Blue Sky by babaca

The night was long. The mission had not gone particularly well. Returning to the safe house, Duo avoided everyone. Heero decided he had to find out what the problem was.

He found Duo looking out at the rain through the window and humming a low tune.

"Duo?"

The boy with the long braid sat immobile. At first Heero, wasn't sure Duo even heard him, until he heard a quiet voice say, "Heero, do you know any lullabies?"

[Sing me a lullaby
Won't you wipe away my pain
Take me out ... of
Of the driving rain]

"Nani?" Heero asked.

Duo turned to look at him. "Gomen, Heero. I'm just in a strange mood. Gomen nasai."

"What is this about Duo?" Heero asked.

[Sing me a lullaby
Keep me warm and dry
Oh Mother
I'm counting on you

To paint me a blue sky
May the colors run true
That I may look to the heavens
when I search for the truth]

"Today is Sister Helen's birthday," Duo said. "I don't know why I remembered this year. I usually try to forget dates involving my past."

***FLASHBACK BEGINS***

Duo wanted to get Sister Helen a gift. He stole a small purse that had rhinestones. He couldn't understand why she didn't like the gift.

"Duo, I'm not angry," Sister Helen said as she held the young boy's hands. "Why did you need to steal this?"

"I didn't," he hotly denied.

"Lying is a sin, Duo, you know that. And so is stealing," she said gently. "I just want to know why."

"Because I wanted to get you something special. Something from me," Duo said, holding back tears.

"Duo," Sister Helen smiled. "You are special to me. I don't need any gift other than youself in my life. Well, that and maybe the blue sky. Don't you think the sky is beautiful?"

Duo looked puzzled, but looked up. "It's just a sky, Sister."

"Is it? Look at the clouds. Don't they look marvelous? How about that one, don't you think it looks like a puppy dog?" Sister Helen said pointing upward.

"Which one? That one? No, that looks like a dragon!" Duo laughed.

***FLASHBACK ENDS***

"That was before I really thought about the fact that the sky was artificial in the colonies. But it didn't matter," Duo smiled to himself. "The sky is more beautiful here on earth. I often wondered if she ever got to see the real sky."

[Paint me a blue sky
Keep me warm and dry
Oh mother, I'm counting on you
To paint me a blue sky]

"She sounded like a special person, Duo."

"She was the only mother I've every remembered having. I try not to think about her or Father Maxwell too much. It still hurts," Duo said quietly.

"I'm sorry," Heero said.

"For what?" Duo shook himself out of his mood. "Sorry for being such a downer. I'm okay now, promise."

[It seems that so long
I tried to keep it inside
So many people go through life
It seems they just get by
Now I know the truth
Someone paint me a blue sky]

"Duo, why did you want to know if I knew a lullaby?" Heero asked.

"Hmm?" Duo replied, only half-listening. "Oh, Sister would sometimes sing me a lullaby when I was upset. Did I really ask you that? I'm sorry. I think I'm going to hit the sack. Thanks for listening to me Heero. I know playing amateur shrink is not your thing. But I do feel better."

"Hn," Heero responded. "Good night, Duo."

"Good night, Heero."

Duo had a dream. He was sitting on Deathscythe looking up at the moon. He heard himself wondering aloud, if Heero was looking at the same moon. Next to him sat Sister Helen, assuring him that he was. She then laid back with Duo and looked up at the sky. Although the clouds were not as bright they still argued over the shapes they saw in them.

Duo, although still asleep, had both tears in his eyes and a smile on his face.

[Paint me a blue sky]
