Duo could tell from the way his breath... bubbled in his chest that one, maybe two of his ribs had punctured his lungs. He was working harder and harder, but getting less and less oxygen. Black spots danced irregularly in front of his eyes.

"Ha! Drowning inside a spacesuit! I always have to do things the hard way, huh, Heero?"

Heero didn't answer, but then, Heero hadn't said anything since two hours after the crash. He'd stopped making any kind of noise at all about an hour ago, but Duo kept talking to him. It was either that, or start screaming.

Duo paused for a moment, and changed his grip on Heero's ankle. It worried him, when he stopped to think about it, pulling Heero around on the surface of the asteroid like this. It had to be aggravating his injuries.

But Heero wasn't complaining /bloodblood there was so much blood/ and somehow that worried Duo even more. He took as deep a breath as he could, and kept moving.

"Dammit, I know it's a big asteroid, but it's an asteroid, not a planet! It's a finite object, and I'm going to keep moving, and we'll find the damn signal beacon, and it will be working and I'll contact Wufei, and he'll pull us off this goddamn rock before it crashes in to the L2 generators! Right? Right! It's a plan!"

Duo stopped, suddenly overcome by a fit of coughing that left the inside of his helmet spattered with blood. "Not good, not good, not good," he muttered. He turned to ask Heero a question, but whipped his head back before the /blood/ and /torn suit/ and /cracked faceplate/ could register.

He closed his eyes tightly and shook his head, trying to deny the images that seemed seared on his retinas. Blood trickled down his chin as he bit through his bottom lip. "If I don't see it, it's not there." Nodding slightly, Duo picked up Heero's ankle and kept moving.

Five minutes later, Duo dropped to his knees, arms wrapped around his chest, moaning in pain. It felt as if hot shrapnel were ripping through him, every breath an agony. "I can't, I can't... oh, god, Heero, I'm sorry!"

Duo knelt in the dust for a long time, trying to breathe. Slowly, he shuffled around until he was facing Heero, who was lying on the ground beside him. With an inarticulate cry, Duo slammed both of his hands into Heero's motionless torso, over and over again. "How could you? How could you? How could you leave me alone?"

Suddenly Duo realized what he was doing. Appalled, he pulled Heero into his lap, leaning over him and rocking slowly. "I didn't mean it, I'm sorry, I'm sorry."

Duo leaned back and looked up at the stars, still holding Heero cradled against him. "It's not that I regret it, you know, because I don't! Not one minute of it! We did good, we kicked some serious ass, we had fun. It was fun."

He held Heero even closer, hoping to feel warmth, even through two layers of suits. "It's just, just... this isn't how I thought it was going to be, you know? It's not what I had planned." Duo laughed quietly. "I always thought when this was all over, you and I would get a house somewhere, maybe a dog. You know, have a home together."

Duo leaned over, resting his helmet against Heero's. "You would have done it, right? Because I know how you feel about me. I feel that way, too. I do."

He sighed once more. "Oh, fuck it!" Duo raised his head, and with his last bit of strength, slammed it as hard as he could into Heero's helmet, shattering the glass in both their faceplates.

And in that split second between pain and darkness, in that moment when his lips brushed against Heero's, Duo saw Heero standing before him, arms wide, smiling, welcoming him home.
