Noin groaned loudly as her cell phone began ringing. She definitely did not want to be disturbed right now. Her dreams of winning the season had ended with Yuy's victory that afternoon, and although she was happy for Heero and Duo, she was still being consoled rather nicely at the moment by her mechanic.
"Aren't... you going... to get... that?" Sally asked in between kisses.
Noin glared at her but then grabbed the infernal device from the nightstand "Yeah?" She practically yelled into it.
"You need to get to the hospital. Heero was just involved in a hit-and-run outside the track," came a familiar voice.
Noin sat up in the bed. "Wufei?"
The mechanic sighed heavily. "Yes. I'm on my way to Mercy now. Duo is already there, but he's going to need us. Heero was in bad shape."
The dark-haired woman nodded and then realized he couldn't see her. "Of course. We're on our way," she said before hanging up. She stared at the phone for a moment and then quickly began getting dressed.
"What's wrong?" Sally asked.
"Yuy was hit by a car on the street. We have to get to the hospital."
Sally flew into action herself then, pulling on jeans and a tee shirt. "Do they have any idea what happened?"
Noin shoved her feet into her tennis shoes. "I don't know. I just can't believe this is happening again."
A reassuring hand gripped her own. "If there's anyone who can beat the odds, it's those two. I never would have thought that they would become friends, let alone lovers. There's a bond between them, Lu. I think it's strong enough to keep Heero with us."
"I hope so," Noin said softly, turning worried blue eyes towards her. "If not, we might just lose Duo too."
Determined gray eyes met hers. "Then let's see what we can do to make sure that doesn't happen."
Relena held Hilde's hand as they sat in the back of the cab. "He'll be all right," she soothed.
Hilde sighed. "I swear, Rel, Duo won't be able to handle it if he loses Heero. I know him. Solo dying nearly did him in. If Heero..."
"He won't," Relena interrupted her.
Something in her voice made Hilde look at her, and the fierce expression on her lover's face surprised her. "We don't know that. It's a possibility that we have to face."
Relena looked down at their joined hands. "We have to think positive," she countered. "Heero will fight with everything in him to stay alive. I think his love for Duo is stronger than any physical injury he could have."
"You're such a sap," the dark-haired girl said, but there was tiny smile on her face.
The blonde smirked back. It had been her intention. "I know, but sometimes sap is all we have to hold onto. I'd rather be sappy and have hope than crying without it."
Hilde leaned her head on the other girl's shoulder, closing her eyes. "Me too."
They sat in silence for a moment until Relena decided her lover needed another bit of reassurance. "Besides, Heero knows Duo will kick his ass in the afterlife if Heero dies on him, and I think he'll avoid that at all costs."
Hilde chuckled. "Duo can be quite... demonstrative of his feelings, can't he?"
Relena kissed the dark-haired driver's hair, nuzzling it with her cheek. She knew how hard this was for Hilde. Duo was one of her closest friends. "Yes, he can. Then again I think we all should be. You never know when..." Her voice broke off suddenly as emotion overwhelmed her. She didn't want to think of being in Duo's position.
"I can see him taking Heero's harp and breaking it over his head," Hilde interjected, seeming to understand where the other train of thought had been leading them. "Duo would be so pissed off too because even though he'd want to cuss Heero out, the words would be edited for their heavenly audience."
Relena laughed at that, relieved that Hilde was trying to keep their spirits up. "Maxwell in PG? That's scary."
Hilde chuckled as she pulled away, her dark blue eyes shining with mischief. "He would be yelling, 'Darn it, Heero! What the heck is wrong with you? You freakin' die on me and then expect me to deal with this stuff? I don't think so, you punk! Your butt is so mine'..."
The blonde team owner snickered, her mind painting in Duo's disgruntled expressions at being censored. "And Heero would be muttering words in Japanese that Duo couldn't understand, frustrating him even more. The angels would have to separate them until they calmed down."
