Snow Falling On Cedars by Willow

Part 1

Duo looked out the window and sighed. It wasn't even All Hallow's Eve and already it was snowing. 'Man, I won't get to Trick or Treating this year if this snow doesn't stop soon...' he thought.

He looked over at his roommate, the perpetual typing machine. Sighing again, Duo removed himself from the windowseat and waddled over to where Heero sat. This was not an easy task for a boy with a cast encasing his leg from mid thigh down. As he neared his target, his toe caught on the rug, sending him falling toward the ground.

Heero caught the boy inches from the ground. "Baka... are you ok?"

Duo nodded, smiling at Heero. "Hai... I'm fine... thanks..."

"Hn." Heero said, turning back to his computer.

"Hey, Heero? Got any good books? Maybe a copy of Poe or something? I really wanna read 'The Cask of Amantillado' or maybe 'The Tell-Tale Heart'..." Duo said, rambling on at the mouth. "Or do you got any good Stephen King... perhaps 'The Tommyknockers' or 'The Stand'?"

"Duo, shut up... I'm sure there is something to read in the library..." Heero said, trying to pay attention to the computer and ignore the babbling boy.

"I'm sure there is... if I can get down there without breaking my neck..." Duo said, trying to hobble to the door.

Sighing, Heero stood and walked over to the boy. "Here." He said, offering his shoulder as a crutch.

"Thanks..." Duo said, placing his arm around Heero's shoulders and leaning against that taut frame.

They got to the library without further mishap and Heero made sure Duo was comfortable. 'How odd,' Duo thought, 'He's acting so kind...' He shrugged and turned back to the novel he'd picked out. 'This should be a good read.'

The cover read: 'Horror stories from Across America'

Sometime later, Quatre wandered into the library in search of his braided comrade... only to find said boy fast asleep in a large arm chair full of pillows. He smiled at the innocence of his friend. It was a shame to have to wake the boy, he was so silent right now.

But if he didn't there'd be serious repercussions later, for if Duo missed dinner 'there would be hell to pay' to quote the Shinigami pilot.

"Duo..." Quatre whispered, shaking the boy gently. "Duo, dinner."

Duo opened one sleep laden eye. "Huh?"

"Dinner..." Quatre said, smiling at the kittenish behaviour.

"Oh, goody!" Duo said, almost instantly awake.

Quatre helped the bouncing, casted boy across the small (thank god!) cabin to the kitchen.

"It's about time!" Wufei said, turning to look at the new arrivals.

"So~orry, Wu-man... what crawled up your ass and died?"

Wufei glowered at the boy, but made no reply.

"Duo, sit down and eat..." Heero said, piling... whatever it was... onto the boy's plate.

"What is that???" Duo asked, making a ghastly face.

"It's macaroni and cheese... well..." Heero said, looking at Trowa and Wufei. "Just eat it..."

"Fine... I'm so starvin' I don't much care what I eat as long as I eat..." Duo said, plowing into the orange, yellow, black and brown substance. "Eh, not that bad... once you get past the looks..." he said around a mouthful of the goo.

Quatre, deciding to join in the conversation, asked, "So how long are we hold up here?"

Heero shook his head, "Until the weather clears... about a week I guess..."

"What? Another week of Trowa and Wufei's cooking? Nu-huh! No way!" Duo shook his head rapidly, being sucessful only in making himself dizzy.

"Duo, we'll share all the work... well, you can do as much as you can with that bad leg of yours..." Quatre said, trying to calm the boy.

"Ok, as long as neither of them cook for a while..." Duo said, crossing his arms across his chest.

"Fine by me," Wufei said.

"......" Trowa nodded.

"Good, now let's enjoy our time off..." Quatre smiled and looked around the table.

"Tomorrow's Halloween!!!" Duo said, bouncing on his butt on the bed.

"Hn." Heero grunted, inwardly smiling at the boy's glee. Duo could act so innocent sometimes... then again... Heero thought as the boy grinned evilly and launched himself at the laptop.

"Argh!!!!" Duo groaned as he hit the floor.

Heero held the laptop high above his head, protecting it. When Duo didn't immediately get up off the floor he was worried.

