Hi hi! Here's a teeny bit more Rising. I'm in that weird point of a long fic where you can write only a little bit before you get an idea that you *really* want to write--except it can't come in for another two or three parts. Sigh. Well, thanks to everyone who's been sending nice comments/critiques of the bundle so far! I appreciate it all! Espec. Arashi, who always has something funny to say ^_^ (hi!)
Warnings: language, AU, lemon (indefinitely done with), death (sort of), yaoi
Feedback: Always appreciated
PS I don't know if I spelled Heero's little response to receiving a mission right... I was doing it from memory, and memory was phonetic. If I'm wrong, please tell me! Thanks a bunch and happy Easter and Passover for all who follow those religions. Thanks for reading!

Part Ten

//The old man watched him with gleaming metallic eyes. "You accept?" he asked--but it was a commandent.

Heero knew that Duo would never forgive him. He knew--knew--so much, and all of it, all that great wealth amounted to nothing. "Ninmu ryokai," he replied cooly.//

Duo shook Heero's shoulder. "Hey," he whispered, leaning over until his braid slipped from his shoulder and brushed Heero's bare skin. "Wake up, Hee-kun. We're here."

//"He is a danger to our mission. He will be the failure of it unless his threat is removed. You understand?"//

Duo saw an eye crack, and smiled. "Come on," he coaxed. "I'll get your bag, don't worry 'bout it, you just gotta get to the door and then it's straight to bed for you."

Heero touched Duo's face. "Mission accepted," he whispered, and somehow that was supposed to be a warning.

Duo smiled. "Right," he agreed. He slipped Heero's arm over his slender shoulders and hugged him close around the waist. "Come on, my dreamer."

Wufei stared up at the slowly circling ceiling fan, his dark eyes abstracted and one finger tapping a rhythm against the bedspread. Duo, struggling with his tee shirt, finally found the hole meant for his head and pulled it on; then he sat beside Wufei, and slid his arms around the Chinese boy's waist.

Wufei did not react. "I'm surprised you remember I'm here," he said coldly.

Duo pulled back. "What's wrong?"

"What's wrong?" Wufei laughed shortly. "What's wrong. Duo, what the *fuck* do you *think* is wrong!"

Duo's mouth opened, but no sound emerged. He slowly leaned back against the pillows, then rolled onto his side facing away from Wufei and lay silently. For a long time, they were quiet.

Then Wufei kicked his shoes off, and laid down beside Duo, putting his arms around him and tugging him back close against his chest. "Why?" he whispered.

"It just happened," Duo replied. He covered Wufei's hands with his, but the movement seemed stale, automatic. It made Wufei pause.

"Like *I* just happened?"

"I don't know," Duo said. "Why are you blaming me?"

"Because I know you want him."

"I want you, too."

"Well, you can't have us both. You understand that? It doesn't work like that."

Duo squirmed until he was facing Wufei; their noses brushed and Duo's eyes were nearly black in the moon-light from the window. "Tell me what it *does* work like," he breathed. "I think I want to hear this. Does it involve putting me in the middle of your little competition with Heero? Does it mention trying to make me into something I'm not, just to prove you can? Does it mention getting me high and fucking me when I can't fend you off?"

Those words, despite their soft volume and almost expressionless tone--or perhaps because of that--bit deeply. Wufei gazed back unblinking.

Duo moved his head a half-inch forward and pressed his forehead against the other boy's. "No fighting, not tonight," he murmured. "I don't care about all that, Wufei. I like you. I could love you. But you have to give somehow, somewhere. It can't all be me. Heero won't ever--I don't think he'll ever--it just *happened*, Wufei. It was just a kiss. Sometimes that's all a kiss ever is."

Wufei held him. "All right," he said. "In the morning, we'll talk. We need to. And, Duo, I believe you. I don't have any other choice, do I? Either I trust you or I don't."

Duo smiled, and curled tightly against him.

*But that doesn't mean,* Wufei thought, *that I have to trust your little paramour. You may think he won't ever pick up where he left off today, Duo... but I don't. So--I'm just going to have to make *sure* he doesn't.

And that you never find out... *