They smiled at each other, but then their mirth faded. Hilde collapsed against Relena again, her voice becoming thick. "It can't happen, Rel. It just can't."
Relena held her tight, wishing with all her might that she could make it all right. "I know," was all she could say.
Trowa walked into the waiting room with Quatre beside him. They saw Wufei speaking with Anne in quiet tones, obviously due to Duo resting in one of the chairs nearby. The brown-haired mechanic looked over at his lover and saw the blond's eyes taking in the scene, assessing the situation as being under control before he relaxed a little. Trowa gave a mental sigh of relief since Quatre had been extremely upset on the drive over.
"Barton. Winner," Wufei greeted them softly as they came up to him and Anne.
"How is he?" Quatre asked in a hushed tone.
"There hasn't been any word yet," Anne replied. "He's still in surgery."
"Well, that could be a good thing," Trowa remarked. He then looked over at Duo. "How is he dealing with this?"
"Better than expected actually," the woman responded. "I was just telling Wufei about the talk I had with him." She hesitated for a moment and then continued, "I guess I should tell all of you what I know before Howard gets here. I don't want him to be more upset than he probably already is right now. You can tell him later."
Wufei frowned. "What are you talking about?"
She took a deep breath. "Treize was responsible for the accident."
Trowa felt Quatre stiffen beside him before the blond asked in a strained voice, "How?"
Anne met their gazes unflinchingly. "Treize was waiting for me in my hotel room tonight. I happened to arrive without him noticing me, and I overheard him setting it up. He didn't indicate Heero's name, but he mentioned a 'braided mechanic', and we all know whom he was referring to. He was angry because Duo refused his offer to join their team... and his bed."
"That son of a bitch!" Wufei grated out, trying to keep his voice down so as not to disturb Duo. "Where is he?"
"Probably still at the hotel," she replied, "but I don't think you should..."
"He's interfered with people I love for the last time," Wufei cut in.
Anne shook her head. "Zechs went over there, Wufei. I don't know what he's got planned, but you might be walking into something that you shouldn't be."
"Then I guess I'll just have to take my chances," the Chinese mechanic stated, refusing to be swayed. He then looked at Trowa and Quatre. "Call me as soon as you know something."
"We will," Trowa assured him. He knew it was pointless to try to stop the other mechanic. Wufei would see justice whether it was a good idea or not.
Quatre grabbed Wufei's arm before he walked past. "Don't let your anger blind you to what's going on around you. Be careful. Treize is dangerous, and Zechs could be caught in the middle of all of this."
A terse nod was the only reply before Wufei walked out of the waiting area. Anne shook her head but then sat down in a chair that was some distance away from Duo to continue talking without waking him. "I'm sorry. I called Zechs as soon as I could to try to stop this from happening." Her brown eyes sought green and aqua ones for acceptance. "We were just too late."
Trowa watched as Quatre sat down beside her, the blond taking her hand in his. "You did what you could. No one could ask more than that. I'm sure Duo appreciated you being here for him."
Anne smiled at that. "He's an incredible young man. Heero is very lucky to have him."
"Blessed," Trowa corrected softly. "Heero is blessed to have him." He sat down with them, his reassuring hand going to Quatre's back even as the other boy comforted Anne.
Quatre leaned into the familiar caress. "They are blessed to have each other," he amended amiably. "I've never see two more passionate people when it comes to love... and racing."
"What happens if Heero can't race next week?" Anne asked.
Quatre sighed. "Heero has enough points for the championship unless Zechs finishes first in the race. Of course, the possibility of Zechs doing that are very good, so we should expect it. It's disappointing, but that's life on the track."
"I hate to say it, but it seems Treize has planned this perfectly," Trowa admitted.
"I just want Heero to be all right," the blond stated firmly. "I hate for Treize to win this way, but Heero is more important to me than some title."
"Of course, Cat, but you know how important it was to Heero to earn that honor for the team," the brown-haired mechanic reminded him. "He's going to be upset regardless."
