Duo watched Wufei closely. The black-haired boy had been sitting there alone for almost two hours; no one would approach him. The braided boy sighed in frustration. Didn't anyone understand that the other boy's harsh attitude was just his defense? Couldn't anyone see the anger and hurt behind those kohl eyes? He shook his head. Well, if no one else would take the time to notice, he would. Wufei needed someone, and who better than someone who understood the feeling of loss the way Shinigami did?
Wufei was lost in his own dark thoughts when he felt a hand rest lightly on his shoulder. He clenched his teeth in annoyance. How dare anyone disturb him! He turned to give the person a severe tongue-lashing when his eyes met surprisingly understanding violet ones.
"Hey, Wufei. Mind if I sit down?"
Wufei took in the calm demeanor of the other boy. Duo Maxwell was always rambunctious and loud, spouting nonsense and laughing at everything; the braided boy standing before him was nothing like that. He found himself nodding as the former Deathscythe pilot took the chair next to him.
"What do you want, Maxwell?" Wufei asked, not able to put as much disdain in his voice as he usually did when he spoke the other boy's name. His conscience reminded him that Duo had actually used his name properly for once.
"Just thought you might want someone to talk to. I know you think all I care about is a good time, Wufei, but if there's one thing I know about, man, it's guilt. I probably would understand better than you think."
Wufei stared at him. Guilt? What did he have to be guilty about? He'd killed Treize in battle. There was no reason to feel guilty for that. He'd vanquished a foe to end the war. He'd defeated his enemy with honor. Treize himself had deemed it the necessary outcome. Even as Wufei thought it, though, something inside twisted his heart a little, making him acknowledge the feeling he couldn't quite get rid of ever since the battle had ended.
"It's hard to accept winning a battle you think you should have lost," Duo continued when Wufei remained silent. He saw the other boy flinch at those words and knew he was on the right track. "Sometimes I wonder how I kept surviving when so many others didn't. I had to watch them all die, and all I can think sometimes is that it should have been me instead."
Wufei jerked his head around to glare at the other boy. "Never say that! You had to live, Duo. If you hadn't, more people would have had to die. Your life meant too much to have been thrown away, and now you can live in the peace their lives bought. If it hadn't been for you, for all of us, this war would still be going on."
Duo smiled sadly. "Yeah, you're right. So why are you sitting here alone, beating yourself up for doing something you had to do in order for that peace to become a reality?"
Wufei opened his mouth then shut it. Why was he? He thought about that feeling that seemed to keep overwhelming him every time he thought about Treize. Remorse? Regret? It wasn't quite guilt, but still, it wasn't something one should feel after such a battle. Why was he feeling it at all?
"I don't know."
Duo reached out and laid his hand on top of Wufei's on the table. "You do know, but you're afraid to face the truth, Wufei."
"How the hell would you know, Maxwell?" Wufei spat, pulling his hand away, yet trying to keep his voice down so as to not draw attention to them. "You don't even know me that well. What makes you think you understand how I feel?"
Duo didn't answer him directly, but his words showed the black-haired boy that he knew what the other boy was going through all too well. "I don't think about those who are dead as much as I do about those that are left behind. After a battle, all I can see are faces of possible wives and children of the men I've killed. They were innocent, and yet, I took everything from them the moment I took away those soldiers' lives." He paused for a moment, his eyes filling with tears as he stared into Wufei's. "I was an orphan, Wufei. How many orphans did I create with the swinging of that damned scythe?"
Wufei didn't know what to say. He suddenly realized that Duo was right; if anyone could understand him, it was the braided pilot sitting there beside him. He tentatively reached his hand out and covered the one Duo had laid on his just moments before.
"I had no one to come home to. Treize did."
Duo nodded. "Then instead of you sitting here, wishing you could take his place, maybe you should be comforting the one he left behind. Maybe together, you both can find peace."
Wufei looked into violet and spoke softly. "You hide this side of yourself too much, Duo. It's nice to know that you trust me enough to show it to me. I... thank you."
Duo smiled at him. "You're welcome." He took a deep breath then added, "Would you like for me to come with you? I'm willing, if you want me to. Might even make me feel better, actually."
Wufei nodded. "I would appreciate it if you would."
