Blue Forest Banshee by PlaidDragon

Part 67

After eating, Teal and I lay down again, he on one sofa, me on the opposite. We talked softly for a while, mostly about me. Nothing would do but I had to tell him about Wyverns, and Were-Dragons, and Great Dragons and the Lesser Dragons.

"But you feel so familiar to me," he murmured at one point. "That's what I find confusing."

"My father was a Banshee," I admitted.

He stared at me in amazement. "Really! What Clan was he from?"

Then I had to admit that I didn't remember the name of the Clan, just that the location was beautiful and the Clan members were kind to me.

"I'll expect you to know that by the time I come to visit Duo," he snorted. "Banshees need to know where they came from, however many generations removed that may be."

Hell, if it would help convince Duo to love and trust me, I would find a genealogist to trace every damn branch of both of my parents' clans.

The baby awoke before dawn, whining a bit, but quieting immediately when Teal picked her up.

He went about feeding and changing her, and I went to check on Duo.

It was vaguely worrying that he hadn't awakened earlier, but I found him just beginning to stir, still wrapped comfortably around a pillow.

"Hey, Banshee," I murmured as I sat beside him. "Are you going to let us plot against you all day?"

"Eh...?" Purple eyes fluttered open and he blinked at me in confusion.

"Teal and I have been awake for hours and Dael just woke up."

He sat up with a gasp. "Oh, no! I thought it was a nightmare..."

"It is, honey; it is that..." said Teal from the doorway. "But we'll survive. Somehow." He carried Dael in his arms and managed a bright tone in spite of the shadows in his eyes.

Duo was off the bed and into his arms in a heartbeat. I found something else to occupy my attention, feeling like an interloper at that moment, as they commiserated once again.

After a few minutes, Teal said heartily, with only the faintest hitch in his voice, "Okay. Who's up for a bath?"

Obviously, Dael understood; she squealed and clapped her hands together and began babbling happily.

"Well, that's one!" Teal laughed. "Anybody else?"

"I'll join you," I offered.

Duo hesitated. "Won't they...?"

Teal glared at him. It was nearly as good as my glare. "Don't be absurd! You may not be an 'official' member of the Clan, according to them, but you're still my guest, and you can go anywhere I go!"

I smirked. I detected the scent of an in-your-face moment in the offing. Duo grinned and seemed to push away his fears.

"I could use a bath," he grinned. "And my hair's a mess."

"With that much of it, I'm not surprised!"

Duo started to reply then noticed the large piece of furniture still blocking the door. "Um... Would that have anything to do with the windows being locked?" he asked slowly looking at me from the corners of his eyes.

"Mmm... Possibly," I hedged not meeting his glance.

"Aw, man! Heero, you were supposed to wake me if someone tried to come in!"

"Was I?" I asked innocently.

"You said you would! You promised!"

"No... I acknowledged your request. I never promised to honor it."

Hands on his hips, he narrowed a glare at me. "You sneaky lizard!"

Teal was looking back and forth between us, frowning slightly. "We had company?"

I shrugged. "In a manner of speaking. I dealt with it and took steps to make sure it wouldn't be repeated."

Gone suddenly pale, Duo stepped close to his cousins.

Teal nodded slowly. "Did they leave a name?"

"She was rather occupied with issuing commands to me and untangling herself from that plant outside the kitchen window." I lifted one eyebrow. "We did not introduce ourselves."

Teal snorted, trying not to laugh outright. "Ha! Serves her right! You wouldn't care to describe her, would you, Heero? I've always believed in knowing who I'm going up against."

I brought up a picture of the female Banshee in my mind. "Not young, but not ancient; vital, used to being obeyed; a good bit of power. Dark blonde hair, a heavily patterned dark grey sweater and lots of silver jewelry."

His lip curled in a silent snarl. "Well, that settles the matter of whether I stay or go."

"Teal?" whispered Duo anxiously.

"Mika," Teal growled. "Never delegate what you can have more fun doing yourself." He hooked his free arm around Duo's waist. "No, sweat, sweetheart; I am so ready to engage with her, it's not even funny!"

Duo looked more confused than enlightened. I stepped into the breech.

"And Mika is...?"

"Our Matriarch."

Ah. And she didn't know that Duo was here.

"How much trouble can she cause you, after we're gone?" I asked. No Matriarch worth the title would create a scene in front of a stranger, especially at a memorial, but after... There was no limit.

"Almost none," Teal replied grimly. "I'll contact my mother's Clan when we come from the bathes, and let them know we're coming. We'll be out of here in two days."

"But Teal," cried Duo sharply; "won't you come with us? The Castle has guest rooms!"

Teal hooked one arm around Duo's neck, drawing him in close to kiss his cheek. "We'll come, sweetheart, but not right now." Green eyes met purple, and he seemed to be searching for something from Duo. "I feel a need for the other lady in my life right now... Do you understand, Duo?"

My Banshee looked as if he would like to argue, but he didn't. Instead he wrapped his arms around Teal and held on for a long minute, his face hidden against Teal's shoulder.

"Sorry," he murmured finally. "That was selfish. But I want to know where you're going!" he demanded. "If you're going to be there long, I want to come visit." He hesitated. "If I'm allowed..."

Teal gave him a gentle shake. "Of course, you're allowed! Merry Brook will adore you. Come on; enough of this! Let's get down to the bathes before everyone else has the same idea."