"Well, the only way we could ensure that Heero wins is to find another driver who could race with Wing and be able to beat Zechs," Quatre retorted. "I don't know of anyone who would be willing to do that."
They fell silent then, no one knowing what to say in light of the situation. They didn't notice violet eyes open to regard them thoughtfully, their owner having overheard their conversation, only to retreat back into the darkness once again to consider the possibilities.
"Well, Zechs, this is a pleasant surprise," Treize purred as he let the blond man into the hotel room.
"I wanted to speak with you about my contract," Zechs replied evenly, ignoring the other man's suggestive tone.
Treize raised an eyebrow and then motioned for him to sit down in one of the chairs. "What is there to discuss?"
Zechs smiled icily as he propped his feet upon the table. "I'm resigning as your driver."
Treize laughed. "You can't do that unless you forfeit your rights to this year's pay. You know that."
"Not... necessarily," Zechs countered, his voice a silken thing. "In fact, I think I have some information for you that might be worth you letting me go without a fuss."
Treize raised an eyebrow. "Oh really? And what might that be?"
"Heero Yuy was struck down by a car tonight. He's in the hospital, possibly fighting for his life."
Treize gave him a bored look, but Zechs hadn't missed the pleased expression that had crossed the other man's face for a moment. "So? What does that have to do with me?"
Zechs smirked. "I know you had something to do with it."
"Such accusations," the team owner scolded. "Why would a businessman like myself do something like that?"
"Because Maxwell wouldn't fall into bed with you? Because you knew you couldn't win the championship unless Yuy was taken out of the way? Because you're a sadistic bastard that wants people to do what you want them to do, and if they don't, you want them to suffer? Take your pick," the blond offered.
Treize shook his head. "Oh, Zechs. You always entertain me, but none of that can be proven, and you know it."
"Anne overheard you make the call, Treize," Zechs replied, a small smile appearing on his face as Treize's mirth disappeared. "She walked in while you were on the phone and heard everything. She's willing to testify."
The team owner's blue eyes narrowed dangerously. "What game are you playing, Merquise?"
Zechs leaned back in his chair. "I want out, and so does Anne. If you agree, I'll give you an alibi for tonight."
Treize gave him a dark look. "I could easily deal with this problem myself."
"Ah, but that would be too suspicious, my dear Treize," Zechs replied smoothly. "I think you're best bet would be to give us what we want so you can go on with your life without any... complications."
Zechs could see the nervous twitch that always indicated Treize was upset. When the other man spoke, it was apparent in his voice as well. "If I were to take you seriously, you would still have to race next week. That point is non-negotiable."
"Agreed, but I want my contracts destroyed tonight or I won't deal."
"How do I know that you won't betray me after I do it?" Treize argued.
Zechs gave him a level look. "I'll sign a statement the day you sign the paperwork for the divorce. That's what Anne and I agreed upon, or she'll expose me to the press along with you if I don't do it."
"My, my, the little wifey seems to have developed a taste for larceny. I'm impressed."
Zechs shrugged. "I guess she figures this is her only chance. She and I have that in common at least."
Treize stood, apparently coming to a decision. "Then I guess you'll both have your chances." He went over to the desk and picked up the telephone, dialing an outside line. "Peterson? It's Treize. I know it's late, but I need for you to do something for me tonight. Dissolve all of the contracts between myself and Zechs Merquise except for this season's." He paused while a voice on the other end rattled off something in an agitated tone. "Yes, I'm sure. Send me a confirmation when it's done. If you get it done within the next fifteen minutes, there's a large bonus in your future." He hung up and then turned back around, giving Zechs a brilliant smile. "It shouldn't take him long. All of your contracts were electronically filed. Once Peterson deletes them, he'll send me an affidavit that will be legally binding. I'll file the divorce papers tomorrow, and we'll set up a date for you to meet with my lawyers."
Zechs returned the smile. "That's more than acceptable."
