The Nightmare Within by Ebonydove

Part Nine

Duo remained silent and sulking as Trowa pulled the car through the gate and into the police lot. He had no idea what he was going to say to Heero and knew that despite their one-night stand; his recent behavior wasn't going to make it easy for Heero to accept how he was feeling any more than it was going to be for him to explain it. As the car slowly pulled to a stop he glanced in the direction of the dimly lit corner of the parking garage and slumped down further in his seat when he realized the officer standing outside the metal door that led up the flight of stairs to the offices of the police station was Heero himself.

He was standing ramrod straight, frowning darkly, and had his arms crossed over his chest in an almost clique stance as if he was posing for an anti-crime ad or some kind of anti-drug poster. He turned to look pleadingly at Trowa who was wearing an odd little smirk and simply shrugged at him before unbuckling his seatbelt and getting out ignoring Duo's obvious discomfort.

"You coming, Maxwell?" Trowa grinned as he leaned into the open car window. "If you don't, he's just going to come over here and get you. You do know that, right?"

"Yeah, yeah." Duo scowled and waved him off with a hand. "Whatever."

Trowa slid his hands into his pockets and strolled quietly over to where Heero was still standing frozen in place. Duo watched as Heero's eyes flicked from him in the car to his partner. Trowa stopped in front of him and Duo had to sit up and lean forward a bit to try to see what was being exchanged, but was too far away to hear anything. He saw Heero nod his head and then Trowa stepped past him, opened the metal door, and disappeared behind it.

Huffing a sigh, he unbelted and opened the car door. It was almost as if it was the signal that Heero was waiting for because he noticed the moment the door swung open, Heero took the first few steps towards him. By the time he had climbed out and shut the door behind him Heero was already in front of him looking down right pissed off.

"Uh, hi Heero." He quirked a shy smile despite the glare Heero had given him as he turned around to face him.

"Where the hell have you been?" Heero almost growled at him. "I've been trying to get a hold of you for almost three days. And what the hell were you doing down at those docks? You know it isn't safe and on top of that Trowa said someone's been following you? You should have called me or at the very least thought things through before you acted on them."

Heero's accusatory tone felt almost like a physical blow to him. His defenses automatically went up as he stood there for a few moments trying to get his thoughts together to respond. It wasn't what he had been expecting. He was annoyed that Heero didn't seem even the least bit pleased to see him. Instead as he stood there tensely waiting for some kind of welcome from Heero especially after the last time they had been together, all he was greeted with instead was blatant hostility. After a few more moments of watching the way Heero's eyes were flashing with anger and letting his own anger settle in it's familiar place in his gut, he coolly crossed his arms over his chest and leaned back against the car. "Who the fuck are you to tell me anything, anyway?" He replied lazily as he slipped his eyes shut and tilted his head back as if bored with the whole encounter.

Heero's eyes grew wide and his mouth opened slightly, obviously surprised by the ice of Duo's response. All he could do was let out an explosive sigh and take an unsteady step back from him. It wasn't how he meant to greet Duo, but it had just fell from his mouth and before he could say anything else, Duo tossed his head back a little more to get his long bangs out of his eyes, opened eyes flashing with purple fire, and continued speaking in a low menacing voice.

"You don't have the right to say shit about what I do or where I go. I should've jumped out of that damn car and took my chances becoming a fucking road-pizza instead of letting your partner, Mr. Amusing, bring me here to put up with this shit." He then pushed away from the car and spinning on his heel, started to stride towards the exit of the parking ramp.

"Duo, wait... !" Heero reached out and took a strong grip on his arm to try to get him to stop.

Duo swung around with surprising agility and speed and almost managed to connect a fist to his jaw.
"Take your damn hands off me!" He shouted as small puffs of breath swirled up over his head as he looked to be preparing himself for a fight.

Heero instantly dropped his hands to his sides and watched in horror as Duo gave the arm he had just let go of a few quick brushes as if he'd been hurt. "Duo please... " He sighed and ran a hand through his disshelved hair and turned once anger filled eyes, now full of regret and concern, to him. "Please don't run off." He was a lost for words right then and hoped that he could express the turmoil he was feeling without spooking Duo further. "I was just so damned worried when I found out it was you that Trowa picked up and that he found you down at the docks. I just thought the very worse."

"And what was that? Turning tricks, huh?"

