The Paths We Choose by Danyale

Part Three: Destiny Beckons...

A slow, languorous awakening... The mists of sleep drifting back into the recesses of the mind, waiting for another night, another opportunity to shroud consciousness...

Duo Maxwell burrowed deeper into the warmth that surrounded and embraced him, rather deliberately ignoring all signs that it was nigh past time to wake, until gentle hands started to caress the length of his back. He started slightly, coming to full alertness instantly as his violet eyes flared open, and he found himself staring into familiar, dazzling cobalt blue eyes.

Duo blinked, his expression a study in incredulity.

Heero cherished the moment - it was the first time he'd ever seen his loud-mouthed partner startled into speechlessness. "Ohayo," he murmured, saying something if only to fill in the silence.

The American was quick to recover his natural equilibrium and aplomb. A slow, familiar, slightly lopsided smile graced his mouth as he propped himself up on one elbow and looked down at Heero. "Good morning yourself, Heero," he said lightly, "To what do I owe the honor of waking up with you in my bed?"

"I found you here, fast asleep. I thought it best not to disturb you. And, this is not *your* bed. It's mine. You fell asleep in *my* bed, in *my* room."

Duo blinked again, then looked around frantically, as if only just remembering where he was. "Oh hell," he muttered under his breath, averting his gaze. "I wonder how I managed that."

Heero had the grace not to chuckle - at least not aloud. But there wasn't much to laugh about anyway. So much hung between them - unanswered questions and broken faiths... tension built upon betrayal... He wanted to say something - wanted to tell Duo it didn't matter... that they could simply put it behind them and move on, that they could still make something good of it - a second chance for both of them, but the words simply couldn't come. How could words ever be enough to tell Duo that he meant more than the world, than life itself to him... that he would forgive the most horrendous sins if only he could keep Duo by his side forever?

But it was Duo who spoke first. "I'm sorry," the long-haired pilot said simply, his voice quiet, eyes focused on some invisible spot on the bed sheet. "If we... it wouldn't happen again - I didn't realize you'd be hurt by it."

Heero inhaled sharply, then nodded, just once. Duo was so near - he could feel the warmth of his body - yet so very far, sitting stiffly in the bed as if he expected to be hit, or at the very least, pushed away.

And for once, Heero did not live up to Duo's expectations. "I forgive you," the Wing pilot murmured the words that would begin the healing process for both of them, then reached out to draw Duo into his arms again.

The long-haired pilot was tense at first - how could forgiveness be so simple...? - but all it took was an affirming nod from Heero, and Duo relaxed visibly - almost melting into Heero's embrace.

They cuddled back down together and after a few moments of staring at each other, Duo broke the silence. "Where's Relena?" he whispered. "You haven't been with her, have you?"

Heero chuckled lowly, recognizing the shielded glitter in Duo's violet eyes. The American pilot was sweet and funny when his jealousy got the better of his nonchalant facade. "As long as she's nowhere near, it doesn't matter where she is." He held on to Duo tightly. "Anything else you want to ask?" he asked his lover, his lips curving into a rare smile.

"Yes," Duo replied with his usual damnable frankness and a positively wicked grin. "When are you going to kiss me?"

"Now..." His voice was soft, then Heero leaned in and covered Duo's mouth with his own.

Perhaps it was Heero who deepened the kiss... or perhaps it was Duo, but it became a moot point moments later, as Duo surged forward, pushing Heero down onto his back. Long gold-streaked chestnut hair spilled forward like a silken waterfall as Duo smiled with sweet tenderness down on his startled lover. "Let me do this for you. Please?"

He could have broken free at anytime - Duo simply wasn't strong enough to hold him down, but Heero only clung to his beautiful lover, trailing kisses across Duo's jaw until he reached his ear. "Whatever you want, koi. Anything..." You are my life... My whole life...

Duo's smile was like the opening of the heavens, the pouring of golden sunshine upon the earth. His kiss was unexpectedly gentle; for that endless moment in time, they shared the same breath that gave life to their bodies. Heero felt a hand on his own, fingers entwining with his. That was exactly as it should be. The simple, loving touch reassured him more than any blatantly passionate embrace would have done.

Here was completion. Here in Duo's slight weight on him, his hair spilling down around him, like a tent, shielding and protecting him. He curled his hand around Duo's neck and pulled the American down to him for a long, drugging kiss. Duo moaned slightly at the feel of Heero lying beneath him, and pressed himself harder still against him, his hands running over Heero compulsively. He could feel the movement of Heero's muscles shifting under his skin, steel and velvet, his companion, his lover. The Japanese pilot moaned, pushing against Duo's caressing hands. Yes, touch me right there... His chest heaved and he drove his nails into his palms, striving for some measure of control, of rational thought.

The long-haired young man trailed kisses over Heero's body, lying there beneath his hungry mouth. He wanted to touch him, to stroke him, and his hands explored every inch of Heero, his mouth following. The Wing pilot felt lips on his collarbone, his stomach, his thigh... before they finally closed in on the very heat of his desire...

It was the end of all Heero's pretenses of self control. With a hoarse groan he buried his fingers into the silken chestnut hair, lifting his hips and grinding closer to that hot mouth assaulting him with delicious torment. Duo's exquisite torture pushed him closer and closer to the edge until he thought he could bear it no longer.

He was writhing beneath Duo's warm, soft velvet mouth and clever, teasing fingers. His body was on fire, ignoring any attempt on his part to bring him back to reason. He was burning for Duo's touch and could not get enough of it. Duo exploited his every weakness until he thought he would die from need of him, his entire universe reduced to his exquisitely beautiful, utterly perfect, violet-eyed lover.

How can you do this to me, he wondered dazedly, his breathing harsh. How can you make me weak and filled with desire almost to the point of tears? Duo felt Heero tremble, that glorious, powerful body quivering and yielding in his arms... Heero's moan was the sound of searingly exquisite pleasure, of rampant desire on the edge of perfect fulfillment.

"Duo." His voice was so thick he probably wouldn't have recognised it, even if he hadn't been half-delirious. The emotions surging through his veins were intoxicating. No fevered fumbling this, but something heated, fierce, insatiable. "I need you. Now..." The sentence trailed off into a deep groan.

Duo could not hold out much longer either. He needed this too... they both needed this...

"I love you," he whispered... and then there was no longer any need for words...
