Part 1 of 3: Setup
Notes: As you can tell by the name, this part is essentially the setup for the rest of the fic. As for warnings, there's shounen ai, and reckless overuse of ellipses. The Japanese glossary is at the bottom of the page (I try not to use overmuch, but... ).
Timeline: This happens instead of the last episode of the series,
beginning after Heero does his little atmosphere-plunge thing. For
the purposes of this fic, there is no Endless Waltz.

Duo Maxwell couldn't hear. Blood was rushing through his ears so loudly that the world around him dulled to whispers as he stared at Deathscythe's monitor. Heero... you saved Earth... you ended it? Can it be? Dimly, he heard Quatre's voice coming over the comlink from somewhere, saying "He is the heart of the universe."
All he could think was, It' s over??
Back on Earth, climbing out of his Gundam alongside Trowa, Quatre, and Wufei, Duo still couldn't hear. He vaguely knew that this was strange, but mostly he felt suspended, waiting for someone to say the magic words that would break the spell of silence around him. So numb... I can't even feel the wind blowing. It's like I'm walking through cotton.
Ahead of him, he saw figures he recognized from somewhere... they were important somehow... who? Wait... Relena? Heero? "Oi, Heero! Ojousan!" The mass of people around the two asking them questions split up a little, seemingly awed by the four pilots. Amid cries of 'Yatta!,' solemn handshakes between the five, and bows to Relena, Duo turned to Heero, the only person who seemed in focus to him. "Heero... ? Nani ka ga... the fighting... owatta n da?"
Heero shook himself out of his own thoughts. Duo looks as lost as I feel. And his speech is incoherent and *brief*, which is unusual. Is he in shock? I feel fine... I was able to talk to Relena and the rest of them... "Aa. Treize is dead, and there has been a declaration of peace. The war is over, Duo."
"Owatta... ka..." Shock, and then comprehension, washed over his face.
K'so, Heero thought, is he going to pass out? He looks like he's seen a hundred ghosts, all at once.
"Oi, Quatre! Wu-man! The war is over. It's OVER!!" Duo breathed, awed.
Quatre laughed, a little dazed himself. "Yes, Duo, it is." Smiling warmly, he moved from the crowd to stand a few feet from Trowa. For about thirty seconds, until Duo seemed to snap out of his stupor and drew him into a crazy little dance. "Dakara... time to party!"

Japanese used:
"oi!" = "hey!"
"ojousan" = polite term which literally means "daughter," but can refer to other young women, and usually implies that they're a little spoiled.
"yatta!" = literally, "We/I/you did it!": an exclamation of happiness and excitement at an accomplishment.
"nani ka ga" = Here, it *loosely* means "there's something" or "is there something?" It's a sentence fragment (Duo's not being real lucid here).
"owatta n da?" = "Is is over?" : carries a connotation of, "What I'm seeing, is it because it's over?"
"Aa" = "yep"
"owatta... ka" = basically, he's processing that it's over, but is still a little unsure (hence the "ka").
"k'so" = "shit," more or less
"dakara" = "therefore"
