Rising by Erin Cayce

Part Four

///Heero ripped Duo's restraining hands off his arm and threw the smaller boy away from him, watching to be sure that he wouldn't move from where he sprawled on the floor. Then he turned back to the slowly stirring, black-haired figure huddled against the wall, and lifted his gun again.

Bang. "You're dead," he told the slumped form. He tossed the gun aside, and bent to close the staring black eyes.

He heard Duo rising, and heard the slow faltering steps; then he felt the cold steel of the pistol's muzzle against his skull. "Why?" came the shaken whisper. "What did he do to you, Heero?"

"Back away, Duo. Don't make me hurt you."

"Why, Heero? Why! Damnit, turn around and look at me and tell me why you killed him!"

Heero inched his hand down over the corpse's chest, feeling for the familiar lump. "Why?" he repeated. "It was the mission. That's why."

"But--but--" Duo was stunned; the muzzle began to slip. "What about friendship, loyalty? Trust! For Christ's sake--"

Heero closed his fingers around Wufei's gun, and in one swift motion drew it free of the stained white coat, turned, and fired point-blank into Duo's abdomen. Duo stumbled back, his face white and his eyes wide and blank, and fell to one knee; Heero stood, and fired again.

"Bang," he said softly, wondering at the heaviness constricting the left side of his chest, where his heart was... "You're dead, Duo."///

Heero woke abruptly.

He was sweating, but his body shook with chills and tears blurred his vision. His heavy gasping was the only sound in the darkness of his bedroom.

He rolled over and grabbed his phone. He dialed as quickly as his trembling fingers allowed. "Pick up, damn it," he whispered.

On the seventh ring, a sleepy voice answered. /"Hello?"/

"Duo... "

There was a sleepy pause. /"Heero?"/

"Duo, I need... "

/"Heero? Are you okay?"/

"Help me, Duo."

He heard movement on the other end of the line, as Duo sat up and turned on a light. /"What's wrong?"/

Just hearing Duo's voice was calming him, reassuring him that he hadn't done those horrible things in his dreams.

/"Heero? Is it the nightmares again? Heero? You still there?"/

He swallowed hard. "Yeah. I'm here."

/"Heero? I'm sorry about walking off earlier. You're not too upset, are you?"/

"Duo... "

/"Yeah?"/

"I'm sorry. For making you mad."

There was another short pause. Then, with great affection, Duo said, /"It's okay, man."/

"You're my best friend. I wouldn't ever hurt you."

/"I know."/

"I'd never, ever hurt you, I swear."

/"Heero. Please. I know you don't want to hear this... Talk to someone, okay? Tell someone about these dreams."/ Duo's voice was concerned, husky with worry. /"Dreams don't mean that you're a bad person, and I know you'd never hurt me, man; but I want you to talk to someone about the dreams so that *you* aren't getting hurt. Do you understand? Heero, are you listening? It doesn't have to be a psychologist, just the school counselor or even a teacher... just talk to someone, so you can stop having these nightmares. Okay? Heero?"/

Very slowly, Heero hung up, without answering, then lifted the phone and left it off the hook so that Duo wouldn't be able to call back. He lay down, and pulled his covers up to his chin.

*I swear*, Duo. I would never kill you. Because I... because I l...
