It had been weeks since Duo'd heard anything about the other pilots and she was getting antsy for answers. She'd been told that she was to meet one pilot, but in watching the news she'd discovered that there were four, other than herself, running about wreaking havoc. Who was her partner and when would they meet? Add to it that she was stuck in a cabin in the middle of nowhere and she'd received no missions in the last 2 weeks and you have one very bored and hyper active Duo looking for mischief.
"Like there is anything for me to get into way out here!" she griped to herself. "That pompous windbag up there in the colonies oughta've at least given me some games to play on my laptop, but no.... 'the hard drive space is reserved for mission information only, I will not allow it to be used for inane, mind-numbing games.' Bah! Grumpy old man!"
Still looking for something to do, Duo decided to try and catch some rays before the sky clouded over. She gathered her things together, snagging a towel from her satchel and some SPF 15 (no sense burning herself), and headed up to the small sun deck on the roof of the cabin. Laying out the towel and her sunbather necessities, Duo proceeded to spread the lotion over her creamy skin. She lay back on the over used rag of a towel, plugged her headphones in, and proceeded to bask in the glow of the noon-day sun.
Heero was irritated. He'd arrived on Earth and integrated into the school system upon arrival. It wasn't a bad experience, except for one nuisance: Relena Peacecraft. The girl had found him on the beach after he'd crashed his Gundam into the ocean and since then had been pestering him in anyway she possibly could; which included following him around and trying to get him to like her.
He'd been at the school for about a week when he received a message from Dr. J stating that he was to partner up with pilot 02 as soon as said pilot arrived at the school. What the message did not say was how the pilot would make himself known.
"Hn. How's the guy gonna know I'm here? It's like finding a needle in a haystack. Damn, this is gonna be difficult. Damn that Dr. J for never allotting me the necessary information," Heero muttered. Suddenly, his laptop beeped signaling another incoming message. Heero opened it.
It read:
"All perimeters in place. You will be assigned to show
the new student, Pilot 02, around the school as soon
as he arrives. Take the next week to get to know Pilot
02 so that you can work closely as a team. You will be
assigned missions together from here on out. J."
"Leave it up to the mad scientist to know that I am thinking and answer my questions," Heero grumbled. He half expected another message saying, 'I heard that.' But none came.
Duo sat at her laptop reading the latest message. She was getting irritated as she read, not at the message contents, but at the strap of her bikini which kept sliding down her shoulder. She cursed the strap in a few languages before giving up and continuing to read the message.
"Mission: Infiltrate Romefeller High School as a new student. You are already registered. Your alias is Angel Maxwell. Pilot 01 will be your guide upon entrance. You are expected no later than Wednesday. Good luck, Duo. G."
She stared at the screen. "Wednesday! That's tomorrow! Good thing RHS isn't that far away! I'll still be riding all night," she said standing up to pack. "Yeash! Angel? Oh well.... at least he tries." She smiled fondly thinking of the old man who had been her mentor and caretaker since she was 8. She was still irritated about the no video games rule, but didn't feel like ruining her good mood.
Quickly, she disconnected her computer and stowed it in her bag. After taking a quick shower, she grabbed her gray parachute pants and a black tank top from her duffel, pulling them on quickly. She sat down on the bed, taking a breather as she pulled her socks and followed by her black combat boots. She looked around the room, checking for forgotten items. She gasped as she noticed her silver locket hanging from the bed post.
"Oh God! Mustn't forget that!" She cried, clasping the chain around her neck. She affixed her communicator/watch to her wrist and slung her bags over her shoulder. With a final glance about the room, she switched out the light and locked the door. "And off I go!" she sing-songed as she tied her duffel to the back of her motorcycle. She climbed on the bike, satchel on her back, and revved the engine before speeding off to her destination.
Having been forewarned by J, Heero wasn't a bit surprised when the office called him up to show a new student around. But he was surprised to find that the new student was a girl. He introduced himself politely under the intense scrutiny of the Principle before leading the girl off to see the campus.
