A Little Magic by Phoenix

Part Two

The prince didn't hear his friend, however, as he disappeared over a hill. Quatre rushed after Duo, ever mindful of his fellow elf's amazing ability to find trouble anywhere. He caught up to Duo and found his friend watching an amazing sight. Two humans were fighting what looked like a small army of trolls, twenty from the look of it. The men stood back-to-back, faces set in grim determination. Both elves knew it was hopeless battle. Trolls were larger, stronger, and far nastier than either elves or humans. Still, the two men were putting up a good fight.

Duo watched the dark haired fighter with fascination. He'd never seen a human who could move with that much grace. Every sword stroke found its mark; it was like a deadly, but incredibly beautiful dance. The prince also found the human's cobalt eyes remarkable. Humans weren't supposed to have eyes that deep, that soulful.

Quatre found himself entranced by the endless green eyes of the other fighter. There was such pain, determination, and anger in that gaze. The healer in Quatre immediately wanted to enfold the human in a warm embrace and protect this man. The elf knew humans though had strange ideas about parings and the young human might take offence.

Finally, a troll fell and two more took its place. Each man bleed from over a dozen wounds and they were gasping with exhaustion. Around them lay seven dead monsters, an incredible feat for two mortals, but the fight was now over. The men backed up against each other until touching. Duo heard them whisper goodbye to the other and realized something: he couldn't let these men die; they were too brave to die like this. He always carried a sword and a few daggers with him. These men would not die without a fight on his part. Drawing his sword, Duo shouted his family's battle cry and charged into the battle.

Quatre heard the yell and turned to see Duo rushing down the hill. Before anyone knew what was going on, the Prince had cut two monsters in half and started in on a third. Not wishing to be left out, Quatre cast heal spells on the two humans and slow spells on the trolls. Now the battle was a little more even.

Gathering his strength, the blond magician began a powerful fire spell; the one weakness the giant monsters had was fire. He was distracted, however, by the appearance of a black robed figure on a hill on the other side of the battle. The other man's eyes were like pools of dark as they bore into the blue eyes of the elf. Fear clenched Quatre's stomach. Things had just gotten much worse.

Heero and Trowa, for their part, were stunned by the sudden turn of events. They'd been patrolling when ambushed by an army of monsters. Unable to escape or summon help, the two men fought bravely, knowing they could not win. Yet, just as their strength gave out, help did arrive and from a most unlikely source. A yell brought the battle's participants' attention to a slender figure almost flying down the hill and dispatching two trolls before anyone had a chance to even get a good look at the newcomer. Then a sudden feeling of energy filled them and the wounds the warriors had began to heal. The mortals recognized a healing spell when they felt one.

Trowa found himself staring at the blond elf standing over the battle and knew he was the source of the healing spell. Heero could not take his eyes off the chestnut haired elf as he cut down troll after troll. He was so incredibly fast. Sensing they now had a chance, the two warriors threw themselves once more into the fight, deciding to wonder why two elves, the enemies of humans, would help them later. Battle cries filled the air and the clash of steel soon echoed.

Above the battle, Quatre cast spell after spell at the black robed sorcerer. The creature easily countered time and again, making it seem as if it were playing with the elf. None of that mattered to the determined spell caster; he needed to keep this thing's attention off his Prince and the fighters until they could all work together.

So it went for a time; Heero, Trowa, and Duo fought the trolls with great skill, working together as if they were meant to, Quatre kept the magic wielder busy. The elves and the humans made slow progress as time passed and finally the last monster fell. Just in time by Quatre's appraisal. He had little energy left and his shields were buckling under the attacks of his enemy.

"Duo," Quatre's exhausted call rang out over the battlefield as the last troll died. "I could use some help!"

Seeing his friend's dilemma, the Prince drew one of his ever-present daggers. The metal was very special, no spell could affect it nor stop its flight. A single flick of his wrist and the weapon flew true. The robed being did not react as expected, though. A grim smile cut its face and all the assembled could feel the build up of power.

"Death Spell," Quatre yelled desperately. Some magic users could summon up all their power into one final blow to be delivered at the time of death. Few shields held up against such magic and hardly any survived the vicious last attack. Ignoring his own safety, the blond elf used the last of his strength to shield his friend and the humans. Darkness claimed him just as the Death Spell was unleashed.

'At least,' Quatre thought, 'I won't feel much pain when I die.'

Below him, Duo felt the shield spell encircle him and the others. A quick looked showed Quatre slowly sliding to the ground. Anger filled the elven Prince and he summoned his birthright. Power surged through him as all living things granted the elf a portion of their life-force. Using what little magic skill he had, Duo manipulated the power into shielding all his allies from the last spell the enemy would ever cast.

A flash of impenetrable darkness spread from the dead sorcerer and washed over the gathered men like a tidal wave. Heero and Trowa heard the agonized scream of the longhaired elf, but could not see him. After what felt like an eternity, sight returned. Trowa's eyes immediately sought out the small magician. A still figure lay on the hill amidst smoking ground and dead plants, blond hair stained by soot. Not waiting for Heero, the tall human ran to check on the unconscious immortal.

Heero looked for the longhaired fighter and found him lying face down on similarly scorched and dead ground. The cobalt-eyed fighter carefully turned over his new ally. During the fight, there'd been little time to admire this creature's beauty and now Heero did so at length. Seldom did he let his emotions loose, but now they took on a life of their own. The elf's face was young looking, heart-shaped, and so enticing the mortal almost stole a kiss from his sleeping savior. The urge was shattered by the arrival of Heero's commander, General Treize.

The man took in the scene and stared yelling orders. Healers poured down the hill, shortly followed by several warriors. The assembled men and women quickly took charge of the elves and the General motioned for the pair to follow him; there was much to discuss.

Unnoticed by any of the humans, a single elf watched as his Prince and Quatre were taken away. A low growl erupted from his throat and black eyes burned with an inner fire. He, Chang Wufei, had failed in his Duty. Duo and Quatre were prisoners of the hated humans and their larger numbers prevented him from taking any action. For now anyway. Tonight was a different matter. Once the sunset, the rescue would begin. Determination replaced anger in the young elf's heart.

Tonight, the arrogant humans would pay the price for attacking an elven Prince. Wufei would make sure it was a very high price. After all, the signs of his friends' struggle clearly marked the area and he had to make sure every pain they suffered in the battle was returned a hundred fold. Soon. Very, very soon.
