Once upon a time there lived an old man who had four sons. Each young man was very smart and was as different from the others as he could be. One was so gentle, no animal feared him; another was so fierce all living things feared him; the oldest had forked eyebrows and a noble nature; the final son ranted about justice all day long.
It so happened that one day the old man called his sons together and told them he did not have enough inheritance for each child. To determine which of his children was most deserving of his wealth, the old man gave them one year to find a bride. Whoever brought home the prettiest and most useful bride would be declared the heir. Anyone who did not make it back within one year was automatically disqualified.
The next morning, each brother set out in a different direction to seek their future spouse. Quatre, the gentle one, went south. Heero, the fierce one, went north. Treize, the eyebrowed one, went west. Wufei, the ranter, went east. None of them saw the malicious gleam in their father's eyes.