"Duo? Daijoubu desu ka?" He asked, no emotion escaping his tight shields.

"H-hai..." came the weak reply. "I just kinda hit my leg... I'll be fine..."

"Hn." Heero placed the laptop back on the desk, then lifted his injured partner onto the bed. "Baka... be more careful..."

"Nah, guess you're right... Argh!!!" Duo clenched his teeth as his leg began to throb fiercely.

"Wait here..." Heero turned before Duo could retort. He was back in moments with a glass of water and some pain killers. "These'll make you sleepy..."

"Fine by me... like there's anything to do here but read..." Duo said, downing the glass of water and the brown pills in one gulp. "Nite-nite..."

Duo woke feeling none too chipper... 'Man, wha'd Heero give me?' he thought.

"Good morning..." a nasal voice said from across the room. As usual the Pefrect Soldier was rooted to the computer.

"Na, wha's fer breakfast..." Duo asked, rubbing sleep out of his eyes.

"Quatre, Trowa, and Wufei went into town to get supplies... When they get back we can eat..." Heero said, fingers flying across the keyboard in quick precise movements.

"M'k..." Duo said, deciding to nap until then.

The sound of doors opening, voices muttering, and glass shattering on the ground work the sleeping boy.

"Sounds like they're back from the store..." Duo muttered climbing out of bed and hobbling into the kitchen. He stopped at the door.

Behind two sticky, strawberry jam covered boys Duo knew to be Quatre and Trowa, Heero and Wufei stood clutching their sides trying to control their laughter.

"Mou, does this mean breakfast is gonna be later?" He groaned, looking forlorned.

Quatre looked up at him and didn't see the sticky hand covered in raspberry goo till it collided with his face. "TROWA!!!!!" The blond... well, 'strawberry'-ed blond launched himself at his lover.

Duo sighed and waddled around them, trying to avoid the icky mess that they'd made of the kitchen. He went over to the pantry and grapped the cereal and a bowl and spoon, then turned and left.

Heero watched the boy leave, then turned to the ones 'jam' wrestling. "Enough... clean up..." he said, turning to follow Duo's path of exit.

Once up in their room, Heero once again was back on the computer. Only this time he was doing research for a certain braided baka. Duo'd said he wanted some kinda Halloween thing, well Heero was gonna make sure he got it. He dredged up old files on haunted houses and ghosts. Stories and legends... anything he could find... Then he picked from the lot...

Duo was bored. Bad thing since he had a broken leg and they were stuck inside till further notice since the storm had kicked up again and the weather was growing worse with each moment.

There was a rapping on the study door.

"Rapping, tapping on my chamber door..." Duo cackled as he hobbled over to open it. "Tis a raven... Nothing more..."

"Hn." Heero said as he thrust a hanful of papers at the boy. "Read this... I have an idea to keep you busy this All Hallows Eve..." Heero smiled evily and Duo knew he'd like whatever Heero had planned. (AN: Not like that you perv!)

That evening, Heero gathered the pilots together for a little 'Halloween Fun'.

"Heero, none of us have even celebrated Halloween before..." Quatre said, unsure of what to do.

"This isn't really what you do on Halloween, but since we can't do what you really do... which is go door-to-door and get candy while dressed in really cool costumes... this is what we're gonna do..." Duo said, looking at the gathered group.

Heero nodded for Duo to proceed. "Once upon a time, a-way long ago, there was a man and his wife that lived all alone in a house out in the middle of a big lonesome prairie. There wasn't anybody or any house or any trees for miles and miles and miles around. The woman had an arm that was gold -- just pure solid gold from the shoulder all the way down..." Duo paused, looking at the faces around him. He continued in a spooky, story-telling voice.

"Well, by and by, one night, she died. It was in the middle of the winter, and the wind was a-blowing, and the snow was a-drifting, and the sleet was a-driving, and it was awful dark; but the man had to bury her; so he took her, and took a lantern, and went away off across the prairie and dug a grave; but when he was just going to put her in, he thought he would steal her golden arm, for he judged it wouldn't ever be found out, and he was a powerful mean man.

