The textbook says she died at twenty-six,
A footnote only to a greater tale:
One craft against the tide of politics,
A bride to peace, for peace a martyr fell.
So much for books. They cannot tell me who
She was, this woman with my face. Was she
Afraid, sometimes, of all she had to do?
And did she dream of all I'd have to be?
No answer comes. I build my mother's ghost
Alone, searching her smile for strength I lack;
If I could hear her voice, all that was lost
Might shine again, to beat the darkness back--
She died at twenty-six: this much I know.
They say I am to live. They don't say how.
