About the fic: Song: "Beauty Has Her Way," by Mummy Calls. On the <Lost Boys> soundtrack (which is a whole pile of good GW-resonant music, if you ask me!) c 1987 Warner Bros. Inc.
Notes: This is the songfic-that-swallowed-the-song. No joke. But I like it anyway. It takes place in and around Episodes 9-10 (with some creative license, like streeeeeeetching time and space to make room for more angst!)
Pairings: 1x2+R (this is going to look a lot like a quadratic equation before I'm done, so bear with me)
Warnings: Angst, some sap, some racy language. Ranges from shounen-ai to outright yaoi (I think), depending on the section. As this implies, some sections contain citrus (so be sure to read the warnings at the top of each section!). Possibly OOC, depending on your point of view.

Disclaimer: I don't own these delightful people (Sunrise and the Sotsu Agency do, and Bandai gets to pass them around), nor do I intend to infringe upon the rights of their owners. I don't own the song, either, obviously. Let me know if you're liking this, and I'll post the next bit. (And lemme know if you want to archive, as always.)

Parts 1 and 2: I know what you want/I know where you go Contains shounen-ai (1x2) +R. And basketball! And sympathetic Relena -- this arc will eventually make it to 1x2xR, though this story doesn't get nearly that far.

Part 2: I know where you go

/I know where you go
I know what you do
Better than you do/

The purr of a luxury car made both of them turn. And what a car. It was -- pink. A rolling mass of bubble gum, a doll's limo grown to full size. Surreal. And then its door opened.

"Hey, that's -- "

"Relena."

The girl from the pier, and the hospital. A current of whispers ran through the assembled students, as some of them recognized her from the newsvid. She closed the door of the ridiculous car and came hesitantly forward. Her eyes weren't at all hesitant, though, and she seemed to see no one but Yuy. "Heero. I wanted to see you."

Duo's already wide eyes grew larger at her words. That place had been on a different continent, for pete's sake -- she'd crossed the world just to see this lunatic? Looking from her to Heero and back again, he commented, "She's not typical, wanting to see the guy who's trying to kill her."

She didn't want to say more, not with the beginnings of a fan club already taking shape behind her. <Please, please, look at me. I won't jeopardize whatever it is you're planning to do here. But I heard what happened, and I'm so afraid of what it must be doing to you.> She'd been right to worry -- he looked even more sealed-off than usual. So she searched for safe words, though she cringed at their empty simpering: "It's been lonely since my father died -- I guess I wanted to track down old friends."

Still unsure of where this was going, Duo decided to rescue her. "Long time no see, oujo-san. How's that backstroke?"1

She turned to him with real delight, laughing. So this one had managed to stay alive, too. "Oh, I've been practicing. Got the dead man's float down, I think." More laughter. Heero raised an eyebrow at the exchange, but didn't seem in a hurry to speak.

Duo nodded toward the limousine. "What's with the, um, transportation?"

She winced. "My father's idea of a dream car. It's not so bad, I guess. Anyway, I hardly ever have to see the outside of it. But it's a little bit -- "

"Conspicuous?"

"Prejudicial, I was going to say. Everyone who sees it assumes I must be a big fan of ruffles." She wrinkled her nose dismissively.

"Hey, who <doesn't> like ruffles?"

Heero cleared his throat pointedly, obviously about to ditch this conversation.

Subdued, Relena smiled at him. "Well. Anyway. I hope I'll get to talk to you, sometime. I'll let you get back to your, er, game." Suddenly aware of their gym clothes, the two pilots looked at each other with some embarrassment. "Try to keep your head above water, Heero." Duo spluttered with half-stifled laughter as she moved demurely away toward the provost's office. Leveling a deadly glare at him, Heero stalked off toward the relative safety of his dorm room.

Well, this was certainly an interesting development. Duo hadn't thought he would ever see Yuy at a loss, but the other pilot didn't seem to know what to make of the Darlian girl's presence at their school -- especially since she seemed to be enrolled, and even turned out to be taking some of the same classes.

Watching him watch her, Duo chuckled. <Some gaps in your training, eh, Heero? They didn't exactly prepare you for everything you'd run into down here. Welcome to Earth, buddy.> There was an uneasy yearning in Heero's eyes when he looked at Relena that he'd be the last to acknowledge -- but it proved he was human, maybe even capable of frivolous things like emotion. Maybe not a hopeless case after all.

He wasn't sure what the girl meant to Heero, so he settled back (mentally, at least) to see what would happen next. This was going to be worth the price of admission -- but then, every chance to watch Heero was definitely worth it.
