The Harem Of Quatre by Phoenix

Part Four

Zechs carefully made his way through the streets of Quatre's capital city. He'd managed to infiltrate the harem and learned much, but now had to make his way back to the others without being caught. While certain no one knew of the switch, and would not discover it for another several hours, the young platinum blond refused to take chances. There was too much at stake.

Over the past months, friends, family, and comrades of those taken to be the King's "brides" found each other. Getting past vast differences, they worked for a common goal: save their loved ones. Zechs, who was a master spy in his former land, infiltrated the harem to learn the lay out of the palace and how the captives fared. The plan worked wonderfully, except for his seeing the newest victim.

The boy had been incredibly beautiful. Such soulful eyes. So much sadness. For hours on end, the youth just stared at the city; lost in the agony of knowing he could never again be free. The image was burned into the spy's mind. It made his blood burn for vengeance like never before. How could anyone take an innocent, a wild, free, youth and rip it all from him?

Part of the fury came from the man seeing his own past. In the country where he once worked it was not uncommon for children of promise to be taken from their families and trained in various jobs. Zechs had been Milardo until the day an assassin murdered his father and tried to kill the son who witnessed the crime. The murderer died in the attempt and less than three days later, another government assassin claimed the boy who had killed one of their own.

Years of harsh, often cruel, training turned him into a skilled spy and killer. However, it was the leaders' of his country turning over his best friend, Kurama, to the blond ruler that broke their hold on him. A renegade, he hunted those who had escorted the drugged and helpless redhead to his "husband." Killing them was not nearly as satisfying as he'd hoped.

Through the bloodshed he found others also tracking down missing people. They formed a team to find and save the "brides." Their headquarters was a small, ramshackle shack at the edges of the city. A shack he now stood outside. Silencing all memories, the spy took one last look around. An empty street greeted his eyes.

Slipping inside his eyes quickly adjusted. Those around the room slowly resheathed the weapons they had drawn at the sound of an approaching figure. Looking around did not reveal the one who led them.

"Where is Sephiroth?"

"Behind you. Where else?" A soft, deep voice notified.

Spinning, Zechs found the tall man there. Sephiroth was one of the few people he never would take a contract against; something about the man was too inhuman, too perfect.

"What have you found?"

For the next hour the spy related all he learned over the days stalking the palace. Getting anyone out would be next to impossible; even if they did escape, the bond with King Quatre could not be thwarted for long.

"So we have an army of guards, a magical location spell on everyone, and no way we could lay low in the city if we somehow manage to succeed?" Sephiroth was growling.

"Yes."

Further discussion was halted by the arrival of a local man whose sister had been taken recently. Kuno was a skilled fighter though his temper often got in the way. His sister was known throughout the land as an herbalist with no match. For that reason, someone chose her as a Bride. Kuno tried to stop her kidnapping only to be beaten almost to death.

Two friends, Ranma and Ryoga, took him in after the fight and did their best to heal his wounds. Unfortunately, he would never again hold a sword in either hand. Instead of breaking the young warrior, it only fed his need for revenge and to save his sister. The house they plotted in belonged to the three men.

"I see from your expression Zechs' news was all bad." He wouldn't look anyone in the eye. "Well let me add to it. No wizard in this city will try to break the marriage bond. Most feel such a thing would kill all involved."

Shocked silence filled the room. If they could not break the bond allowing the King to find his "brides" anywhere, they could never stop running. Quatre was known as a man who never gave up once he put his mind to something. As he had gone to a great deal of trouble to claim their family, friends, and lovers, there was no way he would simply let them walk away.

"We'll be hunted for the rest of our lives." Hiei hissed.

"Like animals," a man called Seifer sneered.

"There must be a way!" Zechs felt desperation building within him. He could not leave Kurama in that drugged half-life. Waiting to be used again. And what of the newest bride? How long before that beautiful young man took his own life out of desperation? Or the others?

"Then we will find him," Tira proclaimed. "We will find someone who will break the binding without endangering our loved ones."

"I have more news," Kuno interrupted. "Seven new 'Brides' have been chosen and announced."

"And?" Sephiroth growled. This had to be very bad news if Kuno were so reluctant to tell it.

"One of the names," he paused, shaking.

"Well!" Just about everyone snapped.

"It's Sephiroth. One of the brides is to be you, Sephiroth."