Treize turned away and walked over to the bar. "Well, now that that's settled, let's have a drink... for old time's sake at least?"
Zechs nodded. "Scotch neat."
Treize made them both a glass and then sat down in the chair opposite Zechs. "I have to admit, I never thought you'd turn your back on your friends just to be free of me."
"I guess old habits die hard," the blond driver replied softly. "I've always had to look out for myself."
"It's too bad that you decided to leave me, Zechs," Treize said. "We were always such a good team."
"Is that why you offered a position to Duo and Heero?" Zechs countered hotly.
Treize snorted. "Well, you were becoming difficult, my dear boy. I had to do something. Yuy and Maxwell would have be a nice addition to our... family. We could have raced two cars. You would have enjoyed the competition. And I'm sure getting Yuy in the sack would have been a nice benefit."
"He is quite handsome," Zechs admitted. "I can't say that I hadn't entertained ideas about him."
Treize grinned. "As did I. Hell, I wouldn't have minded having both of them at the same time. Maxwell is striking, and seeing them together would have been incredible."
"So why did you have Yuy taken out?" Zechs asked, his voice hinting nothing at the emotions surging inside him.
"Because I wanted to teach that mechanic a lesson," the team owner explained in a harsh tone. "Maxwell flat out refused me. I warned him what would happen if he crossed me. I guess he's learned the hard way."
Zechs regarded him for a moment and then said, "I suppose that's why they were guarding Wing so closely."
Treize laughed out right then. "Yes. It's quite humorous the pains that Maxwell went to all in order to keep Yuy safe... all to no avail. I knew he'd be expecting something on the track. That's why I had the accident happen on the street." The man smirked. "A stolen car involved in a hit-and-run was very convenient. The driver was an ex-con who had no qualms about taking out a Jap-faggot."
'And that is what I've been waiting to hear,' Zechs thought smugly, but before he could press the transmitter inside his pocket, there was a knock at the door.
Treize got up to answer it, and in the next moment, Zechs was shocked to see the man knocked across the room.
Heero blinked his eyes open. He felt incredibly light, like all the cares of the world had been lifted off him. He sat up and looked around, astonished when there was nothing but a grassy field of flowers as far as he could see. A light wind was blowing, and he could feel his hair being ruffled as it touched him. Where was he?
"Heero."
It was a familiar voice, and Heero turned to see someone he hadn't thought to see again any time soon. "Okaasan..." he breathed almost reverently.
The woman smiled, her dark brown eyes shining. "You have grown so much since I saw you last."
Almost as quickly as the desire to be in her arms was in his thoughts, Heero was there, the overwhelming feeling of being held again by his mother making him tremble. "I've missed you so much. You don't know how many nights I cried for you. I didn't want you to go."
Her embrace tightened. "I know, my son. I didn't want to go either, but I had to. Despite my absence, you have become a fine young man, Heero. I am so proud of you."
Heero felt tears running down his face. "Don't leave me again. Please...
"I've always been with you, Heero. Even though you couldn't see me, I was there in your heart, whispering my love to you, telling you to keep going on when you wanted to give up, giving you the confidence to be the man you are. I never left you, my son, not in the ways that mattered."
"Take me with you. I want to go with you," the Japanese boy pleaded. He didn't want to be abandoned again. All his life he had been alone, and feeling this love again was enough to make him not want to be without it.
"Are you sure? There is no going back once you leave this place. You are still young and have many things to experience in your life." She paused. "Do you really want to give that up just to be with me?"
Heero pulled away and looked around him again. There was something he was forgetting. He felt it in his soul, but he didn't know what it could be. He didn't even know where here was, and he didn't want to be by himself again. If he went with his mother, he would have her to comfort him, to be with him like it once was. The thought of feeling as free as he did at that moment for the rest of his existence was a wonderful one. He looked up at the woman who had loved him as a little boy and saw her longing for him to go with her, but he hesitated for some reason.
