The corridor is long, dark and hollow, empty like the thud you hear when the world drops out from under you. Heero cocks his head to the side, listening for any telltale sounds of movement from within the rooms as he passes each door.
The silence is oppressive as he nears his destination, and he treads carefully to avoid alerting any of the occupants. He had been determined to save an innocent, and Heero Yuy was nothing if not determined.
With one arm tucked into his side, he carefully runs his fingers over the keypad, obtaining entrance to the room at the end of the hall in a matter of seconds. The door slids open and he slips inside, waiting for the soft hiss of the door closing behind him.
He takes a deep breath, relieved to have avoided detection from those who would interfere with his mission. He crosses the room, to the bed in the corner, and sits down on the edge of the unyielding mattress.
With infinite care, he removes the kitten nestled in the crook of his elbow and places it on his pillow. He taps its nose gently with his finger and smiles softly as it begins to purr.
Heero Yuy's apartment did not allow pets, but as he'd told himself when he'd scooped up the animal, what the neighbors don't know, won't hurt them.