"The God of Death and the Last of the Dragon Clan on a comforting mission. If it wasn't so tragic, I think I'd laugh my ass off," Duo replied as he stood and wiped his eyes.
Wufei shook his head and began following the other boy through the lobby.
Treize was dead. The thought still brought tears to her eyes. Sitting in the hotel room alone, she pondered what her life was going to be now that the man she had pledged her existence to was gone. Where would she go? How could she go on without him? What would become of her now that everything she had fought for had come crashing down around her? Lady Une took a deep unsteady breath and let the tears fall down her face. Treize would not want her to give up. She had to keep going, even if only to honor his sacrifice. She had been strong for him; now she had to be strong for herself.
A knock at the door brought her out of her thoughts. Who could that be? Wiping the moisture from her cheeks, she made her way to answer it. As the door opened, she felt a thousand things go through her at the sight of the two young men who stood before her. It was pilot 02. And him.
"Lady Une, may we come in?" asked the braided boy, a tentative look on his face.
She didn't know what to say. There were so many things going through her mind right then as she looked at the other boy standing with pilot 02; anger, hatred, fear, relief, regret, love... oh yes, she still loved them, in spite of everything. After all, they were Gundam pilots, and they had won her affection long ago.
"Of course."
She turned from the door, trying to reign in all of the emotions coursing through her. She sat down on the bed and motioned for them to sit at the table in the room. The two boys looked at each other for a moment, then pilot 05 cleared his throat.
"I wanted to talk to you about Treize," the black-haired boy began, almost hesitantly. "I wanted you to know how he died."
Une closed her eyes briefly, willing herself to remain calm. Why was he here? She knew how Treize had died. What more could he tell her that she didn't already know? "I don't think that's necessary..."
"It is," he contradicted her smoothly. "Please, I know how... difficult this has to be for you, but I need to tell you, Lady Une. Treize would have wanted me to."
She noticed how pilot 05 looked at 02 again, seeming to take courage from him. Her mind chided her; she had to call them by their names now, not their Gundam pilot designations. Pilot 02 was really Duo Maxwell, and pilot 05... Wufei Chang. Une looked at them both before nodding slowly. If Treize would have wanted it, she could not deny him this.
Wufei took a deep breath. He hadn't known if the woman would agree to this or not, but he had to at least try. It was honorable, and if nothing else, Wufei wanted to be an honorable man. Thoughts of killing Treize without facing the woman who had loved him seemed to taint his honor, and the only way to reconcile those feelings was to try to comfort her. He looked again at Duo, taking strength from the other boy's presence. Then he looked into Une's light brown eyes and spoke softly.
"Even though I did not agree with Treize's viewpoints, and had to oppose him with my life, I admired his spirit and courage in the face of the enemy." Wufei paused, closing his eyes briefly before continuing, "He died honorably in battle. He even called me... his friend..." Wufei swallowed past the lump in his throat. "I didn't deserve that, but he graced me with it before he died. I wanted you to know that although I do not regret my actions, I regret that it had to happen."
"He respected you... Wufei," Une interrupted, feeling her heart break a little more at using his given name. The familiarity it suggested felt like a betrayal to the man the Chinese boy had taken from her, but she forced herself to meet this challenge... for Treize... for herself. "If there was anyone's hand... he would have wanted to... die at... it would have been... yours." The tears she had been holding back finally broke through, flowing freely down her face as she said those last words.
Wufei felt something grip his heart. He knew what it felt like to lose someone you loved, someone you respected more than anything in the world. Without even realizing what he was doing, he was by Une's side, pulling her into a comforting embrace. "I didn't think I would win. I didn't think I would win," he said over and over again as he held onto her and let his own tears fall silently down his cheeks.
Duo watched the scene unfold, feeling his own grief rise within him. He would never be able to comfort all of those his scythe had left bereft, but perhaps this was a way to begin the healing. This was what had been needed. He felt a bit of the guilt he carried relieved as he sat there. He had been right to interfere this time; it felt good to be right.
Wufei stroked Une's hair as words tumbled from his mouth. "I'm sorry it had to end this way, Lady. I'm sorry he had to die for peace to be achieved. I'm sorry I couldn't send him back to you."
"He knew, Wufei," Une choked out between sobs, unable to keep herself from clinging to him; he had become her last tie to the man she'd loved for what had seemed like an eternity. "He knew he wouldn't be coming back from that battle with you. He wanted to, but he knew he wouldn't."