Heero watched as Duo's eyes, despite being obvious anger filled, seemed to be glossing over suspiciously with tears. He huffed another explosive sigh and ran his hand through his hair again. "I didn't mean to hurt you... when I grabbed your arm just now or by what I said. Please, don't go." He gave Duo a curt little bow of his head and waited for any sign that he was forgiven before he'd move again.

Duo visibly relaxed his stance and dropping his eyes to stare at the ground for a moment. "Guess you don't know your own goddamn strength, huh?" He said quietly as looked up from under the sweep of chestnut colored bangs and gave Heero a small smile. "Remind me never to piss you off again."

Heero's face fell a little more and he frowned again. He straightened up and took a few steps closer to Duo and very slowly and gently put his hands on his shoulders. "I would never, ever hurt you like that. Not ever. You believe that don't you?" Heero never took his eyes from Duo's and was relieved when Duo finally blushed slightly and gave him a small nod. "Good." He pulled Duo to him and gave him a firm embrace. "I apologize for scaring you."

Duo wriggled out of the embrace and gave him a saucy smile. "It takes a lot more than some wanna-be super cop grabbing my arm or insinuating shit to scare me, ya know."

Heero smiled and slipped his hand into Duo's. "Even so... "

"So does this mean that you are happy to see me? Even though I can see that I've thoroughly pissed you off?" Duo asked playfully letting his anger cool and the knot in his stomach ease a bit as they began to walk towards the metal doorway.

Heero stopped and turned, surprising Duo as he quickly leaned into him and gave him a soft, lingering kiss. When he pulled away, Duo's face was flushed slightly and his eyes seemed to be searching for something from him. "Come on, it's cold out here. I'll fill you in on what's been happening with the case inside where it's warmer."

Duo stopped abruptly and pulled his hand out of Heero's. "Heero... I... "

Heero turned around and waited patiently as Duo looked at everything in the parking garage but him. "What is it?"

He shrugged again and slipped his hands into the pockets of his pants. "Nothing."

Heero frowned, but didn't push him. He had no intentions of letting him out of his sight and sooner or later, Duo would let what was on his mind come out.

Once they were upstairs in the office of the station and settled, Heero went to the vending machine to grab some sodas for the three of them. Duo sat patiently on a straight-backed chair next to Heero's desk as Trowa finished a phone conversation in hushed tones on the other side of the room. When he was done he clicked the phone shut and came to sit on the edge of Heero's desk.

"Had to call the little wife?" Duo smirked up at him.

Trowa smiled back. "In a way." Trowa picked up a pencil and twirled it back and forth in his fingertips with amazing dexterity. "Quatre worries when I'm late and don't call him to let him know I'm okay. I didn't get a chance to call him earlier because I was busy dealing with you." Trowa glanced from the spinning pencil to Duo whose mouth was slightly agape and was blinking much like an owl at him. He barked out a burst of laughter and gently lifted Duo's chin with two fingers to shut his open mouth.

"Uh, sorry. I just didn't know that you were... "

"Gay?"

"Well, yeah."

"Amazing isn't it? That the two most talented and attractive guys in the squad would rather be spending their free time in cuffs with another guy than anyone else, huh?" He chuckled and gave the pencil one last twirl before flipping it up to the ceiling where it stuck expertly next to a bunch of others.

"So that comment you made earlier... about sleeping with me. You were flirting!"

"Like I said, kid. You're cute, but I'm happily married and Heero is not someone I'd want to steal his boyfriend from. He's got a mean over protective streak ya know."

"Yeah, I noticed." Duo blushed hotly and wished that Heero would hurry the hell back with that soda.

"What did you notice?" Heero asked from the doorway.

"He just finally figured out that my... wife isn't quite what he thought."

Heero gave them both a perplexed look before setting the sodas on the desk. "Wife?"

"Don't let Quatre hear you call him that or he'll skin your hide." Trowa laughed again followed by a soft chuckle from Heero.

Trowa's laugh was a clear sound that made Duo want to try catching it and locking it in his pocket. Instead, he quickly grabbed the nearest soda and opened it. Taking a large swallow he figured that the two of them could exchange knowing expressions while he stayed the hell out of it. Even though he had been the one to bring the topic up in the first place.

"Well, I'm going to take off. Don't stay here too late you two." Trowa grabbed a soda as he slid off the desk and grabbed his jacket that had been haphazardly tossed over the chair to his desk. "And Duo?"