"I want to but..." He felt his heart ache at the thought of leaving, and yet he didn't want her to go without him either. "Will you read to me like you used to?" he asked, his voice small and uncertain.
She ran her fingers through his hair. "As much as you want me to. Is that what you want, Heero?"
Heero closed his eyes, trying to remember what he was leaving behind. When nothing came to him, he answered her in a wavering voice, "Hai."
Duo could hear the familiar voices around him, but he continued to keep his eyes closed. He just didn't want to deal with anyone until he found out how Heero was doing. He didn't know how long they'd been there, but it seemed like an eternity for him. Sitting there, waiting, not knowing if Heero was pulling through or not was a nightmare that seemed to have no end. Even though he'd nodded off earlier, he hadn't rested, and he was weary to his bones. He knew that everyone was worried about him. When Solo had died, he'd been a basket case for months, and they were afraid of that happening again.
He was afraid of it happening again.
He kept telling himself over and over again that everything was going to be all right. Heero would never leave him without a fight. Duo could imagine Heero battling his way back to him, overcoming every obstacle to keep his life. If anyone could beat death, it would be Duo's Japanese lover. The braided mechanic smiled at that thought. His mind drifted to the memory of their last lovemaking session of a day ago. It had been a hurried and messy affair, simply jacking each other off in the bathroom on the bus, but it had been hot and intense and... everything that Duo could ever want. Every time Heero touched him, it was like that. No matter what they did, just knowing that Heero wanted him made Duo feel like he could do anything.
Duo let the images fill him - the sight of Heero unzipping his own jeans slowly, pulling out his hardening member so Duo could see him as he stroked himself. Duo smirked as he recalled how he'd returned the favor, lowering his own jeans to his thighs so Heero could see his erection and groin clearly, Duo trailing his fingertips through the bed of curls there, rubbing himself temptingly. Heero had grabbed him in a matter of seconds, pulling them close as they'd kissed passionately. Then they had taken each other in hand and caressed the other until both of them exploded in strangled gasps and heady sighs of pleasure. Yes, it had been hurried and messy, but it had been damn good too.
Duo groaned thinking about it, but then managed to stifle his responses before he embarrassed himself in front of everyone. What would they think about him getting aroused in the middle of the blasted emergency room? He wanted to laugh out loud at what Heero would say to that, but he knew that it would lead to something else entirely, as emotionally strung-out as he was. Instead, he redirected his mind to the present. He was just getting ready to open his eyes and talk to the others waiting there with him when he heard a voice call out.
"Family for Yuy?"
Duo was up like a shot. He didn't even take in who else was in the room. All he could do was stare at the doctor standing there, his scrubs still on. "Yes? How is he? Can I see him?"
The doctor shook his head and Duo felt his heart drop to his feet. "I'm sorry... Mr. Yuy didn't make it."
Duo felt his world crash around him. "No... it can't be..."
"We tried to bring him back, but we just couldn't keep him stabilized. His heart just wouldn't..."
"No!" Duo cried louder, his body shaking. "I don't believe you! Heero is stronger than that. He wouldn't leave me. He promised, damn it!"
The doctor walked towards him. "Son, I know how hard it is to accept something like this, but there's nothing more we can do. He's gone."
"No!" Duo screamed. "I won't let him go!"
"You have to..."
"No!" Duo yelled, reason beyond him. "I won't let him go! He's mine. The lightning can't have him!"
"Sometimes we have to let go, son. Sometimes holding on is what keeps us from finding what our heart has always wanted. Let him go, Duo. It's the only way you're going to help Heero."
Duo shook his head, the tears flowing down his face. "I don't... understand..."
"It's the only way to dance in the thunderstorm with him, Duo... let Solo go... it's time to touch the lightning on your own without being afraid."
Duo felt the room spinning around him. What was going on? What did Solo have to do with this? He suddenly collapsed onto the floor, his hands coming up to his face, as he wailed, "No! Heero!"