Wufei pulled away and looked at her. "Did he say that? Did he tell you that?"
Une looked into his dark eyes, seeing the anguish mirrored there that she felt in her own heart. "No, but I could tell."
Wufei searched her face for something, not even knowing what he sought. Finally, he cupped her chin in his hand and asked the question he had been afraid to ever ask anyone. "Can you ever... forgive me?"
Several things fell into place within that moment for the former Oz Colonel. Une realized that the only way to let go of Treize, to begin her life over, was to find a way to accept the boy sitting beside her on the bed. Treize had seen something in Wufei, had known that there was someone worth seeing if a person only looked deeper inside the Chinese boy. Before she could think about it any further, she whispered breathlessly, "I already have."
Wufei couldn't believe what he had just heard. He felt relief flood him; all of the guilt and sorrow flowed away in the tide of release that those words had given him. One moment he was staring, unbelieving, into Lady Une's eyes, the next, he was pressing his lips against hers with tender emotion. His sense of reason was screaming at him that this was insane, to be kissing the lover of his former enemy, but something deep inside Wufei told him this was the rest of what he had come there for; there had to be a reckoning.
Duo was shocked at seeing Wufei kiss Une. He hadn't quite expected THAT reaction, but still... for some reason, it seemed right somehow. Maybe those two could find comfort in each other, find a way to overcome the sense of loss they both felt. As he watched the kiss deepen and become more passionate, he got up to leave discreetly. Reaching the door, he heard Wufei's voice call after him.
"Duo, don't go."
Duo stopped and turned back around. The look on Wufei's face made him blink in astonishment. "I just thought... well... you two seem to be... um... you don't need me... so..."
"Stay," came the one-word reply from the Chinese boy.
Duo started to open his mouth to protest, but Une cut him off. "Please."
Looking between the two of them, Duo wondered just what he had gotten himself into exactly. He finally just shrugged his shoulders and walked back over to the table to sit down. If they both wanted him there, he'd stay there. He noticed how they were both looking at him, and it suddenly felt a little too warm in the room.
"I need your help, Duo," Wufei admitted begrudgingly. "If this is going where I think it's going, I need you to..." the Chinese boy blushed and looked away.
Duo blinked. Surely, Wufei didn't mean... he looked over at Une, only to see her confirming what Wufei had been saying. "He's right, Duo. We need you here to help us get through this," she said softly.
Wufei looked at her, then seeing that she understood the situation, turned back to Duo. "You are a part of this, Maxwell. For it to be right, you have to... be involved. I... want you to... be here... with us..."
Duo gaped at both of them. "You want me to... um... watch... or actually be... with you guys..."
Wufei felt his face redden even more, but he wasn't going to back out of this - not when it was so important. "We want you to be with us. Do you... do you think you can... do that?"
Duo looked at them. It was crazy, absolutely fucking crazy, but never let it be said that something being crazy had ever stopped Duo Maxwell from doing what needed to be done. He sighed heavily then stood up facing them.
"What do you want me to do?"
Wufei motioned for Duo to join them on the bed. Silently, Duo complied, sitting where they could all see each other. Wufei didn't know quite how to proceed, but he had an idea of what he wanted to happen. It would be the beginning of a journey for the proud young Chinese man, but he felt that it would be good one. He looked at Une and gave her a small smile before turning to look at Duo.
"I... Duo... will you..." he paused, trying to muster the courage to actually say the words. "I want you to take me while I take her."
Duo's eyes widened. "You sure, Wufei? I mean... it's not like I don't want to or anything... it... it would be great to... um... do that... I just... are you sure?"
Une could see Wufei struggling to find words to explain what he needed, so she answered Duo for the other boy. "He's sure, Duo... and so am I. I somehow knew there was a kind of destiny between the three of us. When I set you free from the station, right before I was shot, I did so because I couldn't let you die. Somehow, I knew in my heart that someday we would not be enemies."
Wufei nodded in understanding. "Destiny can be cruel to the unsuspecting, but it can also be kind to those who see it for what it is. I think it's time we complete what began there."
