt lakes burned into his soul. Calindra was too young to know this kind of suffering. Treize would have given almost anything to heal her wound. At least he could find out what had caused it. "As I was walking down the hallway, I heard Duo shout. He sounded like he was in pain. Do you know what that’s like general? To hear your parent suffering? I ran to their door. Just as my hand touched the knob I heard a low sort of puff. Heero had once shown me how a silencer worked. I recognized the sound. It’s a terrible sound. So soft, so deadly. I pushed the door open slowly when all I wanted was to run to my fathers and make sure they were alright. I was so worried about David too. Had the intruder killed him? Was he hurt somewhere? Imagine my shock when I opened the door to find David pointing a gun at Heero." Everyone in the room just stared. The man she loved had killed her parents? And she had taken him there. No wonder there was so much pain in her eyes. "Heero and Duo always enjoyed games. Heero had cuffed Duo to the headboard. That’s how David found them apparently. My dear fiancee was explaining to Heero how his orders were only to kill Duo and take Heero and me back to base. The bastard actually had the nerve to chastise Heero for trying to protect Duo. That’s why he shot my father you know. Because Heero got in the way. I couldn’t see how badly Heero was hurt, but I could see Duo. One shot to the chest. He was dead before I got there. The shot I heard must have been the one that got Heero." Once again, Calindra paused lost in reflection. "I never even got to tell Duo goodbye or how much I loved him." It was said so softly, all knew they hadn’t been meant to hear it. Treize, however, hear it. Heard all the regrets, the pain, the loss. No one that young should bear this kind of suffering. "Child, I swear I never..." Whatever else Treize might have said got lost as Calindra all but exploded at him. "SHUT UP, General." The angry woman took one step toward the man who in turn stood his ground. "Do you think I care? You are in charge so it’s your responsibility. Nothing happens without your knowledge. I don’t think Heero or Duo ever expected you to use me to get at them. For some reason, they thought you to be above such things. I’d say this little plot proves otherwise. Wouldn’t you?" Not waiting for an answer, she once more slipped back into her old posture and continued to tell the tale of her once family. "I wanted to kill David as soon as I saw what he’d done. That tore me up inside. I had to hear what the whole thing was about though. I had to know why Duo was dead. I had to. So I listened. David gloated. It was so easy to seduce me. So easy to gain my trust. So easy to drug my tea. When I awoke, I would be a prisoner. I was such a fool." Bitterness and self-hate dripped from the last statement and more than one person flinched. "Finally, he remarked that since Heero was so badly hurt it would be more convenient to just kill him and take me back alone. Probably make breaking me much simpler. I let him raise the gun. Just as his finger tighten on the trigger, I softly called his name. He was so shocked. I saw it on his face, right before I put a bullet between his eyes. Made quite a mess." A collective shudder ran through the group in the cell. How could she talk so frankly and coldly about kill the man she loved? Did she feel anything? "After I was done with David, I went to check on Heero. He had a stomach wound and massive of blood loss. There wasn’t anything I could do. Nothing. So I held him. He told me how much he and Duo loved me. How proud they were of me. He said that what happened wasn’t my fault. I promised him revenge. You know he told me not to. Seek revenge that is. Heero said it would kill my soul and wouldn’t make me feel any better. He said it wouldn’t heal the wounds. Only forgiveness could take the pain away. I will never understand how he thought that. I buried Heero and Duo in a single grave behind the house. It’s what they would have wanted. I left David’s body for the animals. Only thing left was getting revenge." "And what comes after the revenge, Calindra?" A gentle voice asked. Turning to Dason, Calindra almost smiled. "An end to the pain." "You mean death?" Jeren had to know. Calindra had too much passion to just die. Not just sexual passion, but he’d felt something when she kissed him. Vitality burned through her like the sun. To allow her to fade from life was wrong. "Yes." This time she did smile. Beautifully. The smile held complete acceptance of her decision. No regrets. No worries. It was the smile of someone who knew her destiny and embraced it wholeheartedly. "No!" One word spoken by two voices at once. Trey and Treize looked surprised at their outburst. They weren’t the only ones. "Trey," Merian said, placing a restraining hand on her brother’s arm. Zechs did the same for Treize. The General, however, broke away from the touch. "You are far too young to consider an option like that." Treize told her. The words were calm and even. "There’s so much waiting for you. Surely you can see that?" His answer was a derisive laugh. "Like what, General? My fathers are dead. I have no other family." A high pitched, shrieking voice from the hall outside the cell broke off the discussion. The slight sound of a scuffle could be heard as the guards outside the room tried to keep someone from entering. Calindra winced at the voice, while Zechs just sighed. "Heero isn’t dead. There’s no way he would die for that perverted creature. Only Duo was supposed to die. Make her tell the truth. Heero isn’t dead!" Finally, the guards managed to drag the unseen speaker away. All the tension drained from Calindra’s form. At last, she had the answer. At long last. "What do you want me to do, General? I can’t go back to being what I was and I am so tired of what I am." The tone held weariness beyond bearing. "Let’s end this little charade, General. Time for the curtain to go up on the second act." Matching her tone perfectly, Treize agreed. Not even looking at the guards, he issued a two word command. "Do it." Without even considering consequences of the command, the guards faced their captives and fired. "Bastard!" Calindra howled and launched herself at Treize. She hadn’t expected him to kill anyone. He was supposed to need all the pilots alive. Even as she moved, three impacts struck. One on her right shoulder, another on her left leg, and finally her throat. Hands closed on darts not bullet holes. Drugs? He was drugging them? Then the world shifted on its axis and Calindra was falling. One dart she could handle; maybe even two, but three were too many. Arms caught her. Dimly, she knew it was the General. Someone in a white jacket entered. A doctor or scientist? Calindra was too far-gone to be able to tell, but she could hear the conversation. "Is this the one?" The doctor asked. "Yes. She will undergo treatment first. If it works on this one, there should be no problems with the others." Treize confirmed. Calindra struggled against the drug. Treatment? This could be bad. Then Treize was speaking again. "Can you take away her pain?" He couldn’t mean what she thought. Could he? "You mean remove the memories that cause the pain?" The doctor this time. "No. I would never take something as precious as family from anyone. Is there a way she could keep the memories, but have it so they didn’t hurt so much?" "We can only try, General. Now we need to get these children to the infirmary before the sedative wears off." The last thing Calindra consciously felt was being place on a gurney and strapped in. While everything slipped away, Calindra heard, as if from a great distance, two men talking. "They’re not children. Not hardly." "Treize, you know we have to do this. If not just for Mars than for all of humanity. The pilots are the only ones who stand a chance." "I know that, Zechs. Truly, I do. I...I hate doing this to them. Forcing them to follow when all I want is to ask." "Do you really think any of them would have believed our story? Even Une or Noin? What happened to Heero and Duo wasn’t your fault. There was no way to know she would go that far. Not even I suspected and she’s my sister." "They deserved better than that, Zechs. These kids deserve better than this." "I know, lover. I know." Then everything was gone. Except the darkness and the nightmares.