"Yeah?"

"Remember what I said earlier, okay?"

"Whatever, man." Duo blushed again and took another gulp of soda.

Trowa smiled and gave Heero a little nod before disappearing from the room. Duo sipped at his drink and glanced around the room, noticing the small personal items on Trowa's desk like a small stuffed lion and a picture of a young blonde man in a silver frame. "Is that guy in the picture Quatre?"

Heero walked over and picked it up smiling a little. "Yes."

Duo leaned forward a bit and let out a little whistle. "Pretty cute. Makes you wonder what the hell he's doin' with your partner."

Heero paused for a minute just looking at the picture. "He saved Trowa's life once." He said softly.

"Really? How?"

"Oh, it was a long time ago... during the wars. But ever since then, I don't think they could really live without each other. They're like two different instruments playing the same sheet of music."

"You slay me, man." Duo grinned as he watched Heero's eyes go all soft.

Heero set the picture down and turned to him. "And why's that?"

"Because you can go from all tough to a puddle of goo in about two shakes of a lamb's tail. It's fun to watch." Duo was smirking openly and finally seemed to be at ease for the first time since Trowa brought him to the station.

"Really?" Heero grinned and stepped closer to him where he sat. "And so what if I'm a hopeless romantic?" He placed his hands on Duo's shoulders again and leaned forward as if to kiss him.

Duo surged up and stood in front of him, blushing hard and dropping his eyes to the floor again. "I uh... I...

"I'm sorry, Duo. I think I'm making some assumptions here that maybe I shouldn't be?"

"It's not that I don't want to be around you. It's just that Trowa told me that you got in a lot trouble because of me. He said that you took a lot of heat and had to admit some things about your private life that maybe you didn't want to?"

Heero smiled warmly and lifted Duo's chin with his fingers. "I simply followed my feelings."

Duo blinked up at him, torn between wishing he would kiss him and wanting to avoid what that kissing could lead to. He wanted so much to believe that he had found the one person he could trust and let his guard down around. Heero lifted his mouth to his, kissing him firmly and taking a long, slow time before slipping his warm tongue into his mouth. Duo felt his whole body go liquid as Heero's gentle coaxing gave him the courage to meet those kisses. Heero's strong hands had gone from kneading his shoulders, to sliding down his arms, to gently resting on his hips. Then when Heero drew him closer he felt as if he was falling slowly forward. He shut his eyes against the slow spin he suddenly felt and blushed hotly when he heard his own voice whisper Heero's name.

Heero broke the kiss and tugged Duo to him in a tight embrace. "Duo... don't run away from me again."

Duo blinked his eyes open and studied the somber expression on Heero's face. "I didn't mean to cause you trouble." He whispered.

Heero smiled before leaning forward to kiss Duo again. He backed Duo against the desk and carefully eased him to sit on the edge of it as he trailed hot kisses from the corner of his mouth to his ear, teasing his earlobe with the tip of his tongue. He then moved his lips down his neck, causing Duo to arch his back in a gesture of trust and surrender. He raked his teeth against his neck and collarbone; pulling the collar of his shirt open to nip at his throat. And then suddenly pulled away.

Duo sat up and watched as Heero slowly unbuckled his utility belt. Gun and all dropped to the floor with a thunk that made Duo almost jump. Heero smiled openly and tugged his black tie off, letting it slip from around his neck to drop to the floor to lay alongside his discarded weapon. Then he leaned over Duo again and kissed him softly. "I want you more than anyone I've ever known." He murmured in deep tones that made Duo shiver. "Please tell me this is okay... that this is what you want too."

Duo dropped his eyes from Heero's passionate gaze and tried to find his voice. He cocked his head to one side and smiled back at him before slowly reaching out and unbuttoning the top button of Heero's shirt, allowing his fingers to linger there for a few moments until slipping them along the edge of it and away.

One of Heero's hands moved from its place on Duo's hip to glide up to his ribs. With a few gentle tugs, Heero untucked Duo's shirt and pulled it up over his head to expose his bare chest. He began to kiss the smooth skin near Duo's collarbone, stopping to give a small white scar there some extra affection. When he felt Duo wince when his kissed it, he glanced up and waited for Duo's breathing to steady before he spoke softly to him. "You believe me when I say that I would never hurt you?" Duo nodded and threaded two fingers through Heero's long, ruffled bangs but still wasn't speaking. "Then tell me what you want Duo."

