The snowfall was heavy. It had been snowing all day and it continued into the night. The night sky was not black, but smoky gray. Fog all over the city. The streetlights reflected each snowflake, illuminating it. A million shooting stars falling to the ground.
It was no time for snow in this part of the world. It was mid-March. But Earth's climate was not regulated like it was in the colonies. Here, there was always an element of surprise. It could heat up in the middle of winter or snow in early spring. There could be thunderstorms in fall. In the colonies, you only got those in summer.
Heero shoved his hands in his pockets as he continued walking down the street. Everything was so quiet at this time of night. He could only hear the noise his shoes made as he threaded on the snow. But if he concentrated enough, he could hear the snowflakes, too. It was like sand seeping from one side to the other on an ancient hourglass. A soft gush of wind blew by, sprinkling his face with tiny cold grains. This wasn't wet snow. It was powdery.
Powdery. Like it had been that day, only a couple months ago. It felt like years.
Duo laying on his back, in the middle of a snow-covered field. Trees surrounding them, sheltering them from prying eyes. This is what Duo had wanted, to have sex outside, on the snow. No, they wouldn't be cold. He'd spread a blanket on the ground and there was no need to remove all your clothes to do this. Partial clothing, he'd said, only added to the excitement.
Excitement.
As their hands began to explore each other's bodies, sliding inside a shirt to pinch a nipple, sneaking inside tight jeans, eliciting sensations that had been unknown to Heero.
Warm kisses. Tongues slipping in through parted lips, twirling, beginning a dance. Each move timely, precise, a perfect rhythm, even when it had never been practiced before. Like in a battle, each opponent striking without thinking, simply knowing that it was the right time.
Duo had made noises. Noises that Heero had never imagined could come from a person; noises from Duo's mouth that had completely invaded Heero's senses, intoxicating him like alcohol. Moans and words that rang in his ears and traveled throughout his body, raising his heartbeat, making his chest swell as his breathing increased.
There was a tingling sensation on his fingers as Duo's lips closed around them, sucking them one by one, pressing sharp teeth just hard enough for Heero to gasp, to lose his breath. Shivers overtaking his body, not because he was cold, surrounded by snow, but because he was hot.
So hot and hard, sliding inside Duo's body, feeling tight muscles clenching around him. Duo pulling him closer, hands on Heero's shoulders, begging him to go deeper, faster, harder.
"Look at me, Heero!" He'd said. "Don't close your eyes or you won't remember any of this. You need the images to go with the memories."
Heero had opened his eyes then, and watched Duo's face, the wide smile that played on his lips. Steam forming in the air as Duo's mouth opened, releasing shallow pants and groans.
Duo's eyes had been open all along. Also blue, but not like his own. Heero didn't know how to describe that color; he'd never seen eyes like that. He'd only seen something that came close to that blue in one of Relena's rings. Some precious stone.
He'd moved inside Duo with his eyes wide open, making a conscious effort not to close them. It was what Duo wanted. His body was beginning to scream, the pleasure so intense, and Duo's smiling face and deep eyes. Heero had been lost in them that day.
It had been months since then.
He'd walked several blocks and his socks were wet. His shoes had allowed snow in. Now it was water. He didn't own snow boots. As he approached his building, he reached inside his jacket to search for his keys. His fingers felt numb. He didn't own gloves either. The cold had never bothered him.
He always avoided the elevator. Six flights of stairs would have made someone else reasonably warm, out of breath. But his breathing had not changed. It was as though he was still strolling outside on the snow. His breathing slow, always controlled.
Except for that day...
Duo's heated kisses on his neck, his jaw line, his earlobe. Then that rush of blood as Duo's hips had swayed in the air, pulling him down in a wave of pleasure that had taken him by surprise. All control lost. He'd cried out, and called Duo's name again, and again, feeling his lungs constrict and expand, as if someone was stealing away his air.
Duo had laughed, and told him he was good. Good at everything he did. Sex wasn't the exception. And he'd thanked him then. He'd pulled his pants back up and dusted off the snow from his braid.
"Stay warm!" Duo had kissed him fiercely. Once again, stealing his breath away.
The next day Duo was gone. Heero had been called to Lady Une's office to be assigned a new partner. Agent Maxwell had some personal matters to attend.
Duo had traveled back to the colonies. Without saying goodbye. Without saying a word.
It was hard for Heero to understand. He'd thought that...
He didn't know what he'd thought. He had no experience with any of this. So perhaps, this was the right way. This is what people did. Duo seemed to know what he was doing.
Weeks later Duo had returned, and given Heero a casual greeting. Just a 'Hello', as he passed him in the hallway. But there seemed to be something between them. Something Heero couldn't understand. Duo's eyes were cold. Cold like the snow where they had lay, and kissed, and touched.
The memories were vivid in Heero's mind. He'd opened his eyes, like Duo had asked. Now he wondered, if perhaps, he should have kept them closed.
Over the next few weeks, Heero had barely seen Duo. But he'd heard rumors. Rumors about Duo going out for drinks with different agents. Sometimes, these outings involved more than drinks. News spread fast in the Preventers. Heero had never paid attention to the rumors before.
Today, Heero had seen Duo in the parking lot of the Preventers Headquarters. Arms wrapped around agent Dawson's neck, leaning on the hood of Dawson's car, kissing in the snow when they'd thought no one could see.
Kissing in the snow.
But Heero had seen. Eyes wide open, taking everything in, making more memories. There was a dull pain in his chest, something he could not explain, like a lack of oxygen.
Heero dropped his keys on the table and hung his jacket in the closet. The apartment was warm. The thermostat read 68 degrees. It was warmer than he was used to, but tonight it felt comfortable.
He removed his shoes and set them neatly on the shoe rack by the door. His socks were wet, and he removed those, too. Meticulously folding them and setting them by his shoes. He'd put them in the dirty bin later.
The soft carpet felt good on his cold feet, and he walked to the window to watch the snowfall. It was beautiful, intense. It made him think of the milky skin on Duo's neck.