Duo felt the weight of experience rest on his shoulders. Even though he hadn't been with many people, he still was far more 'skilled' in what was about to take place. They needed him to lead the way. He smiled at both of them, wanting them to see that he really was willing.
"First of all, we need some lubricant. Do you have anything we can use, Lady?"
Une smiled at his use of her honorific... Wufei had done it earlier, and Treize had done it so many times. "Yes. There are some scented bath oils in the other room."
"I'll get them," Wufei offered, getting up quickly to do so.
"Duo... I..." Une's voice trailed off, unable to find the words she wanted to say.
"It's okay," Duo said, trying to put Lady Une at ease. He placed a hand on her cheek and smiled. "And thank you... for saving us, I mean. I... didn't know it was you who did it."
Wufei entered the room again, listening carefully as he sat back down on the bed.
"I couldn't let you die. You all were so inspiring with the way you fought for what you believed in. To let you die at Tsuborov's hands... it would have been unjust."
"A woman who understands the concept of justice," Wufei commented happily, "is a woman who has the courage to live without regret."
"Then let us face justice together," Une replied softly.
"Perhaps we can find mercy in each other," Duo added, feeling something inside him break that he had been fighting for so long. Could this possibly be a way for him to find peace?
They undressed. It wasn't done with any attempt at seduction or foreplay, just the simple discarding of clothing as they faced their destiny together. Once naked, Une lay back on the bed as Wufei positioned himself between her thighs. Duo kneeled behind him, waiting.
Wufei looked down into Une's brown eyes and spoke in a broken voice. "I took him from you. Take from me what I have to offer in return, as retribution, as justice." With those words, he leaned down and claimed Une's lips in a fierce kiss. When they parted, Une looked up at him with tears in her eyes.
"Listening to him die in battle made me realize that the only just motivation for killing is to protect that which you love most. Please show me I didn't learn that too late."
Wufei ran a finger over her cheek. "So long as there's life, there's hope." He then turned his head to look at Duo, seeing that hope shining in those violet eyes.
At that moment, Duo knew why he was there. It was written so clearly in Wufei's eyes, the understanding and the acceptance that Duo hadn't known he needed. He heard the words fall from his lips without even knowing what he was saying until they were spoken.
"All my life, I never thought I deserved to be happy. I just want to be happy, for once, just for me, without having to fear hurting someone else to do it." His voice was shaking as he finished speaking.
Wufei leaned back and kissed Duo softly, expressing his openness to the situation. If someone would have told Chang Wufei that he would be kissing another boy that night, he would have used his katana to cut that person to pieces; now, it seemed so natural to claim the other boy's mouth with his own.
"You have always deserved to be happy, Duo," he said softly as their lips parted. "You try so hard to keep everyone else's spirits high. Think of yourself for once, and just enjoy... me." Wufei then turned back around to look down at the woman who was regarding them both.
Une had listened to every word and had once again been struck by the beauty of the young men on the bed with her. She watched as Wufei lowered his head to begin kissing her neck. As his soft lips brushed her skin, she allowed the tears to fall freely, bathing her in grief. Her hands reached up to touch him, caressing his shoulders as his mouth moved over her body.
Wufei felt Duo begin to slide his hands down his back. He knew the braided boy would have to prepare him before they could continue, and he was giving Duo a chance to do that by kissing the woman beneath him slowly, almost languidly. He felt Duo trail his fingers between his cheeks lightly, brushing over his entrance softly. He couldn't help but moan, his mouth on Une's skin. Duo pulled away for a moment, then a slick finger was pressing against Wufei's opening. The Chinese boy couldn't help but cry out as it entered him, gently probing at first, then moving in and out of his body in an even rhythm. He leaned forward to take Une's lips in a kiss as Duo added another finger.
Duo watched Wufei kissing Une, watched Une touching Wufei, and he was thankful that he was a part of it. His fingers moved in and out of Wufei's body, stretching him for Duo to take him. Duo had never thought he would ever be in this position with the former Shenlong pilot, but to know that he would soon be buried inside that tight heat was amazing... almost amazing as the fact that his feelings for Wufei went beyond that. He had always admired the other boy; now he knew there was a great affection there as well. By the time a third finger was inserted, Wufei was ready, and by the sound of Une's moans, she was too.
Une looked deeply into Wufei's eyes, panting lightly. "Please... I need you..."
