A character study of Dorothy through Quatre's eyes
What is Dorothy doing here, thought Quatre as he entered the room. He recognized the girl with the icy blonde hair and the calm smile. Then he felt something familiar. It feels like the Zero System, he thought.
He watched Heero and Dorothy fence. What excellent fencers, the both of them, thought Quatre. But it seems they're taking it much too seriously. Considering that she knows he's an accomplished fighter, I'm surprised she's trying so hard to goad him. When Heero's sword pierced her mask, he gasped then looked closely at the expression on her face. She didn't even flinch. She still has that same smile on her face.
After Heero left the room, Quatre said, "Are you hurt?"
"I'm perfectly fine. Thank you for asking," she said as she took off her mask.
"Weren't you afraid?"
Dorothy laughed. "Afraid, why should I be? If Heero Yuy wanted me dead, I would be dead. Really, Quatre."
"I'm glad you're all right. Where did you learn to fence like that?"
"I had the best teachers. My father was an excellent fencer. My cousin Treize also practiced with me. It would be a disgrace if I couldn't fence. You are a Gundam pilot, too, are you not?"
"Yes, I am."
"You should be proud of piloting such a great machine!"
"For me, it's not something I'm proud of, it's just something I do."
"Is that why you play the piano instead of fence?" A flash of irritation flitted across her face, then she put on her smiling mask. "You pretend to be gentle with your manners, apologies and your artistic streak, but you can not deny that there is a side of you that is utterly ferocious. You want to hide away from the part of you that is fiery, and violent, but you can not. You should be more like your friend."
"Heero... Heero is not just a fighter. He's also gentle and kind. He... " For a second, Quatre couldn't speak. "He could've held it against me all the things I did and nearly did. During a fight, I nearly killed him. But in the end, he forgave me. That is why I think your telling him to fight is wrong because in the end, his kindness is stronger."
Dorothy arched an eyebrow. "After all you've been through, you still believe in the sweetness of mankind. Dear Quatre, I'm surprised they let you ride a Gundam with that attitude." With that, she turned to go to the changing room.
The expression in those eyes, he thought, I've seen it before, but where?
"My father also died... "
He looked at the cold blue eyes staring back at him. I remember where I've seen that expression before, he thought. It was in the inside of my helmet. My eyes reflected back at me, cold, remorseless, hard. It was while I was flying Wing Zero, when I wanted to destroy the colonists for killing my father, who didn't raise a hand to defend himself. I had wanted to destroy the universe because it hurt me, because it was unfair. That's where I've seen that expression before.
Trowa nearly died trying to talk some sense into me. He kept telling me that the pain I felt was because I was gentle. This girl, he thought, I must do the same thing for her.
The End
