Mind Over Matter by Phoenix

Part Three

For three days there had been a strange, tense sort of quiet on Quatre's estate. The attack on Duo made no sense and frightened, angered, and frustrated everyone, right down to the last servant. The fear came from the fact that no one had been able to stop the young man's violation. Helplessness was not something the Arabian's people were used to feeling; it was new to them and scary. The anger came from knowing the pilot had made it through the war in one piece only to have this happen and in front of his lover and friends. The frustration came from knowing they couldn't protect Duo. Whatever the thing was, it was powerful and unknown. How do you protect your loved one from something you can't find?

Quatre stood outside the American's third story room and listened. Heero would not leave Duo's side and the guilt each felt was tearing them apart. The Wing pilot thought he should have protected his love from the thing assaulting him; nevermind the fact that no one else was able to. Duo felt guilt over the burns covering the Japanese man's arms and shoulders. There were even some burns on his chest. All because Heero tired to help him. Each stewed in his own guilt; the silence eating both alive.

Well, the small blond had decided it was time the two stubborn fools talk. The silence needed to end. Taking a deep breath, he opened the door ready to cut off any argument, but his words lodged in his throat. Before him was a sight straight from a nightmare.

Heero hung three feet off the floor, suspended by a white sheet wrapped around his neck. His hands clawed at the fabric slowly choking the life out of him even as his legs searched for anything to stand on. The look in his eyes was a mixture of fury and fear.

Duo lay, spread out, on the bed, his clothes in tatters and a pillowcase stuffed in his mouth to prevent his screams from reaching anyone. The skin on his wrists and ankles had already broken as he tried in vain to escape his invisible attacker. Blood stained the bedsheet in several places and Quatre knew Duo had once again been violated by this thing.

The pilot of Sandrock summoned all his psychic strength and sent a burst of pure power toward whatever held his friends. For a split second, a form was outlined over Duo. In that second, Quatre saw a twisted, hate filled face turn toward him. A blow of intense energy caught him in the chest and flung him backward. He collided with the railing and felt something pick him up. The world tilted crazily and with a cry, Quatre flew over the railing and began the long fall to the floor.