Duo handed Wufei a condom he had retrieved from his jeans. Slipping it on, Wufei positioned himself at Une's entrance. "And I, you." With one swift movement, he entered her. The feeling was incredible, hot and moist, her muscles massaging his length.
"Yes!" she cried out, feeling that hardness as it filled her. Wufei thrust into her a couple of times before he stilled, Duo grasping his hips to get ready to take him.
Duo placed a second condom on himself, lubing it with the bath oil, before positioning himself behind Wufei. He leaned over the black-haired boy's back and said in a breathy voice, "Do not move until I tell you, Fei, okay?"
Wufei nodded... and then he was being penetrated. "Duo!"
Duo had prepared him well, but there was still a little pain, and Wufei felt tears in the corners of his eyes. He didn't move, hardly breathed, as Duo sheathed himself inside his body. Once the braided boy was completely seated, the three of them stilled. For a few moments, there was only the sound of their ragged breathing, then Duo pulled almost all of the way out of Wufei, pulling him partially out of Une, only to thrust back inside.
"Yes!" Wufei yelled, as he was impaled from behind and sheathed in front. He looked down at Une's face and saw the pleasure there. Then he heard Duo's voice, and it broke the last restraint within him.
Duo couldn't help but moan as his arousal was caressed by Wufei's inner walls. "Oh, Fei... so good..."
They moved, Duo dictating the rhythm, all three of them crying out, moaning, and yelling encouragement as they sought release... release from the pain, release from the guilt, release from everything they had become that they didn't want to be anymore.
Wufei reached down to begin rubbing Une's pleasure nub as he thrust into her, her enveloping wetness sending him into sensory overload as much as the feel of Duo's erection inside him. He wanted Une to come first, to be the one to set off the chain reaction of release. It didn't take long before she was arching against him, her cries signaling her climax.
"Yes! Yes! Oh Yes!" Une let the euphoria sweep though her, the heat expanding all over her body as she gave into the release she had needed. That warmth wrapped around her, comforting her in a way she had never expected. She felt Wufei harden even more as he plunged back into her and over the edge.
Wufei felt Une's muscles contract around him. With Duo thrusting into him so passionately, hitting a spot that was driving Wufei crazy, the Chinese boy could not keep from succumbing to the inevitable. The fire built until it exploded through him, burning away all the guilt and pain, leaving him yelling his passion as he came violently.
"Ahhhhh! Yeeeeessssss!"
Duo couldn't believe how good Wufei felt. Every thrust was even more incredible than the last. Wufei gripped him each time the other boy thrust into Une. It was the most wonderful feeling... to just enjoy this unbelievable moment, to not worry about what would happen afterwards... to just be free. He heard Une climax, then felt Wufei follow. The pleasure increased tenfold as Wufei tightened even more around him. Duo couldn't hold back. He felt the blinding light begin to overtake him, as he grew closer and closer to oblivion, and then he was coming, screaming his completion as his seed left his body.
"Oh yeah, baby! Yeah, yeah, oh yeah, that's it!"
The three of them collapsed onto the bed, wet, sticky, sated, and spent. They didn't move for quite some time until Wufei rolled over to the side, taking Duo with him. Duo pulled out of the other boy reluctantly, removing the condoms to throw them on the bedside table. The three of them lay there like that for even longer, allowing their heart rates to calm, their breathing to return to normal, and their bodies to rest.
"I don't know about you, but that has to be the best damn sex I've ever had!" Duo observed finally.
Wufei shook his head. "Is that all this was for you, baka?"
Duo leaned over Wufei so he could see his face. "You know it wasn't, but you know I can't lie either."
Wufei saw the happiness shining in Duo's eyes and smiled. "I'm glad, Maxwell. It was incredible, I have to admit." Wufei looked over at Une. "Lady?"
Une opened her eyes, a soft smile on her face. "It was beautiful. Both of you were beautiful. It has given me hope that I will find my purpose. How can I not if destiny allowed me to find both of you?"
Wufei pulled her against him, tucking her head under his chin. Duo scooted against his back, the braided boy's arm coming around Wufei's side to hold him closely. Wufei sighed. "Yes, how can any of us not?"
"How's she doing?" came a familiar voice from the doorway.