"So then he cut it off, and buried her, and started back home. And he stumbled along, and plowed along, and the snow and sleet swashed in his face so he had to turn his head to one side, and could hardly get along at all; and the wind it kept a-crying, and a-wailing, and a-mourning, way off across the prairie, back there where the grave was, just so: *B-z-z-z-z-z-z.* It seemed to him like a ghost crying and worrying about some trouble or another, and it made his hair stand up, and he was all trembling and shivering. The wind kept going: *B-z-z-z-z-z-z*, and all of a sudden he caught his breath and stood still, and leaned his ear to listen.

"*B-z-z-z-z-z-z* goes the wind, but right along in the midst of that sound he hears some words, so faint and so far away off he can hardly make them out. *'W-h-e-r-e-'s m-y g-o-l-d-e-n a-a-a-a-r-m? W-h-e-r-e-'s m-y g-o-l-d-e-n a-a-a-a-r-m?'*

"Down drops the lantern; and out it goes, and there he is, in that wide lonesome prairie, in the pitch-dark and the storm. He started along again, but he could hardly pull one foot after the other; adn all the way the wind was a-crying, and the snow a-blowing, and the voice a-wailing, *"W-h-e-r-e-'s m-y g-o-l-d-e-n a-a-a-a-r-m? W-h-e-r-e-'s m-y g-o-l-d-e-n a-a-a-a-r-m?"*

"At last he got home; and he locked the door, and bolted it, and chained it with a big log chain and put the chairs and things against it; and then he crept upstairs, and got into bed, and covered up his head and ears, and lay there a-shivering and a-listening.

"The wind it kept a-going *B-z-z-z-z*, and there was that voice again -- away, *ever* so far away, out in the prairie. But it was a-coming -- it was a-coming. Everytime it said the words it was closer than it was before. By and by it was as close as the pasture; next it was as close as the branch; next it was this side of the branch and right by the corncrib; next it was to the smokehouse; then it was right at the stile; then it passed the ash hopper and was right at the very door!

"*'W-h-e-r-e-'s m-y g-o-l-d-e-n a-a-a-a-r-m?'* The man shook, and shook, and shivered. He don't hear the chain rattle, he don't hear the bolt break, he don't hear the door move -- still the next minute he hear something coming *p-a-t, p-a-t, p-a-t,* just as soft, up the stairs. It's right at the door, now: *'W-h-e-r-e-'s m-y g-o-l-d-e-n a-a-a-a-r-m?'*

"Next it's right in the room: *'W-h-o-'s g-o-t m-y g-o-l-d-e-n a-a-a-arm?'*

Then it's right up against the bed -- then it's a-leaning down over the bed -- then it's right down against his ear and a-whispering soft, so soft and dreadful: *'W-h-e-r-e-'s m-y g-o-l-d-e-n a-a-a-a-r-m? W-h-o-'s g-o-t m-y g-o-l-d-e-n a-a-a-arm?'*

"'YOU GOT IT!!!!!!!'" Duo yelled, jumping at Quatre. Quatre nearly jumped out of his skin, grabbing ahold of Trowa to hide himself from whatever evil may approach.

Duo nearly fell out of his chair laughing, "Man, Q! That was soooo funny.... you looked like you'd really seen a ghost."

Trowa smirked a little. He'd see how Duo'd been during his... performance. He'd nearly scared himself silly with his overacting. Trowa decided a little payback was due the braided boy, quietly he said, "That's because there is one right behind you..."

"AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!" Duo screamed, falling out of the chair and into Heero's lap. His face was stark white and his eyes were huge.

Behind the chair stood a chuckling ghost. Wufei pulled off the mask and proceeded to return himself to human form.

"You should have seen your face, Maxwell... that was hilarious..." Wufei said, controlling himself.

"I got a Polaroid..." Heero said, with a smirk on his face.

"WHY YOU!!!!" Duo launched himself at the boy.

"Um, guys..."

Duo and Heero stopped their wrestling match to look at the Arab. Quatre just pointed to the window behind the chair.

Outlined by the falling snow, a shadowy figure stood looking into the small cabin. Duo gulped and pulled himself to hide behind Heero. Quatre followed suit by hiding (once again) behind his tall lover.
