Wufei flew me first class on the Preventer's shuttle. Nice little ride, even though I had trouble not going into the cockpit and taking over the controls. It seemed like we were moving so slowly. I was nervous and excited at the same time, filled with apprehension at what the future held. It was the best I had felt in months. Hilde was glad for me. She knew I wasn't really happy. She said she'd miss me and helped me pack. Funny, all that shit I had thrown every where hardly filled two duffels. Maybe that's why I spread it around to make it look like more than it was. Oh, and I brought the cat. She was mine after all. Bought a carrier and took her right on the shuttle with me. No one even blinked an eye.
When I got to the spaceport, he was there waiting for me with a car. He took my bag and gave me an odd look about the cat. I smiled and shrugged. "She was a stray, ya know, couldn't leave her behind." Wufei nodded some kind of understanding. I wouldn't try to guess what he really thought. I gave him a big hug that he stiffly returned. "Man it's so good to see you! So what now?"
"Good seeing you again too, Maxwell. I've got you set up in temporary housing until you find your own accommodations. Une informs me that she will meet with you in the morning and discuss details. I took the liberty in making arrangements for dinner for us this evening."
Good ol' Wufei. Still stiff as a board, but thoughtful. He looked good, all pressed and polished in his Preventers get up. He seemed centered, together, ya know. That inner turmoil that always bubbled up from way down inside seemed calmer. Maybe it was that I hadn't seen him in so long. Maybe he was happy.
At dinner we caught up on things a bit. Sally Po joined us, making for a really nice evening. It was a tightly run operation, but had some latitude, which I was relieved to know. I was the second of the Gundam pilots to 'officially' join and they were more than happy to have me. My ego was soaring. The following morning I met with Une and was assigned a code name and desk. Preventer Night. Fitting. Wufei was called Preventer Fire when in the company of others, but I still called him Wu-bear, Wu-pet, Wu-chan, anything to get under his skin. I missed him after all. They filled me in on how the others were, all except for Heero. Other than the fact he was still watching over Relena as her Head of Security, no one really had kept in touch with him. I had a feeling given Sally' looks and Wufei's spontaneous change of topic that it was Heero who had lost touch with everyone, and not the other way around. But I didn't pursue it. That was just Heero's way.
In the following weeks I was brought up to speed on all the sensitive issues and had gone through all the classes and updated training required for me to be active. It was cake. I had also discovered after breaking into the Preventers mainframe in less than forty minutes, that Quatre and Trowa both had their hands in the Preventers affairs as well. They may not be wearing the uniform but may as well have been on the payroll. That really only left Heero.
At my first opportunity, I informed Wufei that I was going to L1 to check up on some of our interests there. He didn't need to guess what those interests were, but had the decency not to pry. I didn't know why I had this desire to see Heero, but I felt I really couldn't move on with my new life until I saw that he was doing okay. At the end of the Mariemeia Incident, as it came to be known, he was recovering with Relena's help and we lost touch. I always felt like there was unfinished business between us, and we were friends. Friends stay in touch, right?
Wufei agreed to look after the cat while I was gone. I was surprised to find out he liked cats and had one himself before he and Meirian were married. Things were just clickin' for me. Before I left I bought a plant and a picture frame for the one and only picture I had and put them on my bedside table. The temp housing was spartan, but there was no need to make it feel as utilitarian as it was. I grabbed my bag and got a lift from Sally to the spaceport. She didn't ask either, and I was glad.