Lady Une turned to see Wufei standing there, a concerned look on his face. She hadn't expected to see him there of all places, but his presence was comforting nonetheless. She glanced at the redheaded child in the bed and felt complete for the first time since Treize's death. The child had been misled, and now Mariemaia needed to learn the truth; Une was just the person to teach her.
"Better. Doctor says she'll pull through."
Wufei nodded. "Good. She has such an admirable spirit... like her father."
Une smiled. "Is that why?" She didn't have to elaborate for the boy to know what she meant.
Wufei shook his head. "No. I just needed to find out what I truly believed in."
"And what is that?"
Wufei walked over and placed a hand on Une's shoulder. "That you have to have faith in others in order to believe in yourself. That not everyone will let you down no matter how hopeless it looks. That there's nothing cowardly about surrendering when you're wrong."
The brown-haired woman turned her face to kiss Wufei's hand. "Then you have finally found your Justice?"
Wufei looked into light brown eyes and smiled. "No... I found peace."
Wufei watched Duo closely. The braided boy had been sitting there alone for almost two hours; no one would approach him. The black-haired boy sighed in frustration. Didn't anyone understand that the other boy's flippant attitude was just his defense? Couldn't anyone see the anger and hurt behind those violet eyes? He shook his head. Well, if no one else would take the time to notice, he would. Duo needed someone, and who better than someone who understood the feeling of loss the way the Last Dragon did?
Duo saw him out of the corner of his eye approaching. He felt pure fury fill him, making him want to just lash out immediately at the Chinese boy, yet the union they had once shared kept him from doing it.
"Mind if I have a seat?"
Raging violet eyes met kohl. Not a word was spoken, as Duo looked away, his jaw clenched in anger.
"How's Heero?" Wufei asked evenly.
"Why the fuck do you care?" Duo hissed.
Wufei took a deep breath. "Because even though we fought, he's still my friend, Duo."
"Like Treize?" the other boy spat.
Wufei narrowed his eyes. "Treize was never my comrade. Even though I admired him, I will always see him as my enemy. Yuy doesn't even come close. I was confused and angry over how Relena was doing things. I used poor judgment. I believe we all have done that from time to time."
Duo looked at him, his eyes accusing the other boy of betrayal. "How could you, Fei? How could you fight against us? I never would have thought you of all people would do something like that!"
Wufei sat down. "It was a journey I had to make, Duo, a path I had to take to finally come to terms with myself. I don't expect you to understand, but I hope that somehow someway you can still forgive me for it. Sometimes Justice is blind. Perhaps Mercy will be able to see my heart."
Duo glared at him for a few more moments then his shoulders slumped in defeat. "You could have killed him. I don't know if I could have forgiven you for that, Fei. Anything but that."
"You love him then?"
Duo whipped his head around at the question. "Love him?"
Wufei nodded. "You can't lie, Maxwell, hiding won't work this time, and running is not even an option. You have to face this... face yourself... just like I did. You love Heero. It's time you admit it and let yourself finally be happy."
"He could never want me," Duo replied miserably.
"You will never know unless you tell him," Wufei countered. A small smile graced his lips. "Would you like for me to come with you?"
Duo noticed the look in Wufei's eyes, knew what the other boy was referring to, and couldn't help but laugh. "If you think I'm going to need your help the way you did mine, think again, Chang. I am more than capable of seducing Heero Yuy by myself."
Wufei snickered. "Then get the hell out of here and do it, Maxwell."
Duo shook his head as he stood. He paused for a moment, looking into Wufei's eyes, seeing the emotion shining there. Leaning over, he placed a kiss on Wufei's cheek. "My heart can see yours clearly, and it's never looked more beautiful," Duo whispered softly.
Wufei closed his eyes, savoring those words spoken in that familiar voice. When he opened them again, Duo was gone. He sat there, wondering what he was going to do now that his battles with himself were over. A hand suddenly descending on his shoulder, and he turned his head to see another familiar face smiling at him.
"Chang, never thought I'd see you here," a female voice teased.
Wufei looked up into lovely gray eyes and felt destiny pulling at him again; another journey, another path, another chance to see if Justice truly was blind. As he motioned for Sally Po to sit down, Wufei thanked Nataku for letting him see that sometimes being blind wasn't such a bad thing. Sometimes it could be downright blissful.
The End
