Cinderella... Phoenix Style (oh that sounds sooooooo pompous) by Phoenix

teaser

Once upon a time there lived a kind and gracious widower named G. He had two sons named Duo and Quatre. Duo had very long chestnut hair, deep, soulful, violet eyes, and a cheerful nature. Quatre was slender with golden hair, sky blue eyes, and a gently personality. G shared his mansion with an old friend named Dermail who had no place else to go. The man was the same age as G, but seemed to look down on his friend. Dermail had two sons named Tranto and Tsubarov. The sons were older than Duo or Quatre and often treated them badly when G wasn't around. Needless to say, the young men did not like any of their father's guests, but never showed their dislike; they loved G too much to hurt him by making him choose between his sons and his friend.

When Duo and Quatre were fifteen, G met with a terrible accident and died. Everything he owned was left to his beloved sons, but because the young men were still minors, Dermail had himself appointed the boys' guardian. His first action was to move Duo and Quatre to the mansion's west wing away from everyone. The boys' clothes were replaced with rags, their toys burned, and they were forbidden to ever leave the house grounds. In one day, the brothers lost everything. The worse blow was yet to come, however.

Dermail dismissed all the servants and ordered Duo and Quatre to take their place. He almost seemed to take pleasure from forcing them to work long hours. By the end of the first year, although both young men had grown over a foot, neither had gained any weight. They were covered with soot or dust most of the time, yet Duo would not cut his hair and Quatre did his best to make sure it was washed at least once a week. Despite all this, the beauty of the young men shone through; enough to attract unwanted attention from Dermail and his sons.

As their sixteenth year passed, the older men began brushing up against them more and more, finding reasons to touch them, and even watching them most of the day. The brothers were aware of the change in attitude, but didn't know what to do about it. If they ran away, they would have no shelter, money, or place to go. The law also allowed Dermail to have them hunted down, as he was their guardian; once caught, he'd never let them go. So they put up with it and did their best to avoid the men.

Their seventeenth year saw them even more beautiful than before. Both young men were slender, graceful, and their hair, when clean, moved like satin along their backs. Quatre had discovered a fresh water spring contained in a natural cave not far from their property and every week he and his brother went there to bathe; neither felt safe at home any longer. It was during one of their visits to the spring that the young pair's luck began to change.

It was a warm spring day and the water had been heated slightly by the sun making this bath more pleasurable than others. Duo stood quietly at the center of the pool as his brother worked the shampoo through the young man's long tresses. Quatre loved Duo's hair but hated the amount of care it needed; he always made sure to help his brother take care of the silken mass.

Finished with the washing, Quatre smiled mischievously and suddenly put all his weight on Duo's shoulders, pushing him under the water. It didn't take long for the longhaired brother to escape his smaller sibling's grasp and surface. Smiling just as widely as his brother, Duo pounced. Soon the cave echoed with joyous laughter.

It was that laughter which drew four men to the cave. Two of the men looked like twins except one seemed older than the other. They both had wild brown hair and dark blue eyes that seemed cold even in the daylight. Another man had a bang hanging over half his face, concealing it, but one green eye was visible on the opposite side of his face. The final man had black hair hanging just past his shoulders. He was shorter than the rest, but carried himself with great dignity. All of them were dressed in very fancy clothes, marking them as part of the Aristocracy that ruled the land.

The echo of laughter drew the men to the entrance of the cave, but being cautious by nature, they hid themselves from those within. Carefully, they peered over the rocks to view the occupants of the cavern. Before them were Quatre and Duo, naked, their lithe bodies sliding gracefully through the water as they playful chased each other. As one, the men's jaws dropped; such raw beauty was unheard of. At Court, everyone wore make-up to cover their blemishes, but here were two, naturally attractive. And they were peasants! These two had never been to Court; they would be remembered.

At last, the longhaired one managed to capture the blond and force him underwater. A short struggle resulted. When the smaller man surfaced, his soft voice echoed in the cave.

"I surrender! Brother! I give up!"

Alto laughter met this proclamation. "Alright, Quatre. I accept."

Quatre and Duo. The names rang through the minds of the watchers. Looking at each other, the four could see the same thought ruled their minds: It was time to make some introductions.

The rustle of the men's clothes caught the brothers' attention. They turned to find four Lords staring at them. Duo quickly pushed Quatre behind him and glared defiantly at the newcomers. Being noticed by Royalty was never a good thing.