Once they were out of the office, the girl smiled and turned to him, her violet eyes smiling. "I'm Angel Maxwell," she said, dropping her duffel to the ground and sticking her hand out in greeting. He gripped the hand and she shook his firmly. "Nice handshake," she grinned.
Heero looked her up and down, assessing her. She was beautiful. Large violet eyes and a long rope of golden-brown hair streaked with sun-kissed red. He noted that she hadn't had time to change into her RHS school uniform, so she was dressed in casual clothing. A black tight black turtle-tank that showed off her bust nicely. Baggy gray parachute pants and well-worn black combat boots adorned her lower half. "Wings..." he said, initiating the command phrase.
"Of a dove and death to those who see me," she replied cheerfully, her sensual mouth curving into a grin.
"I expected a boy," he told her flatly.
She shrugged and stuck her nose in the air in mock indignation. "I'm fully capable of completing any mission given to me, thank you!" She said, then her face softened and she laughed lightly. "Look, man, if you wanna talk about that stuff, I suggest we do it in private.... not out here where anyone can get an earful, ne?"
Heero nodded and lent down to pick up the duffel.
"I can get it," she told him. To prove this he slung the heavy bag over her shoulder with ease. They dropped her stuff by her dorm room and Heero proceeded to show her around campus.
The tolling of a bell alerted them that dinner was being served at the café.
"We'd better hurry if, Angel, we want to get anything good," Heero told her.
"Duo," she said.
"What?" Heero blinked at her.
"My name. It's Duo, not Angel. That's just my alias for the school."
Heero looked at her then nodded. "Let's go."
"Oh, man! Am I stuffed!" Duo said, pushing her plate away and leaning back in her chair. "I haven't eaten that good in ages!"
"Hn."
"Are all the meals like this around here?" Duo asked, eyes round. "I really could get used to this!"
"Baka."
"Eh?" Duo looked at him confused. "Ba... ka...?" she said, separating the syllables.
"It's Japanese."
"Yeah, well, wha does it mean?" Duo asked, giving him her best 'no duh it's Japanese, now tell me what you just called me or I'll kick your ass' look. It didn't work. Sighing, she sat back and proceeded to look about the café. "Whelp! I'm done!" she said, scooting back from the table. "I'm gonna head back to my room and take a nice long shower! See ya tomorrow, Heero." And with that she left.
"On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross; The emblem of suffering and shame; And I love that old cross where the dearest and best; For a world of lost sinners was slain," Duo sang as she combed her hair. That long shower had taken away all the aches and pains of her all-night ride and washed away the grime of her travels. Now clean, she felt happy and relaxed as she leaned against the headboard of her bed and ran her fingers through her soft brown tresses.
"Hmmm," she mused aloud to herself. "He seems nice enough.... but jeez does he need to add some words to his vocabulary!" She chuckled to herself, imagining the boy talking about as non-stop as she herself did. "On second thought...."
"Class we have a new student. Please introduce yourself," the teacher said, indicating that she step forward.
Duo looked out at the class and smiled when her eyes caught sight of Heero. "Angel Maxwell, glad to make your acquaintance!" She chimed cheerfully. The teacher nodded and asked her to take a seat, pointing to the vacant one in front of Heero. Smiling she gracefully made her way to the desk and sat, smoothing her skirt under her so it would not wrinkle. She could feel everyone's eyes on her; the boy's admiring glances and the girl's friendly ones.... except for one.
Over her left shoulder she could feel the eyes of one girl glaring a hole in her back. She didn't like that gaze one bit and decided to do something about it. When they class was given a small recess, she turned to look at the girl.
"Hi, I'm Angel. What's your name?" Duo asked cheerfully, smiling at the blue eyed girl with dishwater blonde hair.
"Relena Peacecraft," the girl said, giving Duo the impression that the name should mean something. Which to her it didn't.