Duo blinked and frowned slightly. "I'm just so tired... " he started, but rushed out the next part of what was spiraling in his mind when he saw Heero's expression change from passion to concern. "Tired of being alone. I'm just so damned tired of pretending to be strong. I need someone in my life I can trust. Who won't... disappear on me."

Heero didn't say anything, knowing that Duo's sad, scattered words were alluding to the people in his past that he must have lost from the orphanage, the church he had read about in his file, and of course, Hilde. He moved closer to Duo and placing his palm along the side of his face kissed him sweetly. "I'm not going anywhere without you."

Duo wrapped slender arms around his neck and pulled him down on top of him, knocking a pencil holder, stapler, reports, and the remainder of his soda off the flat surface of the desk and onto the floor in order to make room for them both to lie there. Heero quickly removed his shirt and pressed his bare chest against Duo, sliding his hand to fondle at a nipple as he continued to coax Duo into opening up to him.

The first time they had made love it was explosive and bordered an almost violent union of their bodies, but this time Heero wanted Duo to feel the passion along with the surprising devotion he felt as well. His lips traveled down the length of Duo's torso until he reached Duo's bellybutton. He glanced up to Duo's face and was pleased with how Duo had tossed his head back and arched his back again at his kisses. He slowly unzipped the fly to Duo's pants and teased his way down until he was able to flick his tongue over the barely exposed tip of his erection. Duo let out the softest moan that Heero had ever heard and it made him want to hear that soft sound over and over. He felt himself allowing his reason to flee him, searching for some unfulfilled desire that only this boy could give him. Heero pushed up off of Duo and quickly divested himself of his remaining clothing, and now stood proud and unashamed in front of Duo.

Duo licked his suddenly dry lips and reached out for Heero's closest hand. Once in his, he placed it on the top of his groin, swollen tight under the fabric of his pants. Heero gently tugged them off as Duo lifted his backside enough to let them slip off to the floor before leaning back and stretching his arms over his head. He smiled at the growl he heard Heero make and wrapped his legs around his waist when he felt Heero settle between them. Heero carefully massaged Duo's entrance before slipping one finger inside and kissed him soundly.

To Duo it seemed as if Heero had a hundred hands all touching and soothing and caresses. He felt himself give in to the sensations of his lips and hands and need and when Heero at last entered him he curled his fingers into his hair and met his steady hard thrusts with rocking ones of his own. When he came there was no fear, or pain, only the beginning of the end of his desperate need to be near someone who cherished him. It consumed and blinded him. At last he heard Heero cry out as slow, receding waves of passion shook them.

Heero rubbed his damp face against Duo's neck as he placed butterfly soft kisses there and whispered babbling nothings to him, before finally pulling out and away. He wrapped two hands around Duo's arms and pulled him off the desk with him and gathered him against his chest; heart trip hammering like wild. "I pleased you?" He whispered into Duo's thick hair.

Duo pulled back enough for him to stand at arm's length and smiled warmly at him. "If you only knew... "

"We can't stay here. There are showers on the third floor and then we'll go back to my place, if that's all right. I want you near me Duo. Will you please come home with me?"

"It's so strange, Heero. I feel like we've known each other for a lifetime and when I'm with you, the nightmares stay away. I can't feel him creeping into my mind and plaguing me with his dark desires when I'm with you." Duo shuttered then against Heero's warm body.

"Duo?"

"It's like he knows that he can't see through me when you're near." Duo looked up into Heero's worried eyes and smiled softly. "I'm sorry, it is just so strange not to have that nagging feeling following me. When I'm with you, he's just gone."

"Then stay with me, Duo." Heero kissed him slowly. "Let me protect you. Let me help you. We'll catch this monster and then you'll be forever free of him."

Duo couldn't admit that despite Heero's unspoken promise, that getting rid of the murdering stranger in his head wasn't going to be easy. They'd have to go through the dark before he would be able to live in the light.

"Duo?"

"Yeah?" Duo pulled himself out of the dark thoughts and pressed himself close to Heero.

"Do you need anything before we head home?"

Duo blinked a few times at the question before ducking his head and smiling. It was both a simple and heavy question that Heero had been asked. "No... I don't need anything else. Anything at all."
