~*I had a broken heart
Loved you right from the start
Wish you could stay with me for always
Is it true -
Do angels fly away?*~
-unknown-
[And I think I finally know you
I can see beyond your smile
I think that I can show you
That what we have is still worthwhile ]
Pulses raced, breaths quickened as the five words were uttered, words that demanded the unlocking of an intimate secret. /"Why are you *really* here?"/ Silence fell throughout the room, filling the gaps the tension had left and the empty spaces surrounding the two figures. Time ceased to have any meaning. All that mattered was the eyes that stared at one another, the awaiting explanation that hung in the balance.
[Don't you know that love is like a thread
That keeps unravelling
But then it ties us back together in the end ]
The words never came as the familiar silence cloaked the figures. Cobalts darted nervously across the room, focusing anywhere but on the man opposite him. He couldn't face Duo, couldn't look at those expecting eyes, yearning for a reason. And so he turned away.
[In your eyes
I can see my dream's reflections
In your eyes
I found the answers to my questions ]
Duo couldn't believe it. Here Heero had come, waltzing back into his life after what had seemed an eternity, wrecking what futile efforts he had made to put the past behind him. But it came back with a vengance, basically slapping him across the face when he opened his door to find his former lover standing there. Duo wasn't stupid - he knew there was a reason as to why Heero had come to see him. And he thought he would get an explanation, but quietness was his answer. Typical Heero. He felt the anger boil inside him, threatening to surge over.
[In your eyes
I can see the reason why our love's alive ]
The silence was shattered.
[In your eyes
We're drifting safely back to shore
And I think I've finally learned to love you more ]
"Well, Heero, it's not that hard of a question. Why did you come here? Tell me!!" he spat, the words having a mocking hint to them. Duo was becoming more and more frustrated by the second. He wished that this whole event was a dream, a nightmare, and that reality would wake him from his slumber. But it wasn't. This was reality.
[And you warned me that life changes
And that no one really knows
Whether time will make us strangers
Or whether time will make us grow ]
Heero could feel the anger that was laced in Duo's words. The hurt, the bitterness, the despair that had never been there before. It was so unlike Duo - the Duo he had known and loved. He remembered a youthful boy, full of cheer and laughter. The man before him seemed like a copy, a stranger full of spite. But this was the real thing. What else had three years of loneliness done to him?
[Oh, even though the winds of time will change
In a world where nothing stays the same ]
The braided man searched the dark haired man. The "Perfect Soldier" mask was still in place, but it had been dulled with age, slowly peeling and cracking, waiting to fall and crash to the ground. Those sapphire eyes held so much emotion - immensely different than what they had used to. Before they were cold as stone, an unrelenting barricade. Now most of the walls were gone, leaving only a vulnerable creature hiding behind the remnants of an old facade. So much confusion... If Heero had come here with a purpose in mind, why couldn't he just say it? How could he possibly be confused if he knew the intent he came there for?
[Oh, through it all our love will still remain
In your eyes
I can see my dream's reflections
In your eyes
I found the answers to my questions ]
He stirred. "If you don't have anything to say to me, don't waste my time." Once again he searched the other character over, hoping to find something - anything - to give him a clue or a piece of the puzzle to his answer.
Nothing.
[In your eyes
I can see the reason why our love's alive ]
Heero sat there, still in shock. It was so easy to sequence how he would've done it in his head. Instead, it was the hardest thing he ever had to do, even harder than the wars. He felt the aggravation surrounding Duo, felt him growing uncomfortable at his silence, felt the tension sky rocket through the roof.
[In your eyes
We're drifting safely back to shore
And I think I've finally learned to love you more ]
The ex-Wing pilot rose his head, his mind still dazed searching for the answer. Duo looked him over and over, on the edge of anticipation for a word - any - to escape Heero's lips.
Minutes passed by...
Unsettling shifting... Pained expressions...
Silence.
"Heero, if you have nothing to say to me, please leave. I don't have anymore time to waste, and this confrontation has only upped the stress level I currently have."
[Oh, in your eyes
I can see the reason why our love's alive ]
Yet, Heero sat, idly fidgeting. Time continued to flow, and Duo waited for movement. He received nothing.
"Well if you aren't gonna leave, I sure as hell am. I can't take this anymore, Heero." He stood, grabbing at the jacket that had been draped over the couch's arm. Silently, Duo stalked out of the room.
/No, no, no, I can't loose him again!/
Heero darted up, rushing after the braided beauty, grasping at his arm. Duo was pulled back from his motion but stayed as he was, his back still facing Heero. He had had enough of the games, and wanted out. Obviously Heero had nothing to say to him. Why bother listening to him scrounge up a last minute half-assed reason? No, nothing like that would be enough. Words alone couldn't mend his already broken heart. He knew internally why the other had come, but he wanted to hear it from Heero's own mouth. He needed verification, legit proof for him to release all the doubt in his heart. If Heero couldn't give that, he couldn't bear it. Not anymore. A pained smirk crossed his lips. /Who'd have guessed? The God of Death running from his personal hell. What irony./
[You and I
We're drifting safely back to shore ]
"Duo, wait. I-...I-..." Heero held a firm grip on Duo's slender wrist, clutching at it as if it were some rope he was clinging to to keep from falling. He slightly pulled the other back, jerking the American face to face, eye to eye with him. He noticed the rainwater beginning to collect in the orbs, its storm sewer threatening to overflow. Pain stabbed at his heart for the tears in his lover's eyes - ones he had put there. He lightly released the grip on Duo's limb, still holding onto it, but not as tightly. He looked away, too shameful and cowardly to face the boy he loved so dearly. Thoughts raced like gunfire through Heero's mind, mirrored in the depths of his eyes. He was searching - grasping - for the right words to say... Ones that conveyed his true feelings... Ones that wouldn't mislead, but correctly state what he felt inside.
Duo's heart stopped. He caught himself holding his breath. Was Heero really...?
No vocalizations were exchanged as Heero caressed the other boy's cheek, lovingly wiping the crystalline drops that had fallen from the indigo windows. It wasn't needed. Time ceased to exist as the waterfall continued to flow, only to be dried by a single touch of lip against lip, soulful kisses hushing the braided boy's shaking sobs. The latter submitted to these affections, eyes painfully shut, body intertwined with body, filling a desired embrace. He layed his cheek upon Heero's chest, listening to the beating lifeforce within. He wound his arms around Heero's chisled but lean chest, his lover's arms holding him ever so close, stroking the silken chestnut mass. Both wished they could stay like this forever; this moment never having to end. The two felt at ease, snuggling in the now again familiar comfort of each other. The Japanese boy bent his head down, placing it in the crook of his lover's neck. It seemed so right... so complete... here with the braided ex-pilot. And as his koi's silent cries ended, Heero whispered ever-so-lightly what had been bottled up inside of him for years...
"Aishiteru, Duo... Zutto."
Duo smiled, a serene landscape washing over his features. "I love you, too, Heero. More than you'll ever know."
[And I think I've finally learned to love you more ]
Epilogue
In the skies above, the almighty figure smiled pleasantly, eyes twinkling as if they were holding a precious secret. He laughed, a hearty chime ringing throughout the heavens. A seraphim turned to him, puzzled at his master's unexpected burst of happiness.
"My Lord, may I ask as to why you're so joyous?"
Another knowing smile came as an answer. He gazed to the Earth, softly whispering, "I think Death has finally found something worth living for."
