If Only in My Dreams by Mookie

Duo knocked on the door, stamping his feet on the welcome mat to shake loose the snow from his boots. He glanced up as the door opened. "Hey, man," he said. "Thanks for calling."

"You know I just couldn't let a night like this pass and leave you at home alone."

Duo caught the moderated tone of voice, and got the hint immediately. He walked in quietly, shutting the door slowly behind him. Trowa motioned to the coat rack and Duo nodded, unbuttoning his woolen jacket and hanging it up. He untied his boots and pulled them off, setting them on the rubber mat next to the door.

Trowa beckoned him with two fingers, and Duo followed. The two of them crept into the living room where a fire crackled in the fireplace, shedding an orange glow onto the couch.

Duo glanced at the sofa, its sleeping occupant, and then at Trowa, who was grinning unashamed, then back at the sofa again.

A large velvet ribbon was stretched over it, coming up from the back and barely grazing Heero's blanket before disappearing behind one of the front legs. "How the hell did you manage that?"

"Egg nog."

"You've got to be kidding me."

Trowa shook his head. "It wasn't even spiked, just warm. We were just sitting here talking, and next thing I knew, he was out like a light. He looked a little cold, so I thought he could use some bundling up."

Duo was getting a crick in his neck just from looking at Heero, and at the tufts of unruly hair sticking straight up against the arm of the couch. Between the soft light from the fireplace, the soothing strains of music from Trowa's stereo, and the peaceful look on Heero's face, he felt a twist in his heart.

Trowa placed his hand on Duo's shoulder. "I know."

Duo crept quietly toward the couch and dropped to his knees. He reached out a hand to brush Heero's hair out of his face, then changed his mind.

"It's Christmas Eve, Duo," Trowa said quietly. "In some families, they get to open one gift before going to bed." His footsteps retreated, and Duo heard him go up the stairs before the hall light turned off.

He stood up and reached for the bow on the ribbon, then looked at Heero again. A smile crept over his face. He grabbed an afghan from the nearby armchair, ducked under the ribbon, and curled up next to Heero. In this position, with his head tucked under Heero's chin, his feet hit the opposite arm of the couch, so he lifted a leg up and wrapped it around both of Heero's.

Heero didn't stir.

"Sorry, Heero," Duo murmured into the afghan drawn up to his mouth. "Next year I promise I'll say no to overtime on Christmas Eve." His eyes flicked up to Heero's mouth, and he heard the steady deep breathing as it escaped slightly parted lips. Duo smiled.

"Merry Christmas, Heero."