Duo was about to try and talk to the girl, but Relena had turned away and was chattering on about something to a girl with short, curly brown hair. Shrugging, Duo turned to Heero.
"'Lo! And how are you this fine day?" Duo asked him.
"Hn."
"I'll take that as an `I'm fine, and you?'. I'm doin' great! See I'm making new friends!" Duo indicated the turned back of Relena Peacecraft and she could have sworn she heard Heero snicker. Smiling, she babbled on to him about nothing until the teacher brought their attentions back to the lecture.
"Angel?"
Duo turned around to find a group of four girls standing behind her. "Yes?" she asked.
"Hi, I'm Mimi. We were wanting to make you feel at home here," Mimi smiled, her golden hair shining in the sun. "This is Kari, Beth, and Chez."
"Nice to meet you guys," Duo smiled.
"Have you already been shown around campus?" When Duo nodded, Mimi continued. "So, what class do you have next?"
"Um," Duo looked at her schedule. "Phys. Ed."
"Let me see," Mimi took the paper from Duo and looked it over. "Looks like we have lunch and sixth together! Great!"
The other girls took their turns comparing schedules and Duo ended up having at least one class with each of them, including lunch.
"Well," Mimi said, still smiling, "I guess the next time we see one another will be lunch. Till then!" Mimi waved as they parted for their separate classes.
Duo sat on the bleachers looking boredly out over the basketball court where the boys were playing. How she wished she could be out there with them. She'd always loved basketball, and just about any other sport, but she'd only been allowed on girls' teams and, frankly, those sucked. All the prissy, pouty girls complaining over a couple of bruises. Hrmph.
"Look out!" someone shouted, shocking Duo out of her musing. But not soon enough.
Duo opened her eyes to find herself staring at an unfamiliar ceiling. "W-where am I?" she asked the ceiling.
"In the nurse's office," a slightly nasal voice answered. She heard footsteps then felt a calloused hand on her brow. "You got hit in the head with a basketball," Heero said bluntly.
"Oh," she said, trying to turn her head causing pain to race threw her skull. "Ow."
"Hn. Baka," Heero said, moving into her line of sight.
"Eh, Heero? What are you doing here?" she asked.
"I brought you here."
"Why?"
"You were hurt, unconscious. You could not bring yourself."
"No, why you? Why didn't someone else?"
Heero shrugged, the movement elegant in it's mechanicalness. "I just did."
"Oh.... thanks," Duo said, smiling slightly.
"Of all the--!" Duo yelled, pacing back and forth behind Heero with an ice pack to her head. "Are they nuts?!"
"Hn," Heero grunted, rereading the message.
"My information was slightly off. My mistake for assuming that Pilot 02 would be male. In light of this revelation, we, Professor G and I, have decided on a cover story. Your orders are to pretend to become a couple so that you may work closely and not draw attention. J."
Duo stared at the screen. It wasn't that she didn't like the idea of being in a relationship with Heero; he was, after all, gorgeous and perfect... and somewhere, deep inside, a kind and gentle person.... he just had a hard time showing it. Duo secretly smiled at the thought of them together. But the reason she was mad was that she was being forced into it. Ordered to be, or pretend to be, his girlfriend. Ordered! She figure this was G's idea, he always liked trying to pull little stunts like this. Sighing, she plopped down on the floor beside Heero's chair. "So do we accept?"
"Hn. Of course."
Duo sighed again. She'd learned over the past day or so that Heero was the Perfect Soldier, everything and anything for the mission. She figured that was why he'd been the one to take her to the nurse.... but secretly hoped it was more than just that. "Ok, so how do we go about becoming a couple? It'll seem weird if we just showed up as one, suddenly, outta nowhere."
"............. Valentines' is coming up."
Duo blinked. Why hadn't she thought of that? She smiled, leave it to the Perfect Soldier to come up with a plan instantly. "Cool. It's, what, a week away? Plenty of time for you to `fall for me,'" she jibed.
"Hn."
