Wufei parked, and turned off the engine. Then he wiped damp palms on his slacks.
"So," he said.
"Wufei," Duo began, simultaneously.
"You go--"
"You first."
Wufei, annoyed, tapped the wheel with two fingers. "All right," he said firmly. "*You* first."
Duo ran a hand through his disheveled hair a little self-consciously. "Uh... nice night."
"Yeah." The Chinese boy made a decision, and reached behind his seat, grabbing the bag stored there. Then he opened his door and got out, motioning for Duo to follow. He locked the car behind him and slung an arm over Duo's shoulders. "Let's go by that tree over there," he said, and drew the other boy toward it.
When they settled beneath it, Duo seemed to come to a conclusion of his own, and lay down, pulling Wufei on top of him. He wrapped his arms around the Chinese teenager's neck and kissed him fiercely. A little surprised, but hardly objecting, Wufei teased the pale cheeks and pressure-swollen lips with his mouth, shifting eagerly as warm hands began an erratic, erotic journey over his body. If things kept up this rapidly accelerating pace, Wufei knew they were going to have to move back to the car, or risk public exposure of an event that required at least nominal privacy.
"What's got you so impatient?" he whispered, breaking away.
Duo shook his head, then began to nibble Wufei's earlobe, his hot damp breaths making the other boy shiver, then squirm as a darting tongue added to the new torment.
Strangely, he found himself protesting again. "Since when did you decide it was okay for us to do this?"
Duo tried to get Wufei to kiss him again, then, unsuccessful, laid back.
"I want to tell you... " he said, and stopped. "Wu... "
The Chinese boy propped himself up one elbow so he could look down at Duo, sensing something serious. He tried not to sound apprehensive as he asked, "What?" frowning to hide his nervousness. He traced Duo's cheek with his fingers. His frown deepened when he felt the wetness gathered on Duo's eyelashes; slowly, he bent and kissed the tears away. "Tell me," he whispered.
"Wu... I... "
"Tell me," Wufei commanded, frowning down at him. But Duo shook his head, and buried his face against Wufei's chest, mumbling inaudibly and slipping his arms around Wufei's waist.
It took him perhaps three minutes to coax the unfinished sentence out of the other boy; what he heard, finally, made him sigh. Duo *wanted* to make love to him, but he was too wound up from fighting with Heero, and his back hurt too much. He was afraid he wouldn't satisfy Wufei.
"It's all right," he murmured, nuzzling the disheveled chestnut hair. "It's fine. It's enough to be here with you."
"Do you really mean those things?" Duo whispered.
Wufei was silent for a long time. Then he said, "Honestly, I don't know."
Duo swallowed hard. "That's the other thing," he mumbled. He took a short, deep breath. He met Wufei's eyes squarely. "I'm just going to say it straight out," he said, though for just a moment he seemed to choke on the words. "Wufei... I love you. I'm in love with you."
Wufei's mouth dropped open. His hand on Duo's cheek stilled.
It was out... Duo finally faltered, and let his eyes slide away. "Don't feel like you have to say anything. In fact, I don't want you to, because I know it would just be be-because you don't want me to f-feel stupid. I know you don't feel anything that strong for me. I'm not even asking you to, I just--"
"Duo."
"It was just something I had to say, that I wanted you to know about me. About how I feel about you. A reason for--for acting the way I want to act with you. Do you understand? I want--I mean, I don't want to hold back with you. Because I--and I won't say it again, ever, because I'm sure it makes you uncomfortable. But I just wanted you to know."
"Duo... "
Duo looked up. "Yeah?" he forced out.
Wufei's eyebrows were drawn together in hesitant black slashes; he was thinking deeply, struggling with himself. Softly he asked, "I thought you didn't believe in falling in love at our age."
"I thought I believed that, too. It wasn't until I said it that I knew... knew it was a lie." The braided teenager uncomfortably wiped his eyes again. "I don't lie, you know that. It's not--not my style." He bit his lip, and looked away.
Wufei made an educated guess. "He made a move on you, didn't he."
Slowly Duo nodded. "But don't be too angry with him, Wufei. If he hadn't, I wouldn't--I don't think I would have known just how much I want *you* to be--what you are to me. Heero was like... like a dream. A perfect dream, my best friend, giving me the perfect kiss at the perfect moment and everything with us just--perfect. Wufei, you're definitely not perfect, but I've just begun to realise... "
"You don't want the perfect lover," he finished.
"What I want," Duo said, touching Wufei's mouth gently, "what I want is you."
Heero winced as the cabinet creaked slightly as he closed it; he stilled, and waited nearly a full minute to be sure that no one had heard. Then he checked the clip of the gun, and reinserted it as silently as possible. He made sure the small, compact weapon would stay secure in his inside coat pocket, and left his father's study to walk nonchalantly into the living room.
His mother looked up as he passed them by. "Where are *you* going, young man?" Her sudden question prompted Odin to look up from the television; he flashed a white-toothed smile at his son.
"I was going to go for a bike ride," Heero said. "Is that okay?"
Sally looked a little torn. On the one hand, her son had barely moved in the past week, and it was about time he got out of the house--and on the other hand, the reason he hadn't left his room in that week was that something was wrong, horribly wrong, and she still didn't know what it was... or if Heero might do something stupid because of it.
Heero assessed his mother's mood, and added, "I just need to think, Mom. Somewhere with some fresh air. There're some things I just need to--work out."
Odin put his arm around Sally's shoulders. Kindly he said, "Go on, Heero. We'll keep your meal warm for you."
Sally uneasily shook her head. "Be back by dark," she commanded.
"Or thereabouts," moderated her husband.
Heero smiled. "Yeah. I will." He left them, and headed to the garage to get his bicycle.
